As soon as the election results favoring the Left became known, King Alfonso XIII left for exile in France, and Don Santiago, monarchist, staunch conservative and Catholic that he was, saw his world collapsing around him. He could never tolerate the Reds, still less adapt to their vulgar ways: those ruthless people were lackeys of the Soviets who went around burning churches and executing priests. The idea that everyone was equal was fine as a theoretical slogan, he said, but in practice it was an aberration. We are not equal in the eyes of God, because He was the one who created social classes and other distinctions among mankind. The agrarian reform stripped Don Santiago of his land, which was not worth a great deal but had belonged to his family forever.From one day to the next, the peasants spoke to him without doffing their caps or lowering their eyes. His inferiors’ insolence was more painful than the loss of his land, because it was a direct affront to his dignity and the position he had always held in this world. He dismissed all the servants who had lived under his roof for decades, had his library, paintings, other collections and memorabilia packed up, and closed his house under lock and key. All this filled three moving vans, but he couldn’t take the biggest pieces of furniture or the grand piano, because they wouldn’t fit into his Madrid apartment. A few months later, the Republican mayor of Santa Fe confiscated the house and turned it into an orphanage.Among the many grave disappointments and reasons for anger Don Santiago suffered in those years was the transformation of his protégé. Under the bad influence of the troublemakers at the university, and in particular that of a certain Professor Marcel Lluis Dalmau, a communist, socialist, or anarchist—in the end, it was all the same thing—his Roser had turned into a Red. She had left the guest house for young ladies of good repute and was living with some hoydens who dressed as soldiers and practiced free love, which is what promiscuity and indecency had come to be called. He had to admit that Roser never showed him any lack of respect, but since she took it upon herself to ignore his warnings, he naturally had to withdraw his support for her. She wrote him a letter thanking him with all her soul for everything he had done for her, promising she would always follow the right path according to her own principles, and explaining she was working at night in a bakery and continuing to study music by day.Don Santiago Guzman, installed in his luxurious Madrid apartment, where he could barely make his way through the clutter of furniture and other objects, and protected from the noise and vulgar uproar in the streets by heavy drapes the color of bull’s blood, socially isolated by his deafness and boundless pride, was blissfully unaware of how the most terrible rancor was surfacing in his country, a rancor that had been feeding on the wretchedness of some and the arrogance of others. A great story of love and survival

Over the years, I've read most of Isabel Allende's books. Some I've liked, others not so much. This one I really enjoyed.

As she says in her acknowledgements at the end of the book, Allende mined her own family stories to create the framework for this novel. It starts during the brutal Spanish Civil War in the 1930s and ends in the 1990s in Chile. While there are a number of major, well-drawn characters, the focus of the book is a couple who made a "marriage of convenience" in order to flee to Chile at the end of the Spanish Civil War. They favored the losing side, and it wasn't safe to stay.

After a dangerous flight over the French border and near starvation in refugee camps, Victor Dalmau, a medic, and Roser Bruguera, is a young pianist who was taken in by Victor's parents, are able to reach Chile. Roser is pregnant by Guillem, Victor's brother and a fighter in the Civil War. But when it comes time for Victor and Roser to escape, Guillem has not been heard from for some time and is feared dead. In order to emigrate, the couple have to marry. So they agree on a marriage of convenience, and take a boat with thousands of other refugees to Chile.

All of that takes up about the first half of the book; the rest is about their experiences over the decades in South America. There are quite a few twists of fate, due to their own restless hearts and also because of the precarious political situation that develops in the country. But through it all, the pair do their best to survive, for their own sakes and that of Guillem's son, Marcel.

Isabel Allenda is a marvelous storyteller. Her prose is spare but descriptive, and she keeps the plot moving through more than 50 years of history. This is one of my favorites of her books.

The Master Outdoes Herself

I believe Isabel Allende to be one of the greatest writers of our time. Her words are like the smoke of incense that wraps itself around you and leaves a lingering perfume. This book comes at a time when the "othering" of refugees has reached a critical point. It is about love, loss, the power of hope and yearning for home. It's a sweeping epic that spans six decades. It is both timeless and timely. It is quite possibly her best work to date.

