Description

The inspiring stories of the women who helped to shape our faith Throughout history, countless women have boldly stepped out in faith and courage, leaving their indelible mark on those around them and on the kingdom of God. In lively prose Michelle DeRusha tells their stories, bringing into focus fifty incredible heroines of the faith. From Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Ávila, and Anne Hutchinson to Susanna Wesley, Harriet Tubman, and Corrie ten Boom, these admirable women live again under DeRusha's expert pen. These engaging narratives are a potent reminder to us that we are not alone, the battles we face today are not new, and God is always with us in the midst of the struggle. "This book is rich in inspiration and information. Reading it opened my eyes, broadened my vision, and challenged my faith. I highly recommend it to both men and women!"-- Warren W. Wiersbe , author and former pastor of the Moody Church, Chicago"Fifty women who teach us that famous isn't about how many people know your name and that brave often looks like pressing on even when you're afraid. My daughter and I are both indebted to Michelle for introducing us to many women we'd never met before and are sure never to forget."-- Lisa-Jo Baker , community manager for (in)courage and author of Surprised by Motherhood "In the face of some of the same questions, temptations, and doubts we encounter today, these women were pioneers. Their stories give the church of today--men and women alike--a courageous and brave example of living faith and of living out faith, the evidence of things unseen."-- Deidra Riggs , managing editor of The High Calling and founder of Jumping Tandem "In this thoroughly researched and well-written work, Michelle DeRusha invites us into the lives of fifty women whose stories are our stories. This book inspired me, challenged me, and made me feel so proud to be a woman who belongs to Jesus."-- Jennifer Dukes Lee , author of Love Idol Michelle DeRusha writes a monthly column on religion and spirituality for the Lincoln Journal Star and is a regular contributor to The High Calling and other online journals. She also writes about faith in the everyday on her blog at www.michellederusha.com. She lives with her husband and their two boys in Nebraska. Terribly disappointed

I bought this book because the title leads you to believe you will “learn from heroines of the faith” and because Baker Books publishing is reputable.
However, I am terribly disappointed in this book and at what a missed opportunity for the author to expose us to women of the faith who traveled before us.

19 women in and I think the author has picked women with extraordinarily odd stories. They have not left me motivated or encouraged in faith. Even the short overview of each woman hasn’t made me want to pick more books about these women.

I feel the stories are highlighting more of the radical measures some of these women have taken at the expense of their families but without there being a real focus on their faith or their faithful God.

I’m going to finish the book. I’m hopeful some of these chapters will redeem this book for me but it’s not a book I would recommend.

In addition to my initial review and after reading more chapters, I think if the book were titled “women of conviction” or “women of action” perhaps it would be less deceiving. I think the idea behind many of the women selected is that you can believe whatever you want about God and have faith. Perhaps the mistake was mine in thinking that in fact these stories would be about women who were devout Christians and not just accomplishing things “in a man’s world”

There have been a couple women I am interested in learning more about. Though, sadly, it has little to do with faith but more about their contributions to history.

I liked how each biography started with a scene in their ...

This was a fascinating book full of inspirational women! It went in order of when they were born, starting all the way back in 1098 through 1925, and averaged about seven pages each. Some of the women I'd heard of, such as Florence Nightingale and Corrie ten Boom, and others were new to me. I liked how each biography started with a scene in their life so it almost felt like a fictional story. Then we were given some background, such as what their childhoods were like, their education, their family life and spiritual life. It's explained how each woman got involved in what she's known for and the impact on her family and society because of it. These women aren't shown as perfect Christians, but instead we see their mistakes and struggles, what they had to overcome from others and from themselves. At the end of each biography, DeRusha sums up their accomplishments and points out how we can relate to each woman and what we can take away to use in our own lives. She has done a lot of research for each biography, with the notes in the back of the book to prove it! While there were a lot of women to admire, there were a few that while I understood why they were included in the book because of some accomplishment, I didn't agree with their beliefs or the way they carried them out. Overall, this book is well worth the read and I highly recommend it!

I received this book free from Baker Books in exchange for an honest review.

So great!

This book is so great. Not only because it’s a well-researched, well-written book, that’s just overflowing with a wealth of information, but because these women–the fifty ladies introduced within–have rich stories to share. Their testimonies are some of the most amazing I’ve read. Plus, I just love the fact that no matter how much time has passed or how many years separate us, the women depicted in this read are so relatable. We should all get to know ‘em. Michelle DeRusha does a superb job!

Instant Classic

My prediction: Instant classic.

Starting from the first page of the first woman, readers learn Hildegard of Bingen was the tenth child in her family, and she was dedicated to the church as a tithe when she was only eight years old. WOW!

Michelle DeRusha gives readers a good look into each woman's life by highlighting unique facts and pointing us straight back to our great big God.

If I could give this book six stars I would.
