Description

From the Back Cover The Great War has ended at last. No longer must archaeologist Amelia Peabody and her husband, Emerson, the distinguished Egyptologist, fear for the life of their daring son, Ramses, now free from his dangerous wartime obligations to British Intelligence. But in the aftermath of conflict, evil still casts a cold shadow over violence-scarred Egypt. The theft of valuable antiquities from the home of a friend causes great concern in the Emerson household. Ramses’s strange encounter with a woman costumed in the veil and gold crown of the goddess Hathor only deepens the mystery. And the brutal death of the suspected thief washes the unsettling affair in blood—setting Amelia on a terrifying collision course with an adversary more fiendish and formidable than any she has ever encountered. About the Author Elizabeth Peters earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago’s famed Oriental Institute. During her fifty-year career, she wrote more than seventy novels and three nonfiction books on Egypt. She received numerous writing awards and, in 2012, was given the first Amelia Peabody Award, created in her honor. She died in 2013, leaving a partially completed manuscript of The Painted Queen .

A fantastic finish

Believe it or not, I think rereading the series is even more enjoyable than the initial experience. However, "Children of the Storm" is not one of the better books in the series. Barely rates a four, an extra star added only because of the fantastic finish.

As usual with the later books, Amelia and Emerson are eclipsed by Ramses and Manuscript H. To be honest, I enjoy the manuscript parts much better when narrated by Nefret, though this happens infrequently. And the twins are ridiculous. The only positive regarding them was at the very end (though still unbelievable) in the way they finally spoke. Payback time for Ramses, but poor Nefret.

Even when Ramses was young and at his most precocious, I always enjoyed his character, but strangely enough, I found him very annoying in this book and unbelievably naïve (I can certainly see why Nefret gets annoyed with him at times). Most everyone (with the exception of Nefret and Amelia to a degree) did not even consider Maryam/Molly as one of the troublemakers. Why? She certainly had a good reason for nursing a grudge not to mention she had romantic designs on Ramses in the past.

The good points. I really enjoyed the scene when Walter found out about Sethos' true identity. And I always love when Walter, Evelyn and some of their family make an extended appearance in the book.

I also really enjoyed the ending on the boats (with Nefret and Emerson held captive; the Amelia in hot pursuit; the rescue operation, etc.). Tense and action-packed with the perfect touch of humor (I'm thinking of the eye patch).

As I said, not the best in the series, but certainly far better than numerous other books in print. This series as a whole rates a 10.

Wonderful, of course.

Children of the Storm is yet another wonderful book by Elizabeth Peters. If you have not read any of the Amelia Peabody series and are curious, you can start with this book, and not be confused. The author spends a little time (not too much!) explaining who is who, and what, why, and where. Elizabeth Peters is my favorite author, she brings history to life, correctly, in detail, and with no boredom or blood and guts, who could ask for more?

It's so good!

It's so good! Only 34 pages to go and then onto the next one. The author draws on her vast knowledge of Egyptian history, both ancient and contemporary to her characters, and paints a beautiful, yet rousing story.

I love all of Elizabeth Peters books, mostly this series. I tell just about everyone who ask what I am reading now that they should get the series. Great writing and interesting background.

Elizabeth Peters

Currently reading the book. It dovetails nicely with the previous episodes that I've read.

Requiring additional verbalage that serves no purpose is pointless.

Elizabeth Peters Series

Great series. Amelia Peabody is one tough gal but lots of fun. In these books you learn all about Valley of the Kings and what happens there. You learn about the diggings and what is found. This series is from a real lady's diaries. Very good read.

Unintentional?

I love all of Amelia Peabody's books. But I have to tell you, when I came to the phrase "the Professor and Maryam," I was laughing out loud. I can't help but wonder if the naming was deliberate.
