Chapter 1 xa0 The passage beneath my bedchamber was silent as a crypt, though as always, the Empress scorpions that nested in these forgotten tunnels started hissing disapproval the moment my feet touched the ground. xa0 I crouched and checked the circle of cinnamon sticks and dried lavender I’d laid to deter the wicked beasts, and then knotted the hem of my skirt. If left hanging, the chime and rattle of its beading would echo through the passages, and although I’d never crossed paths with anyone here, I couldn’t risk discovery. xa0 I adjusted the belt knife in its soft leather holster at the small of my back. Whenever I shifted, nicks in the wooden handle scratched my skin, but it couldn’t be helped. This knife was my only weapon plain enough to suit this disguise. In a floor-sweeping skirt and a top that bared my midriff but covered my arms and their tattoos, I could pass as a common human girl out for a night of revelry. xa0 Flint struck stone inches from my face, sparks dancing through inky darkness. I jumped, a curse on my lips, but my hand fell from my knife. “I’d appreciate some warning next time.” xa0 “Just keeping you sharp,” said the young man standing mere feet away. xa0 Falun, second-in-command of my guard and my closest friend, towered over me in the cramped passage. He was long-limbed and graceful, though still not quite grown into his wide shoulders. Like many of the fey, who originally came from the North, Falun was fair-skinned and fine-haired. Even in the scant torchlight, his skin gleamed like mother-of-pearl. All the fey had a certain sameness—luminous skin, oversize eyes, pointed ears, and vibrant coloring—but Falun was among the most beautiful. His hair was streaked with apple red and dark gold, and the sharp line of his jaw emphasized his full-lipped smile. xa0 Two nights ago, Falun had gone to my room at dawn to propose a journey to the kitchens and found me missing, my bed pushed aside, trapdoor hanging open. He knew I became restless at night, and instead of sounding the alarm, he’d waited until I returned. In exchange for such a kindness, I’d decided to bring him tonight, though I’d been very light on the details. xa0 Falun held the torch to the passage wall, the dancing flames making his blue eyes flash silver as he inspected the words engraved on the stone. They were written in the khimaer language, the sinuous alphabet of the people who’d once ruled from this Palace. Nearly two hundred years ago, humans had wrested control of the Queendom from the khimaer, but signs of the previous rulers still lingered all over Myre. xa0 Falun’s eyebrows rose as he recognized the language. “How did you find this place?” xa0 “When I was seven, Isadore and I found the trapdoor after her earring rolled under my bed.” I didn’t add that we’d found a similar hatch beneath hers and spent a year sleeping very little as we explored every inch of these passages at night. xa0 I went to great lengths to avoid discussing my sister. xa0 The tips of Falun’s tapered ears went pink. “Isadore knows about this place? Don’t you worry about seeing her?” I snorted. “Why would my sister come here? There is nothing about the Palace that would make her want to leave.” xa0 “True enough.” He swiped a hand across his face, but his grimace remained in place. “I’ll regret this, won’t I?” xa0 “You won’t, and you know it—why else would you have come?” xa0 He leaned forward as if sharing a secret. “Actually I came to keep you out of trouble.” xa0 “And that works just as well.” I grinned, even though I could protect myself. I snatched his torch and snuffed out the flames beneath my boot. “Follow me.” xa0 We ran through darkness so thick the only sign of Falun beside me was his hand in mine. After months of sneaking out through these passages, finding my escape route—and avoiding the scorpion nests—had become second nature. When Isadore and I were children, we’d stuck to the passages around our quarters, but when I returned to the capital ten months ago and began exploring again, I soon realized they tunneled through the grounds around the Queen’s Palace, right up to its outer wall. The floors of the passages changed now from stone to tile to packed earth, a sure sign that we were close. After about a mile, we stopped at a steel ladder. Night air blew through an opening overhead. xa0 I climbed to the top and emerged in an orchard with rows of flowering trees, though they didn’t bloom during the scorching weeks of high summer, as it was now. Fresh air kissed my skin, heavy with damp heat. I breathed it in, my pulse a driving beat beneath my skin. Almost , it hummed. xa0 Falun joined me, following my gaze to a carved expanse of white stone. xa0 The wall that marked my freedom. Read more

MORE PLEASE! BEST BOOK IVE READ IN A LONG WHILE, TOO GOOD FOR ONE SENTENCE!!!!

