Description

“McElwain gives an honest and gritty portrayal of old London, along with the gossip and scandal of the upper class. A Twist in Tim e is an old-fashioned murder mystery with a modern twinge, a strong and stubborn heroine, delightful characters, and twists that kept me intrigued until the thrilling reveal at the end.” - San Francisco Book Review “Readers of Regency romances or FBI thrillers are sure to love A Twist in Time by Julie McElwain, an inventive mix of the two genres. With its rapid pacing, slew of interesting characters and time travel, A Twist in Time is riveting. Anyone who enjoys the unusual is sure to enjoy Agent Kendra Donovan's adventures.” - Shelf Awareness “If the Outlander series were written by Lisa Gardner, this would be the result. A tense page-turner with an excellent dose of feminism, social commentary, and badassery.” - Criminal Element “Engrossing and enjoyable. The book is fast and fun to read, and watching a modern FBI agent try to solve crimes without any 21st-century tech to help is intriguing.” - Historical Novels Review “If you are tired of reading typical mystery novels, A Twist in Time by Julie McElwain might be the remedy. The novel and the series have plenty to offer: a captivating plot, an easy language which make the ready experience go smoothly, and a host of interesting characters. If you want something entertaining, this is a good pick!” - Mystery Tribune “A treasure.” - Library Journal “A smartly entertaining sequel to A Murder in Time . With its engaging characters, vivid and authentic settings, and intriguing mystery, this is the kind of book the reader wishes wouldn’t end.” - Mystery Scene Julie McElwain has freelanced for numerous publications from professional photography magazines to those following the fashion industry. Features & Highlights

  • When Kendra Donovan’s plan to return to the 21st century fails, leaving her stranded in 1815, the Duke of Aldridge believes he knows the reason―she must save his nephew, who has been accused of brutally murdering his ex-mistress.
  • Former FBI agent Kendra Donovan’s attempts to return to the twenty-first century have failed, leaving her stuck at Aldridge Castle in 1815. And her problems have just begun: in London, the Duke of Aldridge’s nephew Alec―Kendra’s confidante and lover―has come under suspicion for murdering his former mistress, Lady Dover, who was found viciously stabbed with a stiletto, her face carved up in a bizarre and brutal way. Lady Dover had plenty of secrets, and her past wasn’t quite what she’d made it out to be. Nor is it entirely in the past―which becomes frighteningly clear when a crime lord emerges from London’s seamy underbelly to threaten Alec. Joining forces with Bow Street Runner Sam Kelly, Kendra must navigate the treacherous nineteenth century while she picks through the strands of Lady Dover’s life. As the noose tightens around Alec’s neck, Kendra will do anything to save him, including following every twist and turn through London’s glittering ballrooms, where deception is the norm―and any attempt to uncover the truth will get someone killed.

Twisting the Mind, as well

The following sequel brings out more of the development of characters - but this one sets the stage for the reader to NEED to read the sequel. I am hoping that she writes a third in this series - I'm still wondering if the main character can actually be unhappy with her "plight" or if she will adjust to the surroundings and people she finds herself within and make her decision to stay. Both book are quite thick - but they keep you reading each scene is well developed enough to make it easy for a screen play to be developed from the books.... hint, hint..

Enough suspense with a touch of romance

Enough suspense with a touch of romance. Love this series. Each book has its own story and ending. I also like the fact that it has a touch of romance and not hot and heavy.

Two down & ready for more!

This is been one of my favorite books lately. This is a challenging genre and McElwain meets the challenge. The story flows well, and is as realistic as time travel to another century can be. It's also a challenge to plot a sequel that is as intriguing as an innovative first novel. I think this sequel serves pretty well. Keep going on Kendra,Julie!

I enjoyed the first book in this series so I was looking forward to book #2. This didn't disappoint. If you enjoy time travel stories and murder mysteries this has it all -- along with a strong female detective. The mysteries are always well thought out and complicated and the fish-out-of-water motif for the heroine works well.

I feel a series developing of which I will read every book as it comes.

A Twist in Time, the second installment of a new series featuring chrono-displacement victim, Kendra Donovan, was a fun and exciting murder mystery. I'm starting to really believe that the most exciting, and the least boring, type of Historical Fiction is the Time Travel kind. You don't need to cast aside or forgo your knowledge of the present day, or a more modern time, you can carry it with you and show it off and fumble through your otherwise cursory knowledge of that time period in the past.

The purposefully placed anachronisms committed by Miss Donovan, and the sheer audacity with which she all but refuses to conform to the time period in which she has arrived is what I like so much about her. Her personality is a little bit Kinsey Millhone, with the methodology of a Kay Scarpetta, and the circumstances of unexpected time travel of a Claire Randall all rolled into one 21st century FBI package.

I gave up on the Kay Scarpetta series long ago (pretty much when the age gap between Kay and her niece was mysteriously and inexplicably closing in, without the benefit of time travel or science fiction), and with the closing of the Kinsey Millhone series approaching all too rapidly, I love having discovered a new series that is just as fun and just as enjoyable to read. I can't wait to read the next installment of the Kendra Donovan series.
