family, love, responsibility and tradition

Susan Wiggs writes about family, community, love, and tackles real life issues in the process.

Caleb Stoltz vowed to take care of his dying brother's two children. This meant he had to return to his Amish roots and raise them within the Amish community in Middle Grove, Pennsylvania. Years earlier, Caleb had left the Amish way of life to attend community college and chase his dreams. He works hard on his farm and enjoys life with his niece and nephew and seldom thinks about his life outside of the Amish community. When tragedy strikes, and he makes the decision to have his nephew airlifted to a hospital for medical care, he is thrust back into urban life. At the same time, he faces disapproval from his father, Asa, for placing the injured boy on a helicopter.

Dr. Reese Powell is working at the hospital when Caleb's nephew Jonah is brought in. Her parents are successful doctors and hope that one day she will join their medical dynasty. She is intrigued to see someone from the Amish community in the hospital. She answers his questions tries her best to make him comfortable.

When the danger appears to be over for his nephew, Caleb finds that he is also intrigued by Reese and enjoys answering her many questions. Coming from two different backgrounds, they form a friendship. Reese does not know much about the Amish way of life and as Caleb educates her, the reader is educated as well. Reese also gets to meet Caleb's niece, Hannah, who is hiding a secret.

Two different worlds collide in this book and I enjoyed reading about the Amish community. This book dealt with issues such as abuse, shunning, physical rehabilitation, acceptance, following your dreams and your heart. Her characters are faced with cultural/religious issues such as respecting someone's wishes against receiving medical treatment when it goes against his/her beliefs. The reader also witnesses what can occur when someone does something that goes against their community's rules. As in her other books, Wiggs stresses the importance of family and friendship. She also addresses what it means to have a duty to your community, keeping your word, and observing traditions.

I enjoy Susan Wiggs books. Her characters feel as if they are real life people and are faced with real situations. Her books are well written and prove to be fast reads for me. I enjoy books that not only entertain me but educated me. This book did both.

Wiggs books are also light on the romance. There are no graphic sex scenes or language. You know if her characters have sex, but she doesn't go into much detail. I know some enjoy her lighter touch to romance.

Overall, an enjoyable read!

I received a copy of this book from Edelweiss and William Morrow in exchange for an honest review. The thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own!

"Faith, work, and family, stitched together by the common thread of devotion."

Author Susan Wiggs has brought us a thought provoking tale of two totally different worlds colliding with each other.

Dr. Reese Powell is a fourth-year medical student working in Philadelphia. She's an only child of wealthy parents, both of whom are also doctors. And they have high hopes that their daughter will follow in their footsteps.

A tragic accident brings Amish Caleb Stoltz with his nephew to the same hospital that Reese practices at.

Reese and Caleb meet and there's an immediate spark between them but their lives are the polar opposites of each other.

I enjoyed this story very much. I like reading about the Amish way of life. The characters are well drawn. The storyline was different from other similar books I've read. I recommend this book highly to anyone wanting to read about the Amish way of life, about doctors, and about difficult decisions.

I received this book from William Morrow Books through Edelweiss in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.

Amish/Mennonite Fiction?

I chose to read this book because the description captured my interest, and I enjoy reading books from this genre. The first chapter captured hooked my interest even more. However, when I got to chapter 2, the second word of the first sentence was a very strong obscenity, which thoroughly confused me. I stopped reading the book and reread the description and genre to make sure I hadn't made a mistake with the genre. I thought the genre of Amish/Mennonite was supposed to be a clean read. For me, clean read means no sex, no profanity, and no gore. Therefore, I had expected this book, which was listed as Amish/Mennonite, would mean that none of those situations would be included in the book. I was clearly very wrong. In order to give the book another chance, I continued to read more of the second chapter but found that the the profanity continued. Sadly, I gave it up.

I think the story is probably a great story. However, for me, the language was a turn off and I didn't read any further to establish whether or not it really is a great story. My disappointment is in the misleading labeling of the genre. My other disappointment is why profanity? In my humble opinion, I feel it takes more creativity to express feelings (e.g. anger, disappointment, happiness or whatever) or make a point about something without the use of profanity than with.

I Didn't Finish

Toward the end of the book there is a scenario that sheds a negative light on something that is supposed to be positive in the real world.

A real life story.

This book by Susan Wiggs had me up all night. From reading the prologue to ending with the epilogue, it grabs your heart and doesn't let go. I loved Caleb and Reese and while their differences were many, they also had many things in common.
Right before the end I was beginning to ugly cry, turned the page and my heart was soaring. An excellent story.
