Description

From School Library Journal Gr 7–10—Aware that adolescence can be an overwhelming time for girls, Kampakis has created a version of the 10 commandments for teens. She lays out her ultimate truths ("Kindness is more important than popularity"; "You were born to fly"), covering a different one in each chapter ("Confidence," "Reputation," "Patience," "Inner Beauty"). Written from a conservative Christian perspective, the text supplies biblical references to support each truth. Kampakis discusses why each of these topics is an important part of being a girl and how complete acceptance of God's plan is the best path to future happiness. The advice is reassuring and encouraging and the writing accessible, but the book only addresses Christian readers. The chapters on interacting with boys promote "The Rules"-like dating behavior ("If you want a boy to court you, don't make it too easy. Let him work a little…"), but it's a standard message in conservative circles. Kampakis's well-written, big sisterly advice will certainly resonate with some readers but will leave others out of the discourse entirely.—Elaine Baran Black, Georgia Public Library Service, Atlanta --This text refers to the paperback edition. Girls are reminded to see their relationship with God, themselves, and others as integral to their physical and spiritual development." - Reverend Robert J. Spot on advice for teen girls

This book is filled to the brim, pressed down, overflowing with wisdom to help our girls. It doesn't do the work of parental teaching, but serves as an encouraging voice that supports lessons parents should teach their daughters.

Growing up is difficult in any time, but girls today face more challenges than ever before. Internal conflicts have always been part and parcel of the teen years, but now external conflicts are more pervasive and insidious than at any point in our history. As a parent, it is overwhelming at times to guide a daughter to true peace and happiness. Kampakis offers a guidebook.

A lot of times after I read a book geared toward teens, I pass it along to my daughter and say, "This is a good book, you should check it out." With this one, I said, "You have to read this book. It will help you stay focused on what is most important. Read it!" The messages in it are not anything new or revolutionary. They are ideas that I have tried to ingrain into my daughter already. However, it is always a good thing to hear the same message from different sources. I had to laugh at one point because the idea of peaking at different times is one that a dear friend talked about with my daughter. The truth is, we don't want to peak in high school!

I don't have anything negative to say about this book. It is a home run all the way! If you want a book that will help guide your daughter to God's best, this is the book for you. Even if you don't read it, get it for your daughter (or granddaughter or niece or the girl down the street) to read. It can help encourage teen girls as they navigate treacherous waters.

is written in a way that girls will like to read

I have a teenaged girl, so books geared toward them are on the top of my reading list lately! Some of the books that are supposedly for young girls seem more directed at the mom or just a philosophical talk on topics -- but this one, 10 Ultimate Truths Girls Should Know, by Kari Kampakis, is written in a way that girls will like to read. As a matter of fact, my daughter started reading this before I had finished it (2 bookmarks!) and is enjoying it and wanted to know if she can have it for hers. Of course!

I think this book is a great book for teen girls. It speaks in an interesting way and teaches truths about God and Christian living, through the teen years. Some of the topics that are discussed are (from the table of contents), "Popularity, Confidence, Reputation, Interacting with Boys, Self-Worship, Perseverance, Patience, Image, Inner Beauty, and Self-Talk." The chapters include examples, Scripture, hints of how to live, and more. Each chapter ends with discussion questions that can be answered solo or used in a group setting.

One of the sections talks about interacting with boys and highlights ideas such as not bugging a boy (!!) by being pushy; purposes and suggestions for dating; and the question, "Who is the center of your universe?" Another segment talks about your reputation and the importance of what you do now. Friends, talents, oh--I loved the section on "You don't want to peak in high school"!

I like this book, and am glad that my daughter is reading it. It encourages pure living and unselfishness and kindness. It's up-to-date and timely and encourages girls in following Christ. I definitely recommend this book -- it'll make a great gift and would make a nice group study as well!

I received this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review. I was not required to write a positive review.

A timely addition to our family library

10 ultimate truths girls should know is for parents of preteen or elementary girls. If you need a refresh in what really matters in parenting this book is helpful. The calls to be intentional about the life lessons we are imprinting through our actions was clear. I have a six year old and a 12 year old so this is a timely addition to our family library.
