Description

Backdropped by the Vietnam War and the Manson murders, Cruel Beautiful World is a fast-moving page-turner about the naivete of youth and the malignity of power. Leavitt explores with a keen eye the intersection of love, family, and the anxiety of an era. Lily King, author of Euphoria Tender and tragic, with a shooting star of hope, Leavitt's profound latest is about the connections of siblings, the mystery of love first, last and dangerous and the struggle to accept what can never be changed. Sara Gruen, author of At the Water s Edge "With Cruel, Beautiful World , Caroline Leavitt has done the seemingly impossible: she's written a gorgeous, seductive novel that is also terrifying and pulse-pounding. This is the kind of coming-of-age novel for which readers yearn: we witness the emotional and spiritual evolution a sixteen-year-old girl while American society, in the early 1970s, seems to devolve all around her. Like the era it represents, Cruel, Beautiful World is at times hopeful and nihilistic, beautiful and savage, mesmerizing and dangerous." Wiley Cash, New York Times bestsellingauthor of A Land More Kind Than Home and This Dark Road to Mercy Two sisters impulsive Lucy and sensible Charlotte make decisions that will haunt the rest of their lives. Set in the tumultuous late 1960s and early 1970s, CRUEL BEAUTIFUL WORLD is a riveting novel about love and loss, secrets and lies, and what it means to be a family. Its twists and turns will keep you reading late into the night. Christina Baker-Kline, author of Orphan Train Leavitt's most accomplished book yet, Cruel Beautiful World , is a seamless triumph of storytelling that follows an unusual family through a fraught and shapeshifting century. The edges and complications of their individual natures lead them towards fatal or redeemable choices. Some make it and some do not in this cruel, beautiful world. Gail Godwin, author of Flora I was mesmerized by Caroline Leavitt s new, breathtaking novel. She has spun a masterful web of seduction and loyalty, infatuation and love. At the same time Leavitt reveals how porous the line can be between truth and lies and how so much that happens between us is a matter of perspective. It is hard to read this novel and not think of Lolita and also of Dan Chaon s psychological thriller, Await Your Reply. But this is more than a dark tale of predator and his victim. It is also about family and friendship, of sisters and that ties that bind. And in this end this poignant and complex novel is a story about how we tell stories and the narratives that become our lives. Mary Morris, author of The Jazz Palace At once a page-turner that leaves you holding your breath, and a gorgeous meditation on love and family. Cruel Beautiful World had me in its thrall from start to finish. J. Courtney Sullivan, author of The Engagements Cruel Beautiful World is a stunning novel about life, real life, the sort in which mistakes can bring unfair consequences and family loyalty is a source of tremendous grace. Leavitt is a magician at creating unforgettable characters, and the two sisters at the heart of this tale will stay with me in all their complicated humanity. A brave book, and a powerfully moving one. Robin Black, author of Life Drawing Fierce and tender at once, Cruel Beautiful World flames with the sweetness of new love, smolders with bitterregret, and burns with all the mistakes in between. Peopled with gorgeously flawed characters, Caroline Leavitt's newest novel is a wonder of triumph and tragedy. Miranda Beverly-Whittemore, New York Times bestselling author of Bittersweet and June " Leavitt paints her characters with deep flaws and yet hugely redeeming qualities. The writing is rich and real and provocative. Her literary momentum shows no signs of slowing." Ginny Greene, Minneapolis Star Tribune"Cruel Beautiful World hits the sweet-spot between popular and literary fiction with finely honed writing, complexity of character motives, and enough guilt and secrecy to sustain the page-turning suspense." Carol Brill, New York Journal of BooksNuanced and engrossing." -People Magazine"A seductive page-turner that ripples with an undercurrent of suspense and is fueled by the foibles of the human heart." -The Boston Globe, Karen Campbell "Leavitt excels at the nuanced relationships..and the shifting loves and loyalties..layers of complexity and vulnerability." -The San Francisco Chronicle, S. Kirk Walsh "Leavitt expertly draws us into the lives of her stormy characters and deftly narrates their coming of age in a world in which women's roles are changing. And she perfectly executes Lucy's Lolita-like story, injecting it with a kind of claustrophobic atmosphere reminiscent of Emma Donoghue's "Room." -The Washington Post, Carole Memmott "Leavitt brings to life the chaotic days of Viet Nam protests and the Manson murders as the setting for a complex story of the relationship between two sisters and a predatory teacher. The result is a captivating, timely-feeling thriller." Elizabeth Taylor, 5 Hot Books, -The National Book Review "Leavitt's 11th novel will keep you captivated." - Real Simple, The Best Ten Books to Read this Month "A devastating exploration of how love can impel one to terrible depths and lofty heights. . Too few books truly challenge our own hearts, no matter how hard they may aim for it; Cruel Beautiful World hits its target." - Wendeline O. Wright, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette When I was 17, a friend of mine was murdered by her much older, more controlling boyfriend--someone she had been with for five years. I never forgot it, but until I was in a controlling relationship of my own years later (Google my story "The Grief Diet,") I couldn't understand how someone could stay. I set the novel in 1969 and 1970, the time when the peace and love movement began to turn ugly, when Woodstock turned into Altamont and the Manson murders. The novel is so much about how we yearn to fix things and fix people, but sometimes we cannot, no matter how hard we try. Sometimes all you can do is step back and let life wash over you. Caroline Leavitt is the award-winning author of twelve novels, including the New York Times bestseller Pictures of You and Is This Tomorrow . A book critic for People magazine , her essays, articles and stories have been included in New York magazine, “Modern Love” in the New York Times , Salon , and The Daily Beast , among others. The recipient of a New York Foundation of the Arts Award for Fiction and a Sundance Screenwriters Lab finalist, she is also the co-founder of A Mighty Blaze . Read more