LOTS OF TELLING; NOT MUCH SHOWING

Allende's earlier books were intriguing, hard to put down. In this one (and others lately) she seems to have fallen into a lazy writing style of boring backstory and merely telling about the characters and their turmoil instead of showing us through action and dialogue. A shame, really, because the tragedy of the Spanish Civil War and the suffering and bloodshed it brought to millions (and the characters in this book) is a story in need of illumination. This one is isn't it. The same could be said for the her superficial treatment of the drama that played out in Chile in the time of Salvador Allende, Augusto Pinochet, and Pablo Neruda. This should have been two books. Additionally, there were too many characters to keep track. Sorry Isabel, you can do better.

A Long Petal of the Sea is Isabel Allende's semi fictionalized account (the historical figures are real, other characters are invented) of a pair of Republican refugees from Spain's Civil War who immigrate to Chile on a voyage arranged by poet Pablo Neruda. Yes, that voyage actually happened, and Neruda was the man behind it. Neruda was charged with choosing individuals with useful technical skills. He chose some people like these, but he also apparently chose people he found intelligent or interesting or whose spirit and values he admired.

Two of these refugees are Victor and Roser. Victor is a not-yet-licensed doctor who served as a medic in the Spanish Civil War and who dreams of becoming a cardiologist. Roser, a former piano student of Victor's father, is pregnant with the child of Victor's younger brother, who was killed in the war. The pair marry and agree they will raise the child together as friends. The novels follows their life in Chile—and other parts of Latin America—through the second half of the 20th Century, including the election and overthrow of President Salvador Allende, the Pinochet dictatorship that followed, and Chile's gradual return to democracy.

This is a historical period of great interest to me, and I appreciated the longitudinal picture of events A Long Petal of the Sea Provided. Nonetheless, I had a hard time immersing myself in the narrative, which is relatively bare. The novel read like a summary of what might have been had Allende moved beyond a relating a series of events and allowed readers to dwell in the inner lives of the characters.

I'm glad to have read this book, but I was very conscious that I was reading, rather than living through these times alongside the characters.

compassion for refugees embedded in a great story

I really like good historical fiction. It gives one the personal experience of participating in historical events through the perspective of fictional characters. And this is good historical fiction as it addresses the subjects of refugees and exile brought about by political instability and turmoil. Allende is not someone without personal experience in this regard as her uncle was Salvador Allende and she had to flee Chile in 1973 when Pinochet staged a rightwing coup. Her first book “House of the Spirits” dealt with this same subject using a fictional country and fictional political leaders. This book is about real countries, real events, real political figures.
The book starts in the year 1939 in the city of Barcelona. Franco’s forces have just defeated the Republican forces in the battle of Madrid and are closing in on the last Catalonian stronghold of Barcelona. There the middleclass family of a music teacher, Marcel Dalmau, is contemplating the impending disaster. Marcel’s two sons are socialists, members of the Republican forces. Victor is a medic and his brother, Guillem, a soldier, just killed in the forces defeated in Madrid. Also, part of the household is a girl, Roser, a musical prodigy, adopted by Marcel and pregnant with Guillem’s child. The story follows the flight, in the depths of winter, of Victor and Roser, along with the catastrophic exodus of hundreds of thousands from Barcelona to the French border. There, in the French concentration camps on the beaches at Argeles-sur-Mer, they endure brutal mistreatment and witness the deaths of thousands of refugees.
The Nobel Prize winning Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda plays a crucial role in the story as he organizes an exodus of over 2000 of the refuges on a chartered freighter to be resettled in Chile. The story follows the lives of Victor and Roser as they are rescued by Neruda and end up in Santiago, Chile. They are adopted by the scion of a wealthy family who is a sympathizer with left-wing causes. The tensions, inequalities and instability of Chilean society of that time are revealed through the characters’ lives and portend another repeat of the horror they escaped in 1939. Allendes’ complex interweaving of compelling characters and situations propel this story forward and will keep you turning pages. Victor does not relinquish his political affiliations, and this will prove disastrous 34 years after he arrived in Chile when the right-wing dictatorship of Pinochet takes over. Along with Rosa he again becomes a refugee and again they both are forced into exile in Venezuela.
Allendes’ portrayal rings true because she has lived this story herself. Political instability fueled by inequality and strident ideology are dangers to all Democratic societies and can give rise to catastrophic conflict. Allendes’ book is a plea for understanding and compassion for the plight of refugees from political, societal and racial violence. The world is again confronting refugee crisis’s in the middle east and on our own southern border. How we treat or mistreat these refugees reflects on our human values not theirs. Apparently throughout history it has been all too easy for people to succumb to the politics of unscrupulous leaders who appeal to the worst aspects of human nature.
If you’re looking for an epic and masterful work of historical fiction, of hope, exile and belonging then look no further. Within this epic sweep of history is embedded a great story with many unexpected plot twists. This will be made into a movie. Pablo Neruda’s poetry is featured at the beginning of each chapter. JACK

