Description

Review “Murphy’s Dublin feels immersive and authentic, and even minor characters add depth and detail . . . This is an auspicious series debut, and hopefully the luck of the Irish will hold for many more stories to come.” — Bookpage STARRED REVIEW “[Murphy’s] irrepressible debut provides a lively entry in the Dublin Driver Mysteries. A bad review can kill a restaurant—but what if a restaurant kills a reviewer?”— Kirkus Reviews “Dead in Dublin serves up an interesting whodunit story as it helps push the cozy mystery genre forward into the new decade. One cannot help but be curious to see how this new series unfolds.” — Criminal Element About the Author Catie Murphy , who has written numerous award‑winning fantasy and Sci‑fi books under the pseudonym C. E. Murphy, began writing around age six, when she submitted three poems to a school publication. The teacher producing the magazine selected (inevitably) the one she thought was by far the worst, but also told her—a six-year-old kid—to keep writing, which she has. She has also held the usual grab‑bag of jobs often seen in an authorial biography, including public library volunteer (at ages 9 and 10; it’s clear she was doomed to a career involving books), archival assistant, cannery worker, and web designer. Writing books is better. She was born and raised in Alaska, and now lives with her family in her ancestral homeland of Ireland.

Features & Highlights

  • Escape to Ireland with this charming whodunnit… Cozy fans will be entranced by the beautiful setting, the pair of adorable Jack Russell puppies, and of course—the deadly mystery at the heart of it all!
  • In Dublin’s fair city, where the girls are so pretty, murder occurs at the feet of sweet Molly Malone . . .
  • Ferrying tourists around Dublin for the Leprechaun Limo Service makes quite a change after years in the military. Still, Megan Malone is enjoying her life in Ireland. She likes the scenery, the easy pace, the quirky, quick-witted locals. Everything—except having one of her clients drop dead at the statue of fabled fishmonger, Molly Malone.   Most restaurant critics notch up their share of enemies. Elizabeth Darr, however, was a well-loved international star. She and her husband, Simon, had just had dinner when Elizabeth collapsed, and spoiled seafood is the first suspect. The restaurant’s owner, worried her business is doomed, begs Megan to look into it. Between her irate boss and a handsome Garda who’s both amused and annoyed by her persistence, Megan has her hands full even before she’s cajoled into taking care of two adorable Jack Russell puppies (which she is almost definitely
  • not
  • keeping). But if cockles and mussels aren’t to blame, can Megan find the real culprit . . .before another fishy death occurs?

Not My Favorite

A cozy mystery has a problem finding a heroine who has a right to be investigating the crime. Some are able to succeed, but I don't think that Megan Malone does. She is more of a busybody than an investigator in that neither she nor anyone she knows is the person in jeopardy of being falsely accused.

The book is well written, but none of the characters made me want to spend more time with them.

Don’t Bother

This book was just way too slow for me. I didn’t even finish it.

Fun mystery that makes me want more!

What a great story! Megan is a wonderful character and the descriptions of Dublin make me want to visit again. I love mysteries that have bodies on the ground early and this did not disappoint. I didn't figure out "whodunnit" until Megan did. Already pre-ordered the next book. (I know she's going to end up keeping those puppies!)

Disappointed

I DNF. Really disappointed because I love stories that take place in Ireland. I don't have time for authors pushing agendas... I don't have time for anyone or anything that makes things about race. Won't read anything else by this author.

Absolutely delightful read

I'm so glad i happened upon this book - midway through it i bought the second and pre-ordered the third. This book has humor as well as a lot of great characters that make the story.

The lead character of Megan Malone is a strong female character that goes beyond these usual type of books - there is a certain formula where the main character falls into the mystery, but in Megan's case, she has a maturity to her based on her prior experience that makes it all the more believable. As the story progresses, you meet her friends (some of whom happen to be famous, but show the reader that they're real people as well) - and with these friends she tries to help while solving a mystery that she can't walk away from. Her Irish detective is thankfully not a love interest (though there's definitely some spark there) but they acquaintances who become friends through solving the mystery (as annoying as Detective Rourke kinds her at times, she does end up leading him the right direction towards the killer.) The other characters in the book (such as Megan's boss and workmates) help flesh out the book and keep things lively as you read along.

Overall this is a fun book that makes you want to pull up a map of Dublin and follow around as Megan races around the city, either as a limo driver or in pursuit of facts that will help her with her natural curiosity that she knows will get her into trouble. I enjoyed it very much and will probably pick up anything this author writes if it is of this same caliber. Definitely recommend!