Amazing debut novel!!! I pretty much picked it up 16 hours ago and found I could not drop it! As an avid reader and endless consumer of fantasy books, I picked up this story because a previous book I just finished was something I had to force myself to finish reading. The characters were toneless, the climax was lackluster, and the world was grey. But a River of Royal Blood!!!!
Stunning!
Beautiful!
Captivating!!!
Breathtaking!!!
Heart wrenching!!!!
I could go on!!! I love stories with rich descriptions and actual lore, I LOVE WORLD LORE!!! I love a world that mirrors ours but has enough differences to literally let me slip into. I felt each characters voice as if they were there own, I understood and connected the most with Eva's grief and determination, hopelessness and need to live. Having lost my mother at 15, Eva's pain was exactly how I felt, and I kept me hooked to watch her piece together all the beautiful yet sad laid puzzle pieces, and deception and the constant worry of betrayal from all around her, even within her own heart! Slipping between memories of her sister and herself in their youth, her constant reminders of family before a ruthless tradition forced to be upheld...I want to say, let the naysayers in the previous comments be WIPED AWAY by my review!!!! I Just finished the first book and the cliff hanger; the resolution mounting towards a plot bigger than two human(spoilers lol) princesses; In world where Eva is learning it's NOT just about them; a pot stirring that dates back to the ruthless betrayal of Khimaer by human...GOD I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!!!
Expect alot of fan art, ESPECIALLY of Aketo and Baccha cuz wooooowwwww those descriptions were sizzling!!!
I supposed to sum it up lol, beautiful BEAUTIFUL pace, amazing descriptions, very convincing and relatable characters, beautifully thorough world, and an ever expanding plot all packed into wonderfully written piece of art makes one extra satisfied reader! I love being to a world as flawlessly as you've painted Akhimar with your words, and I look forward to more about Princess to be Queen, Evalina Grace Killeen💓

A fantastic magical debut that brings a whole new meaning to sibling rivalry

4.5 stars rounded up!

Before I even get started on this review, I want to take minute to gush about how incredible this cover is! I about died when I saw the cover reveal, and all I wanted was to hold its gorgeousness in my hands. Anyways, now onto the book.

From the first few pages, A River of Royal Blood immediately pulls you into a beautifully vivid and dark fantasy world where sisters must fight to the death to prove their ability to rule as the True Heir and Queen of Myre. Princesses Isdaora and Evalina are night and day when it comes to looks and the magick abilities that they each possess. Eva possesses the magick of blood and marrow. Her magick is known for bringing death and destruction. At the age of nine, the Queen separates Eva and Isa from each other after an incident with Eva’s magick leaves Isa injured.

Now that Eva approaches her eighteenth birthday, it is almost time for her to face her sister in the ultimate battle for the Queendom. Weeks leading up to Eva’s birthday, tensions with Isa are at an all time high. When assassination attempts are made on her life, it seems that Isa is not the only one that wants Eva dead. Eva must enlist the help of Baccha (leader of the Wild Hunt) and Aketo (a mysterious khimaer prince) to teach her how to use her magick and defend herself once and for all.

I honestly couldn’t help getting swept up in this incredible story. The magick and world building was absolutely incredible. We learn about feuding races and each of their legacies. I loved learning the history behind Meyre, Dracol, and the Rhoune lands, as well as the magick and abilities that the people of those lands possessed. I thought that Baccha’s historical retellings very much felt like those intricate fairytales that are passed down over generations, and I was completely entranced by them.

I found all of the characters to be intriguing and complex. My favorites were definitely Baccha and Aketo. Baccha clearly has secrets to hide, but there’s something mysterious and alluring about an immortal being as old as he is. Aketo is the gorgeous, quiet type who definitely wears he feelings on his sleeve so to speak. There’s definitely a budding romance in this tale, but it’s unclear if Eva’s sights are set on Baccha or Aketo…to be fair, I was rooting for both because each one of them has electrifying chemistry with Eva.

Overall, if you love an emotionally charged dark fantasy wrought with incredible world building, magick, and a sibling rivalry unlike no other then definitely read A River of Royal Blood!

Thank you to Penguin Teen for providing an ARC. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own.

I am so ready for more!

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

A River of Royal Blood is a fantastic debut. It opens up a series I am sure will thrill readers. I need book two right now, okay? A River of Royal Blood is a world building masterpiece. There's so much going on from the page one: a history of subjugation and power, sibling rivalry which results in a fight to the death, and a fear of what we can't control. There are gets set into motion from Eva's birth and the first pages. For me, my favorite elements in A River of Royal Blood was Eva's quest for self-acceptance and the conflict between the Khiamer and the humans - and the general history of the world.

