Description

“Maisie is one of the great fictional heroines, equal parts haunted and haunting.” — Parade “The combination of period detail and intricate storytelling makes A Lesson in Secrets seem distant enough to be romantic but sufficiently modern to engage our sympathies.” — Tom Nolan, Wall Street Journal “With an affecting storyline and graceful prose, Winspear has again created a powerful and complex novel, one that will linger in memory as a testament to her talent and her humanity.” — Richmond Times-Dispatch In the summer of 1932, the career of psychologist and investigator Maisie Dobbs takes an exciting new turn when she accepts an undercover assignment from the British Secret Service. Sent to pose as a junior lecturer at a private college in Cambridge, she will monitor any activities “not in the interests of His Majesty’s government.” When the college’s controversial pacifist founder, Greville Liddicote, is murdered, however, Maisie is directed to stand back as her colleagues in Scotland Yard spearhead the investigation. But she soon discovers that the circumstances of Liddicote’s death appear inextricably linked to the suspicious comings and goings of faculty members and students under her surveillance. To unravel this web, the investigator must overcome a reluctant Secret Service, discover shameful hidden truths about Britain’s conduct during the Great War, and face off against the rising power of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei —the Nazi Party—as the storm clouds of World War II gather on the horizon. Jacqueline Winspear is the author of the New York Times bestsellers The Consequences of Fear, The American Agent , and To Die but Once , as well as thirteen other bestselling Maisie Dobbs novels and The Care and Management of Lies , a Dayton Literary Peace Prize finalist. Jacqueline has also published two nonfiction books, What Would Maisie Do? and a memoir, This Time Next Year We’ll Be Laughing .xa0Originally from the United Kingdom, she divides her time between California and the Pacific Northwest. A Lesson in Secrets is the eighth volume in the Jacqueline Winespear detective series featuring Maisie Dobbs

This book is a good story of murder and revenge. The heroine is Maisie Dobbs and the tale is set in the early 1930s. Maisie is a PI who is recruited by Scotland Yard to attend a new college devoted to peace in the Cambridge University system. The founder of the college is Dr. Greville Liddicote famous for his belief in pacificism following the horror of World War I. Maisie acts as a philosophy teacher at the school sending reports to Scotland Yard on activities which could prove harmful to His Majesty's Government. She is shocked with Liddicote is found strangled to death in his comfortable office. The author of "The Peaceful Little Warriors" is dead. This children's book became famous because of its readership of troops in the bloody trenches of France which turned young men into pacifists. The book was read by both sides. One of the teachers at the school learned his son had been executed as a deserter after his perusal of the book. Dr. Matthias Roth, formerly a German officer in the Great War, is Liddicote's assistant who turned to pacifism following the Armistice in 1918. A secondary plot deals with the murder of Maisie's friend Sandra's husband Eric while working at a car dealership. The novel is good at drawing the mood of Great Britain in the 1930s as the threat of Fascism reared its ugly head in Germany. Two of the British characters in story are Nazis. We also are made privy to the love affair between Maisie and the wealthy James
Compton who runs a large company and was a flying ace in World War I. A quiet book where the violence occurs offstage. Enjoy!

Maisie Dobbs.... A Great Mystery Series....This Book....Not So Much

I have read all of the Maisie Dobbs mystery books by Jacqueline Winspear, in order of release, but this was the first one I bought off of Amazon..... hence my first review in this series. I love the historical settings... the blending in of facts with the fictional storyline, but this book just didn't quite meet the standard of excellence I received from the other six books. It was an interesting read, but taking Maisie out of her own investigating business and having her play spy for the Government just didn't feel right. Sure she had a murder to solve, but to me the main focus was on why rather than who. I would say to go ahead and read this book as I am sure it will be referred to in the next.

Maisie Dobbs

Not her best. Lots of narrative and not enough action, in my opinion.

another good read

Maisie Dobbs is a very busy person, what with running a detective agency and dealing with personal matters. On top of that, the British Government gives her an undercover assignment, to act as a junior lecturer in a private college while nosing about for foreign intrigue that would threaten the nation.

When the head of the college is murdered, Maisie is told to leave the investigation to the police. As a natural detective, she finds it hard to comply. Besides she soon finds that the murder appears to be linked with foreign threats.

We get a good feel of what a daily life is like in those between the war years. The contrast of wealth and poverty, the weather, and the attitude of war veterans as opposed to the impressionable younger generation who finds excitement in the new Nazi movement.

We can enjoy the relaxed style of Winspear's writing, while sensing its deep insights. Those were scary times, which reminds me of these likewise scary times.

I was surprised to discover Lee Child and Winspear are fans of each others writing. They compare Jack Reacher with Maisie Dobbs, during an interview in the back of the book.

Another enjoyable read that earns Maisie Dobbs many fans.

Winspear's books are a marvelous account of life in Europe from WW I - II!

Her books are a wonderful overview of life in England and the Continent from the Great War, well into WW II. I am working my way through the series, and consider Maisie Dobbs to be an old friend now! I recommend trying to read the books chronologically, but any of the books is a treasure! I recommend the Maisie Dobbs series highly.
