Description

Fabry ( War Room ) delivers a powerful story of faith and the material things people hold dear. After millionaire Gideon Quidley’s wife dies in 1974, Gideon feels led by God to hide all of his gold and silver―as well as thousands in cash―in a custom-built ark, bury it in the hills outside of Emmaus, W.Va., and leave only a list of cryptic Bible verses as clues to finding the treasure. . . . Local radio broadcaster TD Lovett gets involved in the treasure hunt after his friend and local pastor Robby Gardner goes missing during his search. . . . The winding narrative, which follows TD’s transformation from unwelcoming skeptic to enthusiastic believer, elevates themes of community and faith in God’s plan. This is Fabry’s best yet. Publishers Weekly Every title by Fabry ( Borders of the Heart ) draws readers into the story with clear, honest writing in a similar style to Charles Martin and Lynn Austin. The rural South comes to life, with themes of forgiveness and second chances as highlights. The characters are both deeply flawed and immensely relatable, making this another hit for Fabry. Library Journal A Piece of the Moon represents what I love most about fiction: the ability a novel has to transport you to another place in time. Fabry’s voice as a writer is engaging and dripping with charm and nostalgia. It took me back to the years of small radio stations and the earthy music of the old days. The fact that it comes with its own playlist is a brilliant way to reintroduce some of the great music of the past to new audience. A fantastic story written by an absolute treasure of a human being. I highly recommend A Piece of the Moon (and by the way, isn’t that a great title!). Cindy Morgan, author and Grammy nominee Chris Fabry has done it again! If you’re looking to have fun and you like country, this is the story for you. The characters jump off the pages and into your heart and you’ll be smiling at what they said and what they did for weeks to come. Each chapter is full of people you would just swear you know from your own hometown! Don Reid, The Statler Brothers A Piece of the Moon has it all. Quirky, endearing characters. A rich story arc full of surprises. Lines so funny you'll want to read them aloud to anybody within earshot. And a ten-der thread of redemption that runs from first page to last. Spending time with Waite and TD and Clay and Pidge and all the other folks in Emmaus was pure joy. The best novel I've read in ages. Liz Curtis Higgs, NYT bestselling author of Mine Is the Night Wonderful! Full of believable characters, forgiveness, redemption, suspense, a great sense of “place”―not to mention a great playlist and quotable wisdom. All I could hope for in a great escape! Engaging/Relatable/Heartwarming

I enjoyed this book more and more as I read. I felt like I was there, small town West Virginia, in the 80s with this quirky cast of characters. The ending was so so good, I cried three times. There’s not another book quite like this one. It is filled with heart and honesty, rich in every way.

Chris Fabry's "A Piece of the Moon" is a piece of West Virginia!

When you read Chris Fabry's "A Piece of the Moon"—which in my opinion you should—you get a piece of West Virginia. I should know; I live here. As such, I thoroughly enjoyed all the references to the Mountain State. Clearly Fabry knows this setting. And its people.

Not only do you get a piece of West Virginia, in Fabry’s" A Piece of the Moon," you also get a great story, beautifully told. This tale is jam-packed with delightful components: mystery, love, faith, humor, and overcoming obstacles, to name only a few.

You also get a behind-the-scenes peek at what all happens inside a radio station. Well, what used to happen. I reckon the industry has changed a lot since the early 80s. Still, I found the details to be fascinating. And precise. Again, Fabry knows his stuff.

Speaking of the radio facet of the book, even the songs played a key part in this tale. They firmly established the chronology of the story, and for some readers, the tune titles will bring back a flood of memories.

I have to say, I grew quite fond of the folks of Emmaus, West Virginia, with all their strengths, weaknesses, strong faiths and disillusioned ones. I very much appreciated Fabry’s nuanced approach to the topic of faith. The belief system of main character Waite was strong and beautiful. Others, less so. The story realistically showed established believers falling prey to the siren song of buried treasure. In addition, more than one family was divided along the lines of got faith? And no, thank you. And that, my friend, is one true story to tell.

There’s a whole lot going on in "A Piece of the Moon," and because Fabry is such a gifted storyteller, that means there’s a whole lot to love.

Similar to Billy Coffey's books

Another book at least partly set in the 1980s. I seem to be on a roll with these lately. ;)
This story reminds me of stories I've read by Billy Coffey. So if you like his books, you'll probably like this one as well!
Well developed characters. A different sort of story than I've read lately, which is good. :) Lots of twists to the plot.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance e-copy. The opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Excellent Book

A Piece of the Moon by Chris Fabry is an excellent historical fiction that has it all: a strong and uplifting narrative, mystery, suspense, unique characters, and a positive message. This book really grabbed my interest from the very beginning and only drew me in deeper the further I read into the novel. I really, really enjoyed it.

I loved the premise of the concept of the novel. It was so unique and refreshing to read. I loved the local of rural WV. As a WV native, I always enjoy a good story involving the hills of Appalachia. This story also presented a wonderful cast of quirky and creative characters. I really loved seeing the treasure hunt and how it transformed the participants as it went onward.

Without giving too much away to fellow readers, I really enjoyed the turns and surprises that were revealed throughout. I relished in the aspect of finding that second layer of complexity within the story, the deeper meaning, and that it was not just about "finding and searching" for material treasures, but about much, much more. The revelations really brought it all home. I truly do love a story with a wonderful message.
