Description

Praise for Elite : "Another fascinating chapter in Joy's saga that successfully marries fantasy and science fiction for teen readers."― Booklist "Avoiding a second-volume sag with plenty of charisma, this outing proves to be a satisfying read that takes the baton neatly from the first and leaves readers ready for more."― Kirkus Reviews Mercedes Lackey is the acclaimed author of more than fifty novels and many works of short fiction. In her "spare" time she is also a professional lyricist and a licensed wild bird rehabilitator. Mercedes lives in Oklahoma with her husband and frequent collaborator, artist Larry Dixon, and their flock of parrots.

Features & Highlights

  • Science fiction and fantasy meet in this fascinating series from acclaimed author Mercedes Lackey.
  • Joy knows she'll be facing more dangerous Othersiders than ever before as a new member of the Elite Hunter unit, but if anyone is up to the challenge it's her. She's been Hunting these monsters since she was a child, and has a pack of eleven fiercely protective magical Hounds. Then the rules change. Monsters unlike any Joy's ever seen or even heard of are breaking through Apex City's barriers, and the Hunters are scrambling to find new ways to fight them-all the while hiding the true danger Apex faces from the Cits, who are ignorant of the severity of the Othersiders' attacks. The leaders of Apex must come together to protect the city, but tensions have never been higher between the Hunters and the powerful PsiCorps, with each group competing to be the primary protector of the city. The conflict escalates even further when Joy starts discovering bodies of Psimons while patrolling the city sewers on a special assignment from her uncle, who commands the Hunters. Someone is killing Psimons, and if Joy doesn't uncover the true culprit she might just take the fall for it.Chaos erupts when Ace, the murderous Hunter who tried to kill Joy at her Elite trials, escapes from the Army's captivity and defects to the Othersiders. Joy has no idea what Ace might be capable of with the help of the cunning Folk, but she may be about to find out; Othersider forces are gaining strength and momentum just beyond the barriers. A storm is approaching Apex City, and unless Joy and her fellow Hunters put up the fight of their lives, it might just sweep them all away . . .

Really enjoyed the first book in this set (Hunter)

Really enjoyed the first book in this set (Hunter). This book was still enjoyable but I found myself tripping over little consistency issues. For example, Joy's fellow hunter, Mark, talked about his fiancee in the first book by the name "Verity". In this book, her name is given as "Jess". A more serious consistency issue is with how psimons come into their powers. In some conversations they are born and grow up with them and in others the powers "pop" in the same way a Hunter's powers do. I still liked the book, but it wasn't as smooth a read for me as the first one because of things like this.

Excellent 2nd in series of 3

This second book in the Hunter series broadens & deepens your view of a post-apocalyptic world coping with intersecting magical realms and how human society has restructured itself to meet the new reality. Teenage protagonist meets & masters challenges.

Good sequal

Joy makes elite, but in the process an enemy comes forward. In this sequal, he escapes captivity which was very loose and joins forces with a group trying to shut down the town and it's people. Attacks become more and more often and finally, a large force is brought to bear. Good Sequal. I'll read the next.

I recommend anything written by Mercedes Lackey

Enjoying this series from one of my favorite authors. Patiently waiting for the next book to come out in paperback. I keep these and the paperback takes up less room. Keep in mind there are two types of paperback. When it just says paperback, the book is the same size as the hardback. If you want what we oldsters called paperback, you need to wait for the mass produced paperback. It is also cheaper but sometimes it takes a long time to get it.
