Description

From Booklist Gr. 6-9. The third book in Warriors: The New Prophecy series finds the four clans being driven from their territories as the "Twolegs" relentlessly denude the forest with their huge machines. The small band of cats that undertook a quest for the StarClan returns home with a new mission: to persuade all the clans to unify for a long, dangerous journey to a new home. The feline characters remain true to their natures, and, as expected, the danger level is high. Fans will relish this eminently satisfying episode in a series rooted in Hunter's first Warriors novel, Into the Wild (2002). Sally Estes Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved The young feline heroes of The New Prophecy have finally made it back to the forest—but their quest is far from over... Now they must convince the fiercely independent Clans to travel together to a new home, through dangerous territory and without a clear destination. If they do not, their world will be destroyed, and the Clans will be lost forever.... Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. In addition to having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. Leafpaw called into the forest. There was no reply. Desperation rose in her belly like bile. The wise medicine cat had guided her many times before in dreams; if ever Leafpaw had needed Spottedleaf's help, it was now. "Spottedleaf, where are you?" she called again. The trees, heavy with leaf, did not tremble in the breeze. No prey-sound whispered in the shadows. The silence tore at Leafpaw's heart like a claw. Suddenly an unfamiliar yowl echoed in her ears, forcing its way into her dream. Leafpaw opened her eyes with a jolt. For a moment she couldn't think where she was. Her fur was ruffled by a cold draught and instead of a soft mossy nest there was strange, cold, shiny web beneath her paws. She stood up in panic and more shiny web grazed her ears. Wherever she was, it was a very small space, hardly taller than her. Taking a deep breath, Leafpaw forced herself to look around, and everything came rushing back to her. She was trapped in a tiny den, with walls, floor and roof made entirely from cold hard web. There was just enough space to stand and stretch, but no more. It was packed among other dens, lining every wall of a small wooden Twoleg nest. Leafpaw longed to see the stars, to breathe in the comforting presence of StarClan and know they were watching her, but when she looked up she saw nothing but the nest's steeply pitched roof. The only light came from a shaft of moonlight that streamed through a small hole in the wall at one end of the nest. Her den was on top of others; the one directly below was empty but beneath that she could just make out a bundle of dark fur. Another cat? Not a forest cat, since its scent was unfamiliar. The shape was so still, it must have been sleeping. If it was alive at all, Leafpaw thought grimly. She listened again for the yowl, but the cat that had cried out was silent now and Leafpaw could only hear the soft mewling and shuffling of cats trapped in the other dens. She sniffed the air but recognized no scents. An acrid Twoleg stench filled the nest, tinged with fear. Leafpaw unsheathed her claws, feeling them catch on the shiny web. StarClan, where are you? The thought fleetingly crossed her mind that she was already dead, but she thrust it away with a shudder that made her claws scrape against the floor of the den. "I see you're awake at last," whispered a voice. Leafpaw jumped and craned her neck to look over her shoulder. A heap of tabby fur stirred in the den beside hers and she smelled the unmistakeable Twoleg-tainted scent of a kittypet. There had been kindness in the she-cat's voice but Leafpaw felt too wretched to reply. Her mind flooded with bitter memories of how the Twolegs had trapped her while she was hunting with Sorreltail and brought her to this awful place. She had been separated from her Clan and locked in darkness. Overwhelmed by despair, she buried her nose in her paws and closed her eyes. Another voice sounded from a den further along. It was too quiet to make out the words, but there was something familiar about it. Leafpaw lifted her muzzle to taste the air, but all she could smell was a sour tang that reminded her of the herbs Cinderpelt used for cleaning wounds. The voice spoke again, and Leafpaw strained her ears to listen. "We must get out of here," the cat was mewing. Another cat answered from the far side of the nest. "How? There's no way out." "We can't just sit here waiting to die!" the first voice insisted. "There have been other cats here – I can smell them, and their fear-scent. I don't know what happened to them but whatever it was must have scared their fur off. We've got to get out before we become nothing but stale fear-scent!" "There's no way out, you mouse-brain," came a rough mew. "Shut up and let us sleep." The words made Leafpaw feel sick with fear and sadness. She didn't want to die here, leaving nothing but a reek of fear! She flattened her ears and closed her eyes, clawing for the safety of sleep. "Wake up!" A voice hissed in Leafpaw's ear, jolting her out of troubled dreams. She lifted her head and looked around. Watery sunlight filtered in through the hole in the wall, though it did nothing to lift the chill from her fur. In the weak dawn light she could see the tabby she-cat in the den next to her more clearly. It was soft and well groomed, and Leafpaw was conscious of her own matted pelt as she stared at her. She was definitely a kittypet, plump and soft-muscled beneath her tabby pelt. "Are you all right?" asked the kittypet, her eyes wide with worry. "You sounded as if you were in pain." "I was dreaming," Leafpaw replied hoarsely. Her voice felt strange, as if she hadn't spoken for several days, and as she spoke memories of her nightmare came flooding back: images of water – swollen rivers scarlet with blood – and great birds swooping out of the sky with thorn-sharp claws. For a heartbeat, Leafpaw saw Feathertail hidden in darkness and then swathed in starlight, and without understanding why, her paws trembled. Outside a Twoleg monster roared into wakefulness, bringing her back to the wooden nest and the den that pressed around her. "You don't look well," the kittypet commented. "Try eating some breakfast. There's some in the corner of your cage." Cage? Leafpaw wondered at the strange word. Is that what this den is called? The kittypet was nodding through the web that separated the two ‘cages' toward a half-empty holder of stinking pellets. Leafpaw looked at the Twoleg food in disgust. "I'm not eating that!" "Then at least sit up and give yourself a wash," the kittypet urged. "You've been hunched up like a wounded mouse since the workfolk brought you here." Leafpaw twitched her shoulders but didn't move. "They didn't hurt you when they caught you did they?" the kittypet asked. There was concern in her voice. "No," Leafpaw mumbled. "Then get up and wash yourself," she went on more briskly. "You're no use to yourself or any cat moping around like that." Leafpaw did not want to get up and wash herself. The web floor scratched against her paws, and blood oozed from beneath one of her claws. Her eyes stung with the filthy air that filtered into the nest, fouled by the monsters outside. And StarClan had sent no comfort to ease the desperate fear that gripped her heart. Continues... Excerpted from Warriors: The New Prophecy #3: Dawn by Erin Hunter Copyright ©2006 by Erin Hunter. Dawn