Caroline Leavitt is a master of her medium and it's very much on display here.

Even as a rather jaded reader, I am filled with admiration for Caroline Leavitt’s novel CRUEL BEAUTIFUL WORLD. I was swept away by the richness and fluidity of her writing, the highly effective use of period detail, the expertly handled structure, the truthful and haunting characters—all illuminating a story that poses powerful questions about loyalty and responsibility in a dangerous, chaotic and self-involved world. There’s so much universality in this story’s specificity, and it had me re-visiting and re-assessing some of my own familial and intimate relationships of both past and present and finding affirming and sometimes surprising insights. Ms. Leavitt is a master of her medium and it’s very much on display in this compelling novel. Highly recommended.

Great read!

I loved the way the story drifted back and forth between the characters and also provided the back story for all of them. I plan on reading all Caroline Leavitt's other books.

I loved the way the author plunged me deep into the action from the very first line, then skillfully and thoroughly introduced me to the characters one at a time... they felt very real, and I enjoyed being part of their lives... thought I had the ending pegged about halfway in, but was delighted to be SO wrong - Leavitt had a MUCH better ending! I love being surprised! I'm a big fan, and I think that this is her best novel yet.

Anticipate a new and beautiful world even if it's cruel at times.

I enjoyed the novel "Cruel Beautiful World" immensely because the characters were very real to me. I especially liked a mother who found love in the last decade of her life. The author, Caroline Leavitt, gave hope to all who seek love. She expressed that love can come at any time.
The title shows that life can be cruel yet beautiful at the same time, Sometimes it comes in an unexpected way. The characters were ready to embrace the world that existed in the past and the present.

I recommend this novel to anyone who loves a love story that is told in a very intriguing manner. Caroline Leavitt is a fine author and I plan to read her other novels.

Stupendous and Rivetting

This story hurtles forward with a ferocity that is both stunning and disturbing. At the center is a young woman who believes in love and takes every kind of risk to follow the man she believes loves her too. Compelling and provocative, Leavitt's writing is flawless--a master storyteller at the top of her game. Highly recommended.

Suspense at its finest!

I got this book from BookBrowse for an online book discussion. I really liked it and loved that the author let you draw your own conclusions on some of the events that happened in the book. The characters were very believable and I thought the story was great. Parts of the book were rather shocking, but overall I highly recommend this book.

Caroline Leavitt’s eleventh novel, Cruel Beautiful World, is both a gripping page-turner and a deeply moving character study. Sisters Charlotte and Lucy lose their parents as young children and come to live with their nearest relative. Two very different girls, they remain close growing up, until one day Lucy runs away with the high school English teacher. With skill and finesse, Ms. Leavitt digs into the souls of her characters, and the reader follows, thoroughly engrossed. Cruel Beautiful World is an intense, satisfying story full of tragedy and loss, tenderness and hope, and the love that binds a family.

Cruel Beautiful World is the perfect title for this book as ...

Caroline Leavitt delivers a compelling story dealing with complex relationships ranging from siblings to parental to lover as she skillfully lets readers inside the lives of her five main characters. Leavitt’s ability to seamlessly step into each character and see the world and events of the day from their POV’s is what makes this book so compelling.

Cruel Beautiful World is the perfect title for this book as Leavitt explores the heartache of love won and lost, love found after decades of loneliness and love outside legal and moral boundaries and the tragic consequences of that love that ripples through each of Leavitt’s characters.

I highly recommend this book, but don’t expect the traditional seven step hero journey here or even the single protagonist model. The writing is excellent, the trip taken is worth the time.
