Description

Based on the author’s own tumultuous journey from boy to man, this epic traces young David’s progress from his mother’s sheltering arms to the miseries of boarding-school and sweatshop and the rewards of friendship, romance, and self-discovery in his vocation as a writer. A cherished favorite with generations of readers (starting with Dickens himself), this novel combines a compelling narrative with a memorable cast, from the brutal Mr. Murdstone to the exuberantly optimistic Mr. Micawber. Unabridged republication of the classic 1850 edition. After a childhood blighted by poverty, commercial success came early to Charles Dickens (1812-70). By the age of 24, he was an international sensation whose new novels were eagerly anticipated. Two centuries later, Dickens' popularity endures as readers revel in the warm humanity and rollicking humor of his tales of self-discovery.

Features & Highlights

  • "Like many fond parents, I have in my heart of hearts a favourite child," confessed Charles Dickens in the preface of this novel, "and his name is David Copperfield." Millions of readers have taken young David into their hearts as well, weeping over his misfortunes and exulting in his triumphs. Dickens' seventh novel,
  • David Copperfield
  • , appeared in 1850, by which time he was a British national institution. Based on the author's own tumultuous journey from boy to man, this epic traces David's progress from his mother's sheltering arms to the miseries of boarding-school and sweatshop, and the rewards of friendship, romance, and self-discovery in his vocation as a writer. In addition to its compelling narrative, the great appeal of
  • David Copperfield
  • lies in its memorable cast of characters. From Mr. Murdstone, the brutal stepfather, to the scheming clerk Uriah Heep, the novel is peopled by vividly observed characters. Nursemaid Peggoty, bursting with vitality, leaves a trail of flying buttons in her wake. Grandiloquent Mr. Micawber is ever-confident that something will turn up to save his large brood from penury. Kind by wildly eccentric, Aunt Betsey Trotwood accepts counsel from the wise fool, Mr. Dick, and provides a heated reception for trespassing donkeys. Dickens' genius was comic, and
  • David Copperfield
  • reflects his view of existence as a mixture of laughter and tears — with laughter uppermost.

Children' edition of David Copperfield

It was not clear to me that this was a children's edition. It could be mostly my fault, but I think that needs a lot of emphasis.

David Copperfield

This is absolutely one of my favorite books of all time, probably tied with Jane Eyre for that title. The meticulous, loving detail with which Dickens renders David's world for the reader creates a source of complete and delightful escapism. It sounds kind of dumb and corny, and I'm cringing slightly as I write this, but reading this book makes you feel like David is sharing his soul with you!
The characters are so vivid, creative and wonderful - the Micawbers, Aunt Betsey, Uriah Heep, Steerforth, Peggoty, Rosa Dartle, Traddles, Dora and David himself, of course. Most of them fall into the categories of people I'd love to know in real life, and people it would be simply awful to know!
This book has everything I love about Dickens, and everything I love about books in general - delightful humor, sentiment that is legitimately moving, earnestness, tragedy, and a plot and set of characters that are truly captivating. David Copperfield is delightful, warm and beautiful - a book that I was able to completely immerse myself in and feel happy while reading.

Used Copy

Do not buy the used copies of this novel. I found one being sold on this site by "Quality Bargain Mall" and refuse to read it; why? The novel that I thought I was buying was a 736 classic novel by one of the greatest authors to have ever lived; what I received was a barely-240-page, illustrated "novel" dumbed down to accommodate younger (8 I assume) readers.

If I wanted to buy a book for an eight year old, I would. I bought a classic, and made a classic mistake by buying used. Do not do it.

Also, I have no issues with the story; this review was merely on the book itself, not the story it held. I'm sure Dickens wrote a fantastic story, but I refuse to read a book that butchers a classic beyond comparison novel.

... reading all of Dickens works and this is my favorite so far

I'm in the process of reading all of Dickens works and this is my favorite so far! It's a huge book but it's written so well that it goes by quickly. The characters are so fleshed out it's as if you are actually getting to know a real person. You just don't see fiction like this anymore.

Two Stars

Complicated and lengthy! Time to read and follow Charles Dickens's plot is necessary.

Personal Opinion

I love it. The book is very thick and the price is excellent. It is the perfect addition to my bookshelf`s classical section. Though it may not be fancy it retains all that makes it wonderful, the words of Dickens.

Ages Well

I love Dickens and have enjoyed reading David Copperfield again. Each character came back to life, but reading it over 35 years later I found I had different reactions to them than I did all those many years ago. Worth it to re-read again and again. How can one not become as involved with these characters as did David Copperfield?
