excellent reading for the very young

A sweet book, beautifully illustrated for the very young. The text is short and describes baby's actions on her birthday (although you only find out it's her birthday at the end). My 2 years old loved it. She referred a lot to the illustrations and identified with the birthday bit. Recommended as bed-time reading.

A Classic Little Golden Book!

This book is adorable! It's a classic Little Golden Book, perfect for every child's first library. I'd recommend it as a baby shower gift, a first birthday gift, or for anytime! We are planning to use it as a guest book at our daughter's first birthday party!

I bought this for my first great-granddaughter.

I raised my own daughters reading these Golden Books and they loved them. It is so important to read to your children.

Great gift

This was a great gift for my soon to be born granddaughter. It was on the list of books my son and daughter-in-law made.

A bit of a misnomer...

This book is not really a "first book"-- at least not if you are reading to a baby under 12-15 months. I tried reading this book to my daughter at 7, 8, 9, 10 months old and she was not very interested. At that age, she really needed and preferred [(and still at 14 months loves) a more tactile experience-- touch and feel books like [[ASIN:0307120007 Pat the Bunny (Touch and Feel Book)]] or lift the flap books like [[ASIN:0689835612 Where is Baby's Mommy?]], both of which I would also put in the classic/retro-ish/timeless genre that parents who buy this book likely seek. HOWEVER, just because it is not really a good *first* book for infants or young toddlers, it is still a good one for toddlers. My daughter is starting to find pleasure in this book now that she knows a lot of the words on the pages and says them herself regularly (ball, balloon, bathtub), and because the baby in the book follows her own routine quite closely. We have the gold-spine "little golden book" version of this book. The simple, mid century renderings of a genderless baby going about his or her day are adorable and comforting for any young child. I note that the publisher is coming out with a board book version, which looks lovely, and probably will be easier for babies this age to hold and manipulate themselves. I probably would have chosen that version if it was available when I bought ours.

It kept her attention!

It kept the attention of my 18 mo old granddaughter very well. The illustrations are wonderful and the book is delightful! There is no rhyming but it really doesn't take awy from the book itself.

This book should be consigned to the trashcan of history

This book might be a 'classic' but it should not be consumed by children today.
It harks back to a time when children were expected to be seen and not heard.
It was designed to get children to conform not think for themselves.
