But when the arrangement requires the reluctant Anne to follow Niall Campbell back to his home, she soon discovers that peace is not so easily achieved. Before they even arrive, rumors about her abound, and her safety is threatened. Meanwhile, Niall's ascension as leader of his clan is in jeopardy, as a traitor works to bring about his downfall. As Niall and Anne begin to see beyond each other's defenses, love takes them by surprise. But will it be enough to defeat their foes? Or will the truce be broken, their lives forfeit, and war return to their beloved land? Not Historical Fiction Or Christian Lit

First off, this is not a book of historical fiction. Yes, it takes place in 16th century Scotland but the dialogue and story doesn't lend itself to giving the reader a feel for that time in history. Nor would I consider it a Christian novel. Some readers are offended when they "mistakingly" read a Christian-genre novel, this book certainly is not heavy-handed in the least where that is concerned. Actually, the references to God and Christianity seem like an after-thought. The main character believes in God and believes she should live her life accordingly to her beliefs. The story is not faith-affirming which is what I think a good Christian story should be. I believe the author was trying to cover too many bases, "romance, Christian, historical, mystery" and did not really hit any of them. I found the book to be tedious to read.

A Page Turner

I really enjoyed this book and read it twice within a year. I loved the Scottish dialect. I felt it contributed to the realness of the characters and the setting. There's a gentleness and sweetness in the women being called Lass and Lassie that you don't get in other languages.

It's a little bit 'fairy taleish' in the way that the hero keeps dragging himself from his death bed to step in at exactly the last moment to save the heroine from peril, but as far as fiction goes, I really liked it. Besides, the heroine Anne, has spunk of her own. It's a fun and entertaining read and what more can you ask from a book of fiction.

Good Read

Morgan brought ancient Scottish Highlands to life with animated culture and brilliant recreation of traditions that would otherwise be hard to imagine as regular life of that time. Mysterious and inspiring, a good read!
The other two books of These Highland Hills are not sequential, but are also good reads.

Interesting Read

I did not know what to expect when I opened the cover of this book. I went in completely blind. The beginning was a little bit too slow for my taste and I easily anticipated what was the conflict. (I had not read the back of the book summary/synopsis.) I did not easily anticipate, however, the many twists and mysterious turns Morgan left to be guessed.

Some characters were more easily loved than others at first. Anne, for instance, is instantaneously likable from the start, as is Iain. It's Niall I had to warm up to. Honestly, I was rooting for Iain to sweep Anne away--despite the fact I knew she and Niall would end up together--for most of the book. Although Niall eventually swayed me over. ;-)

This book was written in third person but Morgan's style made me feel like it was written in first and from Anne's perspective. That is something I really cherished about this book. Something else I liked was when Anne made a huge sacrifice that threatened her life all for two people she loves. That, to me, makes her an excellent heroine.

Morgan preformed very well in bringing to us a thought out and researched setting and dialogue. The superstition about witches and Anne's healing knowledge proved all to be accurate. Overall, I was quite impressed with this book and I look forward to reading more by this author.

Romance, suspense, Kilts and swords!

What's not to love about a highland man. Your typical love story of the brute the girl never wanted but fell in love with. Then you add the fact she has to battle all the evil and hateful people who don't want her there anymore than she wants to be there. You can also factor in the lustful, let me throw myself at you and you can have me wench to muck everything up. This is a classic story of the girl realizing she loves the man and he loves her.
