Something deep inside of my belly clenched, sending a rolling wave of nausea through me. "I don't know." Damian stared down at his fist. "Please don't do this. Please don't go. If you do ... they'll take you from me. Forever this time." He closed his eyes. "I can feel it. If you go, I will lose you." I crossed to where he stood and put my hand over his. When he looked into my face, his expression was bleak. "Together we can do anything, remember?" "But we aren't doing this together. You're going alone." With my free hand, I reached up to cup his face and gently pulled his mouth toward mine, until our lips met. He trembled beneath my touch, threatening to break apart. He'd let me past the careful wall he had built around himself for so many years, giving me the power to hurt him more deeply than I could probably imagine, and that knowledge made me want to scream and cry and never let him go. His arms came around me, his hands clutching at my tunic as he pressed my body against his. The desperation we battled seeped into our kiss, evidenced by the bitter taste of salt on my tongue from tears. I wanted to lose myself in the heat of his touch, in the need that pounded through my blood, coalescing in my limbs and belly. But I couldn't do that to him. I couldn't love him completely and then leave him alone. With a gasp, I tore myself away and he let me go. We stood motionless, breathing heavily, and then I said, "I'll come back. I promise." He just stared at me, silent and resigned. Summoning every ounce of strength I had, I turned and strode away, toward the curtain that hid the door to the passageway. Just when I lifted the fabric to pull it back Damian spoke. "I love you, Alexa." I didn't dare turn around and look at him, afraid it would be my undoing. "I love you, too." And then I stepped out of his sight and into the darkness. Read more

No real plot-just heroine leaves powerless teary eyed king over and over in order to save him.

I am sorry i ordered this last book--book 2 was a disappointment , but i thought maybe she would pick it back up in book 3. But i'm not even sure i will finish it. There is not really an interesting plot in this series. it started out potentially interesting with the first book, but after that it's basically been about role reversal of an old plot, where the female constantly cries and watches the man go into battle. so in this one the main theme is the heroine again and again leaves the teary eyed hero as she goes off for some exploit to save him and the kingdom. the plot in the last one is ridiculous. in book 2 she stabs a friend under the bad guy's power to get away and leaves him with the bad guy, which we assume means knowing he could be killed. then the whole plot of book 3 is that she gets a message that the bad guy will harm the guy left behind. so now she has to go back and get him. huh? added to that she is keeping a secret that endangers everyone around her and just keeps king of forgetting to tell people. i can allow for some stretching of belief for a plot, but this goes too far and just is lazy . instead of creating something actually exciting, tension is attempted to be created by this silly theme.

Loved 1 & 2, 3 is eh

I read the first two books in this series back to back and looked forward to the third, so perhaps the jump in time between books took a toll, but I honestly turned the last page and thought, “Well, that was dumb." ***SPOILER ALERT*** Everyone dies except the two main characters and I mean EVERYONE!! Okay, there is the exception of Lizbet and Jax, but anyone else who helped the protagonists or anyone I was rooting for didn't make it to the last page. For that reason, it was too convenient for the King and Alexa to be the last two standing while everyone else perished. At the very end when the 3 all-powerful sorcerers come out and decimate all the dark sorcerers I wondered why they had holed up in their temple to let hundreds of people die instead of using their all-powerful magic 3 months or even 3 hours earlier. Alexa even makes a similar comment. Something like, "they were too late to save Rylan, but they saved the rest of us." Seriously, Rylan died like 15 minutes earlier. What were the sorcerers doing? Playing cards? Taking a bath in the magic waterfall?

This book gets three stars because I really enjoyed the first two, but the series wrapped up on a weak note in my opinion.
