First time Sandman reader mostly satisfied.

After reading and enjoying Watchmen, I decided to delve more into graphic novels, and this came highly recommended. I'm not one for superhero comics, but stranger, more literary ones, and this was perfect for me. Like so many excellent short story writers, Neil Gaiman does something that probably isn't for everyone, but is something I love: he doesn't tell you everything. In standouts like Dream and Death, a lot is left to the imagination.

For example, one of my close friends is mostly a superhero comic reader, and I convinced him to read "Dream," as it is probably my favorite story in the book. After reading it he simply looked confused and shrugged his shoulders. It simply wasn't for him. I would recommend getting it from a library if you haven't read it before. Though I think most comic book fans should enjoy it. I liked it enough to buy Absolute Sandman Volume 1.

There are two experimental style stories in the book, despair and delirium. Despair, unfortunately, does not work so well. The hard to decipher style was interesting at first, but by the end I was just sick of it. I know some people who think that one's the best, but I didn't enjoy it. Delirium, on the other hand, is done in a similar style, but is probably the second or third best of the seven stories.

I was also surprised by the power of Destiny, the last story in the volume. Despite it's brevity, the art, writing, and overall vibe one gets from the story are excellent.

I haven't read enough of the series to say if this is a good starting point or not, but coming from a new fan of comics, it's very excellent. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Gaiman delivers .

This collection takes a daring detour from what Gaiman did in the Sandman comic. Each story oozes with his signature "otherworldly" awe which makes the reader feel as though he's in a magical universe. The artwork is stellar and matches each story perfectly. Gaiman takes a less grandiose approach to the characters, and does a nice job of revealing some of their inner workings, but not too much. Overall, I loved the stories; but this collection is definitely not the best entry into the Sandman canon. But the stories are fresh and interesting and look beautiful. That said, I never feel cheated when I read a Neil Gaiman story. Even if it isn't my cup of tea, or not among my most beloved, I always appreciate the effort and care he puts into each of his works.

7 Stories about The Endless

A mixture of stories & art styles, some more pleasing than others but overall some good Sandman side stories. The first 3 stories, mainly Death & Dream's (the 1st & 3rd) were my favorites. A fun read I'd recommend to Sandman fans but not really a must read.

What can I say for Gaiman's work that hasn't already been said? I love his work and this is no exception. The book itself is in excellent condition.