As usual with the Warriors books, Dawn picks up right where Moonrise left off: The questing cats are just now returning home with their news that the four Clans must leave their forest home in search of a new one. But many things are holding them back, including the fact that three ThunderClan cats have been taken by Twolegs, including Squirrelpaw's sister Leafpaw. As the Twolegs destroy more and more of the forests, the Clans reluctantly realize that they have to work together and search for a new home as one Clan.

You get Squirrelpaw and Leafpaw's point of view from this book, which is good, because you finally get to see that Squirrelpaw really is one of the questing cats, and not just the annoying appentice that she was in previous books. Her relationship with Brambleclaw, which blossomed all the way back in Midnight, grows more in this book. There is also more about the rest of the ThunderClan cats that were so important in the previous series and were before just background in The New Prophecy. Also, Firestar makes a comeback from the father figure he was turned into in Midnight. In Dawn you get to see more of the hero that he was as the main character in the first series. The Tribe cats also return, and a new kittypet character, a friend of Leafpaw's, is introduced here.

All in all, Dawn is the best of the New Prophecy series, and I recommend as much as any of the other Warriors book. Like many others, I'm now awaiting Starlight, the next book in the series.

More of the Same; And 'The Same' is Exellent!

Yup, Erin Hunter's done it again. This new addition has given readers no more or less then they expected; a completely staisfying read, DAWN follows the five remaining heros and Leafpaw exactly where we left off.

The book begins with a shattering discovery; the Twolegs, who had been destroying the forest at alarming rates, cut down the fourtrees. Every Clan, already weakened by starvation, took this as a sign that Starclan had deserted them. Then Brambleclaw, Squirrelpaw, Tawnypelt, Crowpaw, and Stormfur return, bringing hope and news that not all the Clans accept. Leopardstar in particular refuses to leave the forest when the Twolegs have gone nowhere near her territory.

Meanwhile, ThunderClan has more pressing matters to deal with. It soon becomes apparent that Brambleclaw is not the only one with strange dreams; Squirrelpaw, after a night-time visit by Spottedleaf, she and a patrol of ThunderClan cats are able to rescue Leafpaw, Cloudtail, and the other trapped Clan cats (including a kittypet that just might become one). Unfourtunantly, their victory is not unhindered; they lose Graystripe to the Twolegs.

