Description

Review “[A] sneaky little gem . . . Sustains the difficult balancing act of melding a heart-racing espionage plot with credible dinner table conversation . . . Mr. Steinhauer specializes in tough showdowns. And the more innocently they begin, the more devastatingly they end.” ― The New York Times Book Review “A splendid tour de force . . . Without neglecting the turmoil of the geopolitical landscape, the novel focuses more intensely on the equally treacherous landscapes of the human heart.” ― The Washington Post “[A] masterfully plotted and suspenseful stand-alone.” ― Kirkus Reviews (starred review) About the Author Olen Steinhauer is the New York Times bestselling author of the Milo Weaver novels, including The Tourist and An American Spy . • Six years ago in Vienna, terrorists took over a hundred hostages, and the rescue attempt went terribly wrong. The CIA's Vienna station was witness to this tragedy, gathering intel from its sources during those tense hours, assimilating facts from the ground and from an agent on the inside. So when it all went wrong, the question had to be asked: Had their agent been compromised, and how?Two of the CIA's case officers in Vienna, Henry Pelham and Celia Harrison, were lovers at the time, and on the night of the hostage crisis Celia decided she'd had enough. She left the agency, married and had children, and is now living an ordinary life in the idyllic town of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Henry is still a case officer in Vienna, and has traveled to California to see her one more time, to relive the past, maybe, or to put it behind him once and for all.But neither of them can forget that long-ago question: Had their agent been compromised? If so, how? Each also wonders what role tonight's dinner companion might have played in the way the tragedy unfolded six years ago.

Quite a dinner!!

As a long-term John le Carre fan, I am firmly in the camp that supports the premise that Olen Steinhauer is on the same level. This intricate story is similar to a le Carre MI5 hunt for a hidden mole - but this one is hidden in the modern CIA Vienna station. Does he/she exist or is the hunt based on disinformation from a Gitmo prisoner? The story is the opposite of an action thriller - it is rich with character development of several troubled agents haunted by a terrorist attack five years ago. The action is centered on a dinner meeting of the two main characters with flashbacks revealing clues that slowly reveal the damning truth. It's trite to say, but I couldn't put it down.

Missing words/lines

Very disappointed. The book is missing random words and lines throughout the entire book. Unable to read because of it.

Printed badly

I think the story itself might be good but you can’t read it…pages are half full and sentences are cut off and paragraphs are not complete. Something really weird happened during the printing process.

Seemed like exactly the kind of book I'd like.

To be fair, I've waited too long to review it and can't recall the book.

I didn't hate it. I just didn't care enough.

This one was slightly disappointing because I am rather desperate to find someone to fill the modern role of all the great Cold War espionage writers I love. It mostly takes place in the present at a table over dinner, with a bunch of flashbacks, and it's espionage 1-2-3 in many ways. I really wish it had been "cerebral." I'm still trying to figure out why that word is used in the blurb. Maybe they meant "we hear things people think?"

We get interior and exterior of the two main characters. We see the difference from two characters, as we often do in spy novels. These two were once lovers and spies (independently. They weren't lovers because they were spies.) It started slow, heated up for a minute, then got distant again. The worst part is that it felt distant at the point when I should have been affected. I didn't hate it. I just didn't care enough.

I'll try one more of his books (a Milo Weaver story) before giving up completely.

It's just awful

Terrible story written by someone who forgot to take his Prozac. Herky Jerky with horrible sentence structure in a story that borders on Crack confusion. Can't believe this capable author wrote this. Don't waste your money on this piece of trash.

Spy Thriller

Henry tracks down an old girl friend from his daddy's working with her when they were both spies ..after a hostage situation went tragically wrong, she quit , dumping Henry as she walks out. Now, years later, he's looking to fill in the gaps of how it all went so wrong. Really intriguing way of following story from inside their minds .. we discover the past is not quite as it seemed .. I could not put it down!
