Features & Highlights

  • "Lalli's prose is deft, her characters are delightful and her book is the just-right holiday romance."--
  • USA Today
  • One type-A data analyst discovers her free-spirited side on an impulsive journey from bustling Mumbai to the gorgeous beaches of Goa and finds love waiting for her on Christmas morning.
  • Twenty-nine-year-old Niki Randhawa has always made practical decisions. Despite her love for music and art, she became an analyst for the stability. She's always stuck close to home, in case her family needed her. And she's always dated guys that seem good on paper, rather than the ones who give her butterflies. When she's laid off, Niki realizes that practical hasn't exactly paid off for her. So for the first time ever, she throws caution to the wind and books a last-minute flight for her friend Diya’s wedding. Niki arrives in India just in time to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights, where she meets London musician Sameer Mukherji. Maybe it's the splendor of Mumbai or the magic of the holiday season, but Niki is immediately drawn to Sam. At the wedding, the champagne flows and their flirtatious banter makes it clear that the attraction is mutual. When Niki and Sam join Diya, her husband and their friends on a group honeymoon, their connection grows deeper. Free-spirited Sam helps Niki get in touch with her passionate and creative side, and with her Indian roots. When she gets a new job offer back home, Niki must decide what she wants out of the next chapter of her life—to cling to the straight and narrow like always, or to take a leap of faith and live the kind of bold life the old Niki never would have dreamed of.

Swoon Worthy Adventurous Holiday Romance ✨💗

This romance novel took me on the perfect holiday adventure to India, & I loved every minute of it!
I also loved how it wasn’t just a novel about romance, but also about family, friendships, culture, and self discovery. I really appreciate the detail and insight into the South Asian community. I definitely learned a lot about Diwali and the culture surrounding the festival.

Another thing that I loved was the insta love between Nikki & Sam. Right away I saw the chemistry between them, despite their differences. If you enjoy feel good romance/holiday romance, then you need to read this! I absolutely recommend it, & I plan on re-reading for Christmas time !

This book put me in a good mood.

After Niki gets laid off and practically told she is very single by her parents, she decides to go to her bff's wedding in Mumbai for a small break before searching for a new job. But what could happen if she finally says yes instead of no to a handsome bass guitarist on Diwali?

This book put me in a good mood.

Here's what I didn't like : eh. Some might say the insta-love might've been too much, I saw it as instant attraction but sometimes it was a little heavy handed. I did wish there was a little more tension, a little more drama.

Here's what I liked : I loved how Niki psyched Sam out. It was cute. I liked how she realized what it meant to love who you are when in a relationship.

Overall I felt the writing was nice with good flow and this was a cute book that made me smile a lot.

Enjoyed this one

I enjoyed this lighthearted romance. I appreciated that both main characters had issues to work through about their parents and expectations. The time the main characters spend together in India was great. I think the discussions about fitting in, family, treatment of women, were all very timely. Some could have been explored more, instead of simply mentioned or acknowledged. The inevitable conflict of how to make two lives come together to make a relationship work, felt very real. My only complaint is the actual growth in the relationship was mostly brushed over in the epilogue instead of being handled in the main story. I'll definitely check out more by this author.

a sweet #ownvoices read

Niki Randhawa lives a predictable, but stable life as a data analyst in the US. When she's unexpectedly laid off, she takes it as a sign that she should attend her friend Diya's wedding in Mumbai. Niki arrives just in time to celebrate Diwali where she meets Sameer Mukherji (aka Sam), a musician from London where they both form a connection. Niki has to decide whether she should go back to her predictable life or take a leap of faith and live a bold life she couldn't have imagined.

Niki sounds like a pretty typical South Asian first generation American, where you have the opportunities of America but the expectations of your immigrant parents. I could totally relate! It was nice to read about her stepping away from that and going on a trip on a whim. I did something similar in my mid-20s and lived in the UK for a year for work. It was honestly life-changing. While I didn't meet a Sam, I can understand how it shifts your perspective. I loved the representation of Diwali as well - I read Christmas books all the time so it was nice to see one set at Diwali time for a change. The romance was sweet but complicated, which made for a good read.

I recommend this to anyone who a) loves romance, because who doesn't?! and/or b) wants to learn more about the Indian culture and the celebration of Diwali.

Thank you to Berkley Publishing and NetGalley for the review copy.

Strong Beginning, Fell Flat

This gorgeous cover and premise had me. I thought it sounded adorable and I love a good character arc. Unfortunately, the strong beginning fizzled out and the insta-love didn't do it for me. I would have loved to experience more of Diwali and how it changed the course of Niki's life. The educational moments at the beginning of the book didn't continue unfortunately.
I wish that the wrap up in the epilogue had been sprinkled far more heavily in the bulk of the book. I was hoping for a more dynamic heroine rather than what came off as a lusty drive to have Sam for one night. Where did her drive to find herself go? It's a missed opportunity, in my opinion.
Thank you to Berkley and NetGalley for the e-arc. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Full of Sparks!

enjoyed reading Sonya Lalli’s Serena Singh Flips The Script and was super excited to get approved for A Holly Jolly Diwali!

The title of the book itself has so much spark in it! Diwali is the biggest, brightest and beloved festival celebrated by most Indians regardless of where they are residing. To add to it there were literally fireworks between Sam and Niki! Oh my! their chemistry and flirting had such intense pull and immense spark!

I loved this book very much and could not help but visualize each and every scene in my head as if this was a movie! Thank you Sonya Lalli for giving us this firecracker right when Diwali is around the corner!

Thank you @berkleypub and @netgalley for the gifted galley of this fun, sparkly romcom that could be picked up at your nearest bookshelves as of Oct 5, 2021!

A great romance

Thank you @berkleyromance for a copy of Holly Jolly Diwali. I always appreciate a romance that has more depth in the story and this one packs it all. This story is about expectations, familial duty and self discovery. I liked that both Niki and Sam were both at crossroads when they met. I love the slow burn and the connection they had. I enjoyed seeing the growth individually of Niki and Sam.

A cute romcom

If you are looking for a slight change to your holiday reason, check out A Holly Jolly Diwali! It was nice to mix up my Christmas books with our culture celebrations like Hanukkah and Diwali.

Niki is an analyst who always does what’s expected. When she is let go from her job, she decides to use the time off to go to India for her best friends wedding, arriving just in time for Diwali. She meets Sam, the lead singer of the band and hits it off when them. They have a slow build friendship to maybe more and they go to the wedding together. They also join her friend Diya and her new husband for a group honeymoon (this is a thing?! It sounds fun!) Sam is definitely more creative and encourages Niki to do what she wants, not what is expected.

I loved all of the cultural aspects of this book, especially the wedding customs and the references to the delicious food. But I didn’t really feel too much chemistry between Niki and Sam. I did empathize with Niki about her parents expecting her to do what they wanted; particularly after her sister chose to do what she wanted. My favorite part was the sister’s fight over their mother’s yellow sari!🥻
