All rights reserved. FRANCE1910Part OneThe boulevard du Cange was a broad, quiet street that marked the eastern flank of the city of Amiens. The wagons that rolled in from Lille and Arras to the north drove directly into the tanneries and mills of the Saint Leu quarter without needing to use this rutted, leafy road. The town side of the boulevard backed on to substantial gardens, which were squared off and apportioned with civic precision to the houses they adjoined. On the damp grass were chestnut trees, lilacs, and willows, cultivated to give shade and quietness to their owners. The gardens had a wild, overgrown look and their deep lawns and bursting hedges could conceal small clearings, quiet pools, and areas unvisited even by the inhabitants, where patches of grass and wild flowers lay beneath the branches of overhanging trees.Behind the gardens the river Somme broke up into small canals that were the picturesque feature of Saint Leu; on the other side of the boulevard these had been made into a series of water gardens, little islands of damp fertility divided by the channels of the split river. Long, flat-bottomed boats propelled by poles took the town dwellers through the waterways on Sunday afternoons. All along the river and its streams sat fishermen, slumped on their rods; in hats and coats beneath the cathedral and in shirtsleeves by the banks of the water gardens, they dipped their lines in search of trout or carp.The Azaires' house showed a strong, formal front toward the road from behind iron railings. The traffic looping down to the river would have been in no doubt that this was the property of a substantial man. The slate roof plunged in conflicting angles to cover the irregular shape of the house. Beneath one of them a dormer window looked out on to the boulevard. The first floor was dominated by a stone balcony, over whose balustrades the red ivy had crept on its way up to the roof. There was a formidable front door with iron facings on the timber.Inside, the house was both smaller and larger than it looked. It had no rooms of intimidating grandeur, no gilt ballrooms with dripping chandeliers, yet it had unexpected spaces and corridors that disclosed new corners with steps down into the gardens; there were small salons equipped with writing desks and tapestry-covered chairs that opened inward from unregarded passageways. I loved the PBS series and wanted to read the book. No dust cover, could have been an oversight by me. The book itself is a good size but the print is so small, one page could fit my kindle. One needs to use a magnifying glass to read it. Disappointed is an understatement.

Writing World War One

A fan of the writer Frank McCourt, I listened to an event he spoke at and he mentioned being impressed by Sebastian Faulk’s Birdsong. I looked it up, and as a former high-school history teacher who’d prepared a three-week lesson on World War I, I eagerly read it and was impressed throughout.
While reading about Stephen and Isabelle, I felt transported to a pre-WWI Europe, with its class struggles and consolidated wealth. The recreational trips are well written, as is the ardent relationship between the two. The house itself becomes a character; it is excellent writing.
The heart of the novel is Faulks desire to show the monstrosity of the war. I read that Faulks studied first-hand accounts from soldiers to envision the overwhelming disease of the war. The characters are impacting and the chapters are riveting. It would be difficult for non-fiction to better express the burnt path across history that was World War I better than the novel does.
The last segment, with Elizabeth, is essential to recast the lives of those who served: and also to recover the war for the modern mind. Elizabeth’s story is less interesting, and I questioned by this update was included. However, the final chapter clearly shows her importance as not only a plot device but narrative. As with Isabelle, Elizabeth’s relationship choices are ambiguous and open to future pain. Even in its most satisfying moments the novel does not force a happy ending on the reader.
I’ve read different books on WWI: Goodbye to All That; Testament of Youth; The Great War and Modern Memory, among others. Birdsong stands as an exemplar novel of a distant horror.

Engrossing war novel

This was one of the most intense war novels I've encountered. Graphic descriptions of soldiers fighting to survive as well as to kill in the trenches and tunnels of WW1 French battlegrounds brought home the horrors of war and how it changes those involved. Interesting, unusual and often unfathomable characters added to the plot.

This is easily the best book I have read in recent years. You need to be emotionally prepared before you read this book. Once you get started, it's hard to put it down. It's on the heavy side; and if you are looking for light reading, do not choose this book. The story is strong and the studies of its characters are thorough. The story is long but the story line is clear and consistent. You may need a tissue box next to you. The story stays with you for a while after reading it. I high recommend this book!