Finally, all the clans agree to travel together. With the help of 'a dying warrior' - though not the sort anycat expected - the cats, now one bedraggled clan, make their way over the mountains.

It's great to see the characters mature, and the relationship between Brambleclaw and Squirrelpaw is predictable but heartwarming. There is also the reappearance of the Tribe of Rushing Water, first seen in MOONRISE, and of Brook, a tribe she-cat that stole Stormfur's heart. Together the Clan cats face death, love, loss, and struggle with loyalties.

Hope is a big theme this book; the hope of the Clan cats, struggling as they never have before to find a place where they belong and can reside in peace. I cannot reccomend it more highly.

the darkest and best one of the new prohpecy

once again, erin hunter astonishes you with another great read of everyones favorite forest cats. so far, hunter brings her darkest chapter to the new series that never holds back anything. i think thats why these things are so good, cause hunter never holds back and will do anything for a good read. after a long journey, the five cats have returned home to find it completly ravaged by the twolegs. now all they have to do is one thing...convince the clans to leave the forest. but doing this is beyond maddness when the clans have lived her for so many years. and how could they convince four waring clans to come when they dont even know were to go? riverclan refuses to leave and shadowclan wishes to go solo, even that cinderpelts ominous warning still rings for each clan. not only that but what about the missing cats? leafpaw can only wait inside her twoleg prison hoping for a miracle. can they convince them all to leave there home? or is it already to late? read this great read, for when your done you would be drooling for starlight, the next in the new series.

Perfection at its Best

This was such a good book! I mean literally, I think Im the first person in my hometown to read, if not get, this book. i was posed at the bookstore at nine o clock. well, anyway this was an amazing book. second only to the darkest hour, the explorers come back with the news that thaey have to leave. everybody in thunderclan was more than willing, but they still felt the rifts between the clan strongly and they risked leaving certain cats behind. leafpaw is trapped in a cage, and squirrelpaw will risk anything to get her out. a certain cat is lost and may be dead or turned into a kittypet! i felt like i wanted to kill those people 4 destroying the forest becaus erin hunter did such a good job portraying the feelings of these cats. so please, get this book. you'll love it!

a dark end leads to a hopeful new beginning

the five clan cats of the six return home safely, and terrible news await them. cats have been taken by twolegs and the twolegs are destroying the forest with their monsters. squirrelpaw's beloved sister leafpaw goes missing, cloudtail & brightheart are taken by twolegs as well as many other cats in other clans. the five clans must desolate the forest, or the clans would perish along with the forest. thunderclan, windclan, and shadowclan are willing enough to leave the forest, but riverclan are not as easy to convince because they still have an abundance of fish in the river and are unwilling to just throw them away. as time goes on, more tragedy occurs, some good happens to the clans, and there is a bit of romance with squirrelpaw & brambleclaw. what awaits them in the end is a whole new beginning.

dawn was the most amazing, the most action-packed of all the warriors books. this book really showed the emotions of each cat and their feelings for one another. dawn was the first book in the series to have all five clans work together as one, from the beginning to the end. i am now awaiting starlight and the rest of the series to come.

The entire series is a masterpiece!

The Warriors series is the best ever! Erin Hunter really gives you a cat's perspective without making it cutesy. For example, many cats die in the books and many of the prophecies are dark like this one: Before there is peace, blood will spill blood and the river will run red. I would recommend this to you, for if you haven't started reading them, start NOW! But make sure to read them in order. It may be quite confusing if you don't, since there are so many stories and so many characters (a little like the lord of the rings trilogy).

My point is, BUY THE SERIES and if you don't, you're missing out BIG TIME.

Dawn

Dawn is probably the best of the New Prophecy books so far, in my oppinion. The characters we came to know in love in the original Warriors, such as Firestar, Graystripe, Sandstorm, etc, have a greater role in this story, while at the same time, our new main characters are still the center of focus. It's like the best of both worlds I suppose. All the intereaction between the clans and their leaders made this book really unique and very interesting to read. Filled with plenty of suspense and drama for our warrior kitties :)

New home, New Prophecy.

This is one of the best books yet (the best in the new prophecy). I can only name one downside, and that's that Midnight the badger doesn't even apear other than that this book fits the usual mix of action, tension, and romance only more.
