Description

The excitement and enthusiasm of the day are perfectly captured by the artist's bright, lively watercolors and the author's active, playful text. School Library Journal"It is a land and waterscape that reaches right down into our primordial souls — the beach, here given full inconic treatment. Using scant couplets to convey the most elemental pleasures of a day at the beach, and enticingly depicted in Smith's watercolors, this will call up memories of any reader who has spent time on the ocean's shore. From that first rush down the dunes and onto the strand—"Waves roar/ Rush, and soar!/ Rolling, crashing/ To the shore" —to the tramp back out—"Sun-warmed skin, contented grin"— it is an experience unlike any other and Roosa's got it just right. Sandcastles, swimming, softball, snoozing. Pictured details entice: kicking off one's shoes, chasing sand crabs, enjoying trays of yummy lunch. "Noon light/ Shimmers bright/ In the distance,? Hot and white." Appetite and taste take on a special edge, and then the hit of post-lunch langour: "Waves lapping/ Babies napping/ On the water/ Sails are snapping." Good stuff, simple and viscerally transporting, the waft of salt strong from the page. Over too soon." My son loves this book!

We got this book as part of our box book collection and at first I thought my toddler wouldn’t like it. Boy was I wrong! This Book is a gem! We have read it at least a hundred times in the last few months and it is one of his favorites to read over and over again. For the people that didn’t like the writing, it is simple rhymes, but it fits with the illustrations and everything going on on each page that makes it so wonderful. On each page there is something new to observe or talk about that is happening on the beach, so I have actually enjoyed reading it with him because there really are so many great scenes. Another thing I love about it Is that the characters are racially diverse and if you pay attention from the beginning to the end you can see different things happening (like the old man walking with the white dog from his house along the beach, etc.). One reviewer said there wasn’t a plot or main characters, I beg to differ, you have to read the pictures and not just the words. Things do happen In the book and my son points out the main characters, what they are doing or whom they are doing it with. This book is like a perfect day at the beach, who doesn’t like that?

There’s a hidden 2nd story

After months and months of owning & reading it my 2 1/2 yr old just recently pointed out, what I now cannot unsee, a 2nd story about a sad, lonely dog in the story. Aside from that it’s a fun rhyming story with good pictures that have lots to see in it

My 3 year old loves this book

I got this book as part of my book box subscription. I'm not really a fan of the writing style in the book. But for some reason, it really captivates my 3 yr old. He picks it out for his reading time every day.

My toddler loves it.

Got this through the Amazon Book Box program. Very fun story with nice illustrations; my daughter (19 months) loves it. Good quality board book binding as well; it won’t survive months and months of abuse by a toddler (like any other board book) but it’s fairly durable for a children’s board book and looks and feels very nice.

Cute story, my two year old really enjoys it. We bought it for our beach vacation, and she loved reading it before bed at night. The pictures are lovely as well. Recommend for any little ones to bring along on a breach trip!
