Spectacular and suspenseful! Put down your pen Clancy!
The USS Tampa, an improved Los Angeles-class attack aub is captured by Chinese naval forces. The crew are being held prisoner, what can the US Goverment and military do? The answer is here . . . recall ongoing character Michael Pacino and his superior Admiral Donchez into action on a rescue mission! And as the latest sub USS SEAWOLF closes in for the kill and a SEAL team is deployed to rescue the TAMPA crew, you're in for a treat! The naval battle scenes between US and Chinese forces are well written, the SEAL team incursion is well researched and matches the accuracy of Bob Mayer(with a little bit of artistic licence here and there but who cares?) and true-life SAS stories with its descriptions of equipment used, and the submarine scenes, as ever with DiMercurio's books are so well written that even if you've never been in the Navy you will feel you're in the thick of the action. Why isn't this a movie?! To coin a phrase! And finally, after having read all of DiMercurio's splendid novels now, I can safely say that this one is one of his best. The climax as well is not hurried, it is spread out over more than one chapter and well-paced, thrilling and effective. More so that some novels where the ending is too quick after a great build-up. THis has the great build-up as well!

Intense!
While in the search for a new sub-thriller I picked up this book. I did not put it down! The charcters are believable, the story is feasable. Action packed and intense. This book takes you on a wild ride aboard a Seawolf Class sub. A page turner that leads up to a nail-biting end.
After reading this book I purchased the following novel Phoenix Sub Zero. If it lives up to the excellent reviews I am in for a wild ride!

Clancy could learn from THIS author...
Ever since I picked up and literally devoured 'The Hunt For Red October' I have been craving everything submarine ever since, unfortunately for a long time there wasn't much in the way of sub novles to choose from (not that was any good anyway). Quite by accident I found the book, 'Typhoon' by Mark Joseph (another sure-fire winner, by the way) and my excitement for sub books was rekindled. But again, I just couldn't find an author who could fill my void...and again--quite by accident--I came across Michael DiMercurio and I have been pretty much satisfied ever since.
DiMercurio knows what he's writing about mostly due to the fact that he WAS a submariner and writes from experience. Now Clancy is no doubt a great author, but experience on a sub was something that he couldn't draw upon, and in 'Attack of The Seawolf' the experience Mr. DiMercurio has had is what elevates his stories above your average submarine storyteller. The plot isn't half-bad either--which is a definite PLUS to be sure. How would life on a cylindrical metal tube be like trapped in China? Better yet, how would America go about a rescue if that were the 'situation'? That is what we are faced with in this highly entertaining and VERY exciting novel. The action is virtually all over the place along with insights into the mind of the naval officers manning these amazing underwater machines. An all-around thrilling read that will satisfy YOUR thirst for a sub adventure, too.

SO Far So Good
Only a couple of chapters in, but excellant have read a few of his books and they have all been good enough or great enough to keep coming back, I like Larry Bond, Joe Buff and of course Tom Clancy as well so I am not surprised, and USS Seawolf is my favorite boat.

Great Action and Suspense
DiMercurio sets a good stage and presents very believable people and circumstances. This book will keep you going all the way to the end. It will take you back (if you are old enough) to the WWII movies about submarines in the Pacific that were so exciting and moving. We were really entertained and you will feel the same reading this book.

absolutely stunning
This book takes you not only in the inside of a nuclear submarine, but also in the mind of highly trained SEALs fighting to save another submarine out of the hands of the enemy. I have rarely read a book of this type twice, but in this case I did just to enjoy once more the details and accurary of certain scenes. The only bad point is that all sense for proportion is lost by the author when you realize that more than a dozen frigates, dozens of helicopters, many hundreds of Chinese sailors and even a complete aircraft carrier are destroyed to save two U.S. submarines and the lives of (most of) their crew.

"Techno-Garbage"
I've read every one of Mr. DiMercurio's books, and I usually await the release of his next one with great anticipation. Unfortunately, this one doesn't come close in quality of writing and believabiltiy of plot. The characters are poorly developed cardboard figures. The whole thing is totally predictable, and the action, as it moves along and attempts to be ever more awesome, only manages to become ever more unbelievable. I share vacation books with my friends when we go scuba-diving each year. I was embarassed to pass this one on, and was the target of "ignoramus" type remarks for the whole week after I did. Mr. DiMercurio: please, put a little more effort into your next one!
