Description

From Booklist Sheriff Joanna Brady has a full plate. Not only is she investigating the murder of an ex-con and trying to find out who beat one of her animal-control officers nearly to death, she is also spectacularly pregnant. The question isn't whether she will solve these two crimes, but whether she will do it before or after she gives birth to her second child. While most of the police force is focused on the case of the animal-control officer, it's the ex-con's death that occupies Joanna's mind because--in addition to the tantalizingly bizarre fact that all of the victim's fingers are missing--the murder provides a link to one of her father's old cases. Jance deftly combines personal and professional stories in this twelfth Brady mystery. Readers familiar with the movie Fargo (which also features a very pregnant, very likable small-town sheriff and combines on-the-job with at-home elements) may note some similarities to this novel, but rather than seeming derivative, Jance's story offers an entertaining embellishment on a still-fresh theme. A solid entry in this popular series. David Pitt Copyright © American Library Association. Features & Highlights

  • Juggling a family and a career is never easy—and it's becoming a real challenge for Sheriff Joanna Brady. Coping with the impending delivery of her second child as well as a staff short-age, the last things Joanna needs are two serious crimes.
  • First, the body of an unidentified man is found in the desert, all of his fingers savagely severed. Following the scant clues, Joanna learns that the victim was an ex-con who had served twenty years in prison after confessing to the murder of his pregnant wife. During his last days he was seen following and photographing a young woman.
  • Then one of Joanna's officers is brutally attacked and left for dead while on an unauthorized stakeout. Because the officer is one of its own, the department throws its resources into finding her attacker. But the murder haunts Joanna. Strapping on a bulletproof vest, she'll risk everything to see that justice is done.

Another winner

I appreciate writers whose characters develop over time and don't stay frozen in a specific decade. Ms. Jance is wonderful at both and this latest in the Brady series is no exception. A new baby is on the way and many old friends still with us plus a great mystery, what more could one ask? Well, maybe knowing more about Joanna's legendary father and Ms. Jance provides with just that. Let us hope she keeps up this and the Beaumont series for years to come!