A sappy love story

A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende is a book few men would enjoy. With its sappy love story, A Long Petal is clearly written for a female audience.

The history and politics of Spain and Chile from 1938 to 1994 serve as background to the main story-line. The historical events, including a WWII era boat lift of refugees, led by a Chilean poet are fairly accurately portrayed. As the author is the niece of Salvador Allende there is though a touch, but just a touch, of pro-Allende bias in the political/historical background narrative.

The sappy love story does have some interesting cultural elements like folk medicine and for those interested in such things, details about the preparation of local delicacies. Also, the role of the Catholic Church intervention in political affairs, as well as unsavory intervention into family issues, is depicted. However, it is the love lives of the main characters that drives the storyline. A narrative that reads like the plotline of a telenovela. If you like telenovelas this is a book for you, but for most readers, men and women, the sappy plotline is incredibly unrealistic.

Real-life stories of love in desperate times are far more compelling than the fairy-tale story plot of the A Long Petal. The Last Boat Out of Shanghai by Helen Zia and The Country Under My Skin by Gioconda Belli are two such examples. As these two authors tell, true, but amazing tales of love in war and its aftermath, The Last Boat and The Country Under My Skin are far superior to the soap opera that is The Last Petal.

Affecting historical novel

Allende fans, the first thing you should know is that this isn’t a magical realism novel of the kind she’s known for. It’s a historical novel, though focused on the effect of historical events on the people caught up in their tide.

The story plays out over decades, starting in 1938 Spain, during the horrific Spanish Civil War sparked when the Nationalists (right-wing factions led by General Francisco Franco’s army group) revolted against the Second Spanish Republic. Allende’s descriptions of what it’s like to fight a war, sometimes street to street, with your own countrymen, stand out.

Victor, a field medic for the Loyalists/Republicans survives, but his brother, Guillem, does not. Guillem leaves behind his pregnant girlfriend, Roser. When the Nationalists win the war, Victor and Roser are among those who escape to France. They marry to qualify to travel on a refugee ship to Chile, sponsored by the famous poet Pablo Neruda.

To contrast with Victor and Roser, Allende gives us the Chilean del Solar family. Patriarch Isidro is a powerful industrialist, a conservative, while his wife is a religious fanatic. They epitomize the forces who support Franco back in Spain. But their children, Felipe and Ofelia, are more adventurous and become friends with Victor; tempestuously more than friends in Ofelia’s case.

Over the years, Victor finishes his medical studies and becomes a prominent surgeon, while Roser successfully pursues a musical career. Their platonic relationship deepens into love.

Then after decades of democratically elected governments—an anomaly in South America—the socialist Salvador Allende is elected. (Salvador Allende was Isabel Allende’s father’s first cousin.) This horrifies people like Isidro del Solar, and his side finds support from the Nixon administration in sponsoring a coup in 1973 and installing a violently repressive military junta led by dictator Augusto Pinochet. Once again, Victor and Roser find themselves on the wrong side of historical forces and nearly two decades go by before Chile is released from Pinochet’s iron grip.

Allende carries the story through Victor and Roser’s old age, and even throws in a plot twist at the end. The focus throughout, though, is the persistence of the human spirit and the possibility of love in the face of great challenges.

At times there is more telling than showing, but this is still an affecting and immersive novel.
