Description

I could tell you this about me in this little ditty, and it might suffice: I am a lover of oils and potions, physics and metaphysics.I seek patterns and meaning.I create my own music and magicfrom words and sounds and silence and shapesand look for kindred souls in the ruins of Pompeii. A little interpretation and my bio is done: My original cauldron was Saskatchewan, a harsh province in boundless Canada. Saskatchewan still lives in my soul and my writing. I moved to Ontario, the province of plenty, when I was eighteen. Through the interval since then, my love affairs with literature, physics, music, photography, ancient history, the soul and family life have grown strong roots. I thrive in an environment of music, Venetian glass, gardens and historic stone buildings in Guelph and of nature's cathedrals on the northern shores of Lake Huron. I happen to be Canadian with roots in England, Scotland and Norway. Having been raised by parents who were accomplished musicians, I tend to find myself "un-noteworthy". I'm not, though - I'm note-shy. I never heard my ex-concert-mistress-mother play her violin. I yearned to know her instrument. But she gave it up. Nevertheless, my younger sister and I grew up immersed in music. My mother's prodigious piano skills accompanied my father's beautiful tenor voice. Margaret and I benefited from the musical, intellectual and spiritual environment our parents created. At age four, I fell in love with Venice. My eccentric and multi-talented mother introduced me to the strange city, so physically far from Regina. Somewhere along the line, my mother had learned that Vivaldi, whose music she loved as much as Bach's, had had an orchestra of female musicians. In the 1700's? Impossible! True. It was as though my mother had lived in the city.

Features & Highlights

  • Very few knew Antonia, despite her fame as La Stella di Venezia.
  • In decadent 18th century Venice, she develops from Vivaldi’s star pupil into his musical colleague and the pride of Venetian music. After falling in love with Orlando Sagredo - master planner of the Palio - Antonia recognizes the emotional bondage she has never questioned.
  • Antonia of Venice is inhabited by brilliant musicians, avaricious politicians and ineffectual rulers of the Republic. Through it all, the people and music Antonia loves take the reader into the depths of revenge and selflessness, as the story advances the timeless, feminine heroic as a powerful and equal partner to the masculine.

She managed to lure me into the lonely life of a young and brilliant prodigy, an orphan raised and trained by Vivaldi

I am writing from the balcony, overlooking the garden and Pacific Ocean. The early morning birds are chirping, the blue surf is rolling, and the garden is in bloom. I've just finished Antonia of Venice - it's a compelling read! The characters are fascinating. The plot is riveting. Peirson, a most skillful author, took me into the midst of the Renaissance in Venice, Siena, Mantua, and the lush countryside. She managed to lure me into the lonely life of a young and brilliant prodigy, an orphan raised and trained by Vivaldi. Vivaldi became a remarkably complex human being for me and not just a composer. Antonia, an introverted and equally complex person, is freed from Vivaldi by Orlando of Siena. Drama, pathos, love, intrigue, murder - all the ingredients of excellent fiction are there, along with impeccable use of the English language and just enough "musical content" to keep me tuned in. Highly recommended.

Bravo! A first rate novel

Posted by Mary Peirson for Peter

(I read this novel manuscript before it was sent to the publisher and sent this note to Ellyn):

Bravo! I think that you have a first rate novel. It is very publishable in my opinion. It has all the readability of a Romeo and Juliet, a revenge tragedy, a rape of Helen, and a bit of Harlequin romance.

Your novel is well researched, very academic without being pedantic, a captivating prose style, an intriguing plot line which drives the reader to the end, and interesting characters. Your novel is in the mainstream of post-modern fiction with the use of real historical figures in real historical time put into a fictional story. See Findley's Pilgrim with Carl Jung or Peter Carey's The True History of the Kelly Gang. This fact makes your novel even more publishable.

Your knowledge of music and languages is remarkable and yet never detracts from the narrative. Your conclusion is perfect - leading the reader to wanting a reunion of your heroes, but with the realistic, tragic ending... yet with a cathartic sense of elation. Your geography of Venice, Sienna and Vienna is accurate.

About the question of inclusion of your poetry? Again it is typical of post modern novels to incorporate a variety of genres (a bit of dramatic form, some personal editorializing, and some poetry).

Finally, forget everything I've said and send it to a publisher now. It is an intriguing and mature piece of fiction. The revelation at the end is Dickensian; I mean that as a compliment. There were hints, but you kept it hidden to the end. Your descriptions of Antonia's hair are brilliant. Antonia, Vivaldi and Paolina are very memorable characters.

Good luck! I look forward to your next "publication".

Captivating Read

The story from beginning to end held my attention. The clarity with which she wrote about the characters, scenes, emotions and history of Venice caused every page to come alive for me. The brilliant way she interwove music into every part of the story was an added enjoyment for our family.

A Work of Art

Ellyn Peirson's Antonia of Venice is a work of art not to be missed. Her portrait of Vivaldi takes us away from the hot-headed, red-haired stereotype to a complex, gifted and caring man. Her depiction of his protegé, Antonia, is brilliant. We are drawn into her world and find ourselves caring deeply for her as she moves from childhood to old age. The author achieves this through a combination of telling her story while having Antonia reveal even more through her own poetic daily writings. Another important character is the city itself...Venice, full of beauty, intrigue, darkness and illumination. Peirson moves eloquently through her novel with vivid descriptions not only of Venice but also of Siena where Antonia attends the ancient Palio. Her characters are brought to life for the reader by an engaging narrative that is rich in her vibrant use of language. I found that I did not want this beautifully-written book to come to an end. I hope there will be more of it's kind from so gifted an author. Jane Houlding

A feast for the senses

I was entertained, moved, fascinated and compelled to read on by the weave of this story; I loved Antonia, felt her painful 'otherness' as a child, was cross with her for her foolhardy behaviours as an adolescent, was anxious for her safety and impatient to see her happily bound to a functional family. I saw, felt, lived in Venice (which I have visited) and Sienna (which I have not) in the heat of the day and the cool, dark respite of the church buildings. In Florence, the city I know best, I walked with the characters and joined in Antonia's exploration; in Vienna I re-lived my own exploration of the city and the harsh yet beautiful contrast with the ornate splendour of Venice. Throughout the story I heard the music, and my breathing changed into 'singing mode' along with Antonia's. It was exhausting!

The plot is clever and well-paced, and I found the denouement deeply satisfying. The meditation on identity is deft; with changes of name, wearing of masks, transcripts of a soul-journal, obscured parenthood... so much to reflect on. Yet above all, the author writes about longing, pining, yearning, loss and separation with such exquisite and painful clarity.

This story is a feast for the senses: sound, taste, smell, vision and touch are all evoked with great skill. I feel as though I have seen a film, or even been present during the story. I loved the book, and I feel greatly privileged to have a glimpse of the author’s spiritual self through reading it.

Ellyn Peirson has powerfully evoked the story of Anna Giraud and her two great passions: the articulation of her brilliant music

Antonia of Venice is soul-music. Ellyn Peirson has powerfully evoked the story of Anna Giraud and her two great passions: the articulation of her brilliant musicianship with her mentor, Antonio Vivaldi, and her love for a man of whom Vivaldi fiercely disapproves. In exploring this conflict, the author also illuminates the tempestuous personality of the great composer and patron of orphans, and the dark political forces which hold sway over him.

The narrative is dappled with poetry of astonishing beauty, which evokes both the sensual and spiritual nature of Anna and adds the dimension of the dream world to her life and thoughts.

Thus, Antonia of Venice combines the author’s creative skill on two levels: meticulous historical research and deep, intuitive awareness of the workings of the human soul.
