Definitely an agenda here.

Warning: spoiler alert. I've read many book by this author and absolutely LOVED some of them, but this one left me feeling manipulated, not something I appreciate as a reader. I've read at least a dozen of her books, but will think twice before picking up another.
She makes the two main characters people you really end up liking and rooting for, but in order to completely pull this off, she has to make the teen's mother into a complete stereotype. If we're going to end up cheering for the teen who's "come out," then we're supposed to hate her mother who kicks her out because of this announcement. Of course, the easiest way to do this is to make the mother a "fundamental Christian" who is as cardboard a character as they come and completely devoid of any emotion or sensible thought. As in,
Christian = intolerant, judgmental. Okay, that was an easy character to write. This just reinforces a nasty, negative stereotype that anyone who claims to be Christian is hateful to anyone who is gay/lesbian. Sorry, Catherine Ryan Hyde, I'm not going to let you off the hook that easy on this one. It makes me wonder if she actually KNOWS (in real life!) any genuine Christians because the people I know (myself included) who are Christ followers would NEVER act the way she had this character act. Of course, it was convenient for the plot, but sadly, all it does is reinforce negative stereotypes.

Lots of Awful Mothers in this one.

Heartless mothers who turn our teenage girl out on the street, who beat with a broom handle, who cheat the state, who nag, whine, and assume the worst. Indifferent dads and boys in gangs no better. These are the characters with whom our heroine, homeless Molly, must contend. Then she finds two-year old Etta, discarded on the streets, and life gets tougher. This one's a grim read -- if you think shelter in place is tough, wait till you read what Molly has to contend with. Altogether somewhat disappointing from the prolific author who wrote Pay It Forward and Take Me With You.

Nothing is as it seems

While you cannot judge a book by its cover, the cover of this book grabbed my heart. The story is well told and there were times when I wanted to wring the neck of the mother but she did manage to EVENTUALLY get her act together and do the right thing. This insight into the life of a young homeless person saddened me.

LOVE!! this Story and Book!

Beautifully written. Love this Book. Another winner by this Author. This Author has a gift for capturing the feelings and heart of the "powerless" among us, and knowing what that is like, and moving us to care for them, as I so do. I was crying as I read this Book. I hated that judgmental mother in Utah, so much. I recommend this Book truly.

Believable characters

Many of the situations described are disturbing, but very real. The characters may not always be likeable, but they are also very real. The book looks realistically at our humanity which is always messy and sometimes ugly. But it ends on a note of hope. And don’t we all need that?