Gifted with the dangerous magic the first Queen had - magic of blood and marrow - Eva grows up with the fear of those around her. Even more than that, Eva comes to see her magic as wicked and something she shouldn't use. In a fight to the death the fact that Eva cannot find a mentor and that she see herself as separate from her magic leave her severely disadvantaged. But everything changes in A River of Royal Blood after an assassination attempt shows that nothing is as it seems.

An African Based YA Fantasy with Stellar Magic and Racial Tensions

The Buzz

I was on the lookout for African based fantasy YA so I was totally interested in A River of Royal Blood when I saw the cover. And while the cover doesn't slay me it's strength lies in giving us a sense right away of what this book is going to be about. Obviously magic and sisters! If we're using characters on the cover though the art should be true to those characters and not have wrong details.

A River of Royal Blood is not a title I love, its rather obscure, but it does come directly from the text... which I do like!

The Premise

A River of Royal Blood is about a nation ruled by a Queendom. Every generation the next queen is chosen through combat... with her sister. Eva is the underdog in this fight as she was born with magick of marrow and blood. This magick hasn't been seen since the first queen brutally toppled the original khimaer royalty. And I have to say the magic and the different races were the best part of the story!

From the premise and even the excerpt I read I didn't get the sense that this would centered on an internal struggle Eva deals with not wanting to kill. You're raised with the idea that you HAVE TO kill your sister to survive... so you accept that. It was really quite distracting how Eva kept going back to the past and reminiscing on tiny interactions with her sister. She only lived with her sister when very young so I just didn't get where the extreme bond came from. It was very thin for me. So when Eva kept beating her chest about killing her sister I just didn't buy it.

I did adore the different races! I've always loved the fae and we also got the khimaer, humans with animal traits like horns, sharp teeth and claws, etc. Top this with the very regular humans and we have a recipe for racial tensions! And the different races and their specialties were used really well! In fact I totally fell for many of the secondary and minor characters who embodied these races. And I liked where the story took these tensions in regards to the plot.

However I felt like we were on a mouse wheel the entire middle of A River of Royal Blood. Things happened okay. Like we met the characters that I came to adore. But I just felt like we didn't get anywhere. It felt like endless setup and then BOOM! We have a battle and it's over. The pacing just didn't work for me. I ended up feeling way more bored than I should have.

My Experience

After reading the excerpt I was really excited to read A River of Royal Blood. I was so jazzed about the different races, the magic and the African fantasy setting. There seemed to be a rich back history to the Queendom and to Eva's life.

And the end has some explosive reveals. I wasn't a fan of the sister's battle but we end at a neat part. I would actually read the next book to see where the races and the characters I love go with it all. I didn't truly get the gravity of the racial tensions while the story was setting up, which is really neat. There is a lot to like. There is a lot of potential.

But I wanted more and better interactions between Eva and her sister. IN. THE. PRESENT. I wanted LESS running around doing nothing. And I needed a character whose motivations were supported by all the back history we went over.

A River of Royal Blood has a fascinating world with three great races that I was dying to learn more about... and I got to explore them with some fabulous secondary characters. We get a true blue teenage protagonist and while I found her boring, I did find her situation heartbreaking.

I have nothing but love for this novel

I have nothing but love for this novel. The pacing was fantastic, fantasy novels can be a but info-dumpy at times but that is not the case with A River of Royal Blood. All the characters were fully developed and amazing. I wish we had seen more of Falun but that might be one of my few "complaints" with this book. I loved Aketo and Eva's relationship, it didn't feel forced at all, and happened quite naturally. The magic system is fantastic and not at all confusing. Overall I absolutely adore this novel and can't wait for book two!

Lovely World and Characters

I really enjoyed the characters, world building and the plot was pretty good. The descriptions of clothes and different species was very interesting. Cool magic system involving tattoos and magical bonding. I really enjoyed the relationships between the main character and the people who worked for her.

A fierce, magical, all-around fantastic debut!

4.5 stars

Joy’s debut is fierce, magical, and absolutely fantastic. From the very beginning, I was intrigued by the world, by its history and magic system, and as the story progressed I was caught in the whirlwind plot. I quickly became attached to the protagonist, as well as multiple side characters, and to say I was invested in their journey would be an understatement.

In some debuts, it seems obvious, for any number of reasons, that it’s the author’s debut. In others, every element is well-written, the entire book so well-crafted, that it’s hard to believe this is just their debut. For me, A River of Royal Blood was the latter.

And that ending?! Holy nuggets. I’m speechless, and in desperate need of the sequel ASAP—both so I can find out what happens next, and so I can get more Eva and Aketo content. I love Aketo with everything in me and he must be protected.

Please read this book. It deserves much more love and hype. It’s brilliant.
