Description

Praise for The Borrowers : Winner of the Carnegie Medalxa0xa0 "A book that begs to be shared."-- The Horn Book "The magic and charm of the writing convince children and grown-ups, too, that Borrowers really do exist."-- School Library Journal Praise for The Borrowers Afield: "Readers who found Mary Norton's The Borrowers just about perfect may approach this one with the nervous premonition that it couldn't possibly be as good. It is, though--and in some ways even better" -- The New York Times Book Review "This book, like its predecessor, is a lovely thing. . . .xa0 The Borrowers are fascinating not just because they are tiny creatures in a large world, but because they are people." - -The Horn Book Praise for The Borrowers Afloat: "It is not mere extravagance that has prompted comparisons of these books with The Wind in the Willows and Alice in Wonderland , for like the truly great writers of fantasy, Mary Norton is truly original."-- The New York Times Book Review Praise for The Borrowers Aloft: "Mary Norton has a priceless gift. She can view humans through the eyes of tiny folks and tiny folks through human eyes, and make both believable." - -Chicago Tribune Praise for The Borrowers Avenged: "Like her Borrowers the author is resourceful, inventive, and patient; her imaginative vitality is limited only by her impeccable sense of logic, and the fantasy continues to be totally real and totally acceptable." -- The Horn Book — Mary Norton (1903-1992) lived in England, where she was an actress, playwright, and award-winning author of the classic Borrowers novels.

All their minuscule home furnishings, from postage stamp paintings to champagne cork chairs, are “borrowed” from the “human beans” who tromp around loudly above them. All is well until Pod is spotted upstairs by a human boy! Can the Clocks stay nested safely in their beloved hidden home, or will they be forced to flee?
  • The four subsequent books are equally charming and appealing, perfect for independent readers as well as shared reading with younger children.
  • The Borrowers Afield:
  • Driven from their home in the big house, Pod, Homily, and Arrietty take up life in a boot.
  • The Borrowers Afloat:

Beautiful Quality Book

Beautiful book.

Although it is a thick book it is not difficult to open and read...For me the text is the perfect distance from the spine and you don't have to strain to be able to read it.

I love the line drawings also in here, excited to bring a childhood classic home to my children and read. The cover is also very beautifully designed.

but the printing is too close the the binding for a comfortable read. Due to the thickness

Perhaps this is just my copy, but the printing is too close the the binding for a comfortable read. Due to the thickness, the book does not lay flat. That is fine, but the text then goes into the middle of the book and it is just more difficult to read.

An absolute classic.

I love these books for the way they sneakily get kids to look at how small household items could be used differently. OK, so they're used by miniature imaginary people, but they are still great examples of thinking outside the box (and a very tiny box it is, too). Wonderful imaginary adventures, no violence, a lot of giggles. I loved these as a kid just because they were great; now I love them for my grand because, well, they're still great. The original illustrations are a treat, too, a far cry from the disneyfication of kidlit. Can't wait for bedtime story time.

Great buy for your young reader!

This book was purchased as a Christmas gift for my granddaughter. I read the books when I was a kid and had very fond memories of them. I love the fact that all of the books are in one. I was, however, surprised at the thickness of the book. I would highly recommend it for the pre-teen reader in your life.

all the original illustrations!

I love this collection! It's so hard to find Norton's series in the original (used bookstores are always out!) but this one replicates the originals perfectly.

the stories are great.

The book is very thick and a bit hard to hold but other than that, the stories are great.

Great imagination story

Got this book because I got a dollhouse for Christmas and I follow a couple sites. A lady was making a borrowers room for her dollhouses. I ordered the book to read about them and find it enchanting!
