Description

The stories of Paddington Bear have delighted children all around the world for over 50 years. "A bear? In Paddington Station?"Mrs. Brown looked at her husband in amazement."Don't be silly, Henry. There can't be!" Paddington Bear had just traveled all the way from Peru when the Brown family first met him in Paddington Station. Since then, their lives have never been quite the same . . . for ordinary things become extraordinary when Paddington is involved. Michael Bond began chronicling Paddington’s adventures in his first book, A Bear Called Paddington, published in 1958. Fortunately, bears don’t need much encouragement, and Paddington has since filled the pages of twelve further novels, a variety of picture books, and many other projects written for the young at heart.

Educating an Emigrant Bear to English Customs

Bond’s curious and adorable bear from darkest Peru has captivated the hearts of British and American children since 1958. The Brown family lives near Portobello Road, site of a huge market; they consist of Mr. and Mrs. Brown, their children, Judy and Jonathan, and their officious housekeeper, Mrs. Bird. (A nasty neighbor, Mr. Curry, sticks his nose into other people’s affairs.) When Judy notices a poor, lonely stowaway bear sitting glumly on a battered suitcase in bustling Paddington Station, the Browns’ orderly life is instantly changed.

Named after the railroad station where he was found this bear loves marmalade sandwiches, his floppy hat, and his dear Aunt Lucy—now in a Home for Aged Bears. Interested in all things new (an elevator, the subway, the seaside, a department store, a famous vegetable market, and magic tricks) this agreeable bear speaks excellent English; he also has the “gift” of being able to stare down his opponents. His adventures in a relatively safe London provide many moments of enjoyable reading—although the chapters are rather long. The last “chapter,” entitled Postscript, explains how the book was inspired and gradually developed into a beloved series. Despite being somewhat sticky at times, Paddington will enchant readers 7-11.

Printed paper quality is cheap, but doesn't change the good quality of the story

Was buying to replace a damaged library book. Meets the need, but the price reflects paper quality being on the cheap side.
