Description

"A new conspiracy thriller comic that should appeal to anyone with a fondness for The X-Files."-IGN "It is FANTASTIC. Can't wait to read the whole series!"-Patton Oswalt "The hype on this is real."-Brian Michael Bendis PUBLISHERS WEEKLY -- This twisty paranoid thriller follows a secret government organization devoted to "making sure that conspiracy theories stay conspiracy theories." Cole, an FBI researcher, gets recruited to the shady Department of Truth and is paired with Ruby, a seasoned agent. Initiated into the reality-warping revelation that "the more people believe in something, the more true that thing becomes," they race to stop Satanic sacrifices, Reptilian invasions, a flat Earth, and dark alternate histories of America from becoming real. Simmonds's streaky painted art, strongly reminiscent of Bill Sienkiewicz, gives the series the feel of a classic 1990s Vertigo comic, as does the nightmarish X-Files-like atmosphere. The plot, though, takes a while to coalesce and sometimes wanders into simply describing conspiracy theories and how they work. In the age of QAnon, a thriller about cultlike thinking feels exceedingly relevant, but it's sometimes uncomfortable that the comic jams seriously dangerous beliefs like school shooting "false flags" against fringe goofiness like tinfoil hats and dark doings at the Denver International Airport. But it's a visual treat, and the setup has the potential for further uncanny adventures, provided the story can gel. (Mar.) "Hickmanian conspiracy games, Burroughsian crime, Sienkiewiczian style. The Truth: you want it." -Kieron Gillen "Genuinely one of the best comics you'll read this year. Do not miss it."-Scott Snyder PUBLISHERS WEEKLY -- This twisty paranoid thriller follows a secret government organization devoted to “making sure that conspiracy theories stay conspiracy theories.” Cole, an FBI researcher, gets recruited to the shady Department of Truth and is paired with Ruby, a seasoned agent. Next level graphic fiction

I was a huge fan of the first volume and told all my friends that it was one of the best written comics for actual adults to come along in a very long time. Like probably ever. That said, I was of course worried that the second volume would somehow fail to live up to the high level of the first. Fortunately, that fear has proven completely baseless, as Mr. Tynion and company have managed to not only totally fulfill all the promise of the first volume, but to also somehow dig down deep, and level up their game. I just want to say Bravo! and thank you guys for giving us a truly deep and relevant uncomic. I call it an uncomic because this work really has very little to do with comics. The art is incredibly dark and moody, and laden with symbolism and deeper meaning. The story just keeps getting better and better. Seriously. This is some truly inspired writing. In this volume Mr. Tynion fills in a great deal of fascinating background information on the Department of Truth, and just what it is they do. Even though the truth of the matter is that no one is really sure about what they do because let's face it, certainty is only for fools. He also manages to successfully go indepth to almost fully resolve a nice chunk of Cole's backstory. So while nothing is of course ever fully revealed or resolved it still feels like you are learning a great deal about the story. I'd argue that this is the true mark of a great writer. He manages to fill in the blanks, and yet still leaves you with a burning craving for more.

This is some next level graphic fiction people! Highly recommend stuff.

Slight dip in momentum from the 1st volume but still amazed by the quality of the series.

The Department of Truth, by James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds (Image)

In 2021, I picked up this trade just after it received Eisner nominations for “Best New Series”, “Best Continuing Series”, and “Best Writer”. Tynion went on to win “Best Writer” for his body of work in 2021. In 2022, both the series and Tynion are recognized with nominations again (“Best Continuing Series” and “Best Writer”). Volume 1 was extremely well-developed and well-executed. It’s intended to be dark and heavy, but manages to be intelligent and engrossing. Simmonds art is very fitting for the theme (reminds of a combination of Sienkiewicz and Maleev). Volume 2 had a slight drop-off in momentum from the first but I was still amazed by the quality of what Tynion and Simmonds were piecing together.

Solid Second Volume, Looking Forward to Several More

My previous comments all hold true for this follow-up volume. The story and artwork are outstanding.
