Features & Highlights
Hope rises in the hearts of those still left standing, but safety seems to be just an illusion. In a single night of shattering terror, Plum Island is destroyed, and key scientist Dr. Kate Lovato is abducted.
The end has arrived...
Almost seven weeks have passed since the Hemorrhage Virus ravaged the world. The remnants of the United States military have regrouped and relocated Central Command to the
George Washington Carrier Strike Group.
It's here, in the North Atlantic, that President Jan Ringgold and Vice President George Johnson prepare to deploy a new bioweapon and embark on the final mission to take back the country from the Variants. With his home gone and his friends kidnapped, Master Sergeant Reed Beckham and his remaining men must take drastic measures to save what's left of the human race. But not everyone at Central Command has the same plan for victory. As the Variants continue to evolve, only a handful of heroes stand between the creatures and mankind's total extinction. One way or another, the battle for the United States of America ends here.

Knocked It Out of the Ballpark
Absolutely an outstanding end to a super series. Can't say enough about this book. A lot of author's will take liberties in the final chapter or final book to turn everything that went previously on its head. Nicholas Sansbury Smith held true to his characters and delivered a fantastic ending filled with honor and respect to the men and women who fight and die for this country. Great job.

Be prepared for the ride of your life!! What an exciting ending to a very frightening yet believable series! I found myself wishing for more free time to read this book and when I did, it hurled my emotions from one end of the spectrum to the other. From sheer terror to the devastation of loss of life to national pride and hope, you'll experience them all in this story! Do yourself a favor and read this series, you won't regret it!

One heck of a fight for the human race!
Finished reading Vol 5 & it was fantastic for those end-of-the-world types. It ended on a sad & good note. Hopefully, there will be more. It can go in various directions, Military characters are well developed & the plot moves in a good pace. I will be looking forward to Mr. Smiths future books as they are written.. keep up the great work! ☺

Outstanding ending to one of the most amazing series I have read.
Extinction End is a most outstanding ending to one of the most amazing series I have read. The final book in the series certainly did not disappoint. In fact it defied all my expectations and ended in a bang.
I am sad to see the series end as it has been a most amazing whirlwind of a journey. I have become so attached to the characters. I will miss Beckham, Kate, Fitz, Big Horn, Davis and of course Apollo. These characters have taken me on many adventures in which they had everything thrown at them. When they felt anguish or sadness, I felt it too. I had to put the book down at some points to take a breather as it was quite overwhelming. Mr Smith certainly has a way with words that will just yank and pull at your heart strings. I was amazed at the ideas that Mr Smith came up with in this book. Poor team Ghost just have everything thrown at them, the variants just keep getting more formidible and the pressure just kept mounting for the rest of survivors on Plum Island.
This story has a fast paced, action packed and intruiging storyline with some of the strongest characters I have read about. If you have not read not read the previous four books in the Extinction Cycle series I suggest you go forth and do that, right now. If you have read the previous books and are wondering if you should continue/finish the series... I would not hesitate. This book it a fantastic ending to the series and has a really strong ending which was most satisfying. I felt completed after finishing this book but can't bear to pry myself away from this most incredible world and heartwarming characters. It would be fantastic if the series were to be continued in the form of a sixth book. That is something that I would be most ecstatic to see... hint hint :)

My new nickname is Sarge
This is the final book in the Extinction Cycle series...for now at least. :)
I was really excited to read this book because I won the character contest, to have my name used in the book. I mean, that was absolutely not the only reason I was excited. I was excited because I love Nick's writing, and I love the characters and the story of this series. Now that I think of it, I was mostly just anxious about having a character named after me. What was going to happen to me? I had told Nick that he could obviously do whatever he wanted but also had my blessing to do so, and that if my character were going to die, I'd like for it to be in the most spectacular way possible. Maybe ripped to shreds by a pack of variants, you know? I won't tell you what happens with that; this is a review, not a spoiler. But I was anxious to read for that reason.
Which is why I put the book down for a full day or so, half-way through. Why am I telling you this? Because I was mad at myself for doing so, and I was anxious to get back to it. So I sucked it up and kept reading.
I'm glad I did. This is a fitting conclusion to the series, but it also leaves open the possibility for future additions without doing major reworkings of the usual cast of characters (I'm not gonna tell you if/when/how so-and-so lives/dies/becomes a variant/wait, is that even still possible? I don't think so). Which I loved. Because regardless of any potential future Rico adventures, I loved this series from the bottom of my little heart.
It's well-written. The characters are developed without being over-developed. You know, I don't need their entire life story, just some meat about what makes them...well, them. These are people you root for, sit on the edge of your seat for, and get bummed over losing.
It's fast-paced. I cannot stand books that drag on and on. So yeah, there's a LOT of action in this book. And I'm glad. Because it keeps me reading! But it doesn't go so fast that I have no idea what the hell just happened.
It's a situation you could see yourself in. But only if Donald Trump becomes president.
No, I'm kidding. But it's scientifically plausible. Of course like any good post-apocalyptic story, there requires some suspension of disbelief, but honestly...not that much.
I'm getting tired of writing (I'd rather be reading), so basically, this review boils down to this:
If you haven't read the first four, do. If you have, why are you reading this review? Read the book, already. :)

I have seen a lot of much longer and more informative responses (than mine) from readers like myself on how we all loved this on
Hi again all!!!. I have posted reviews for all 4 EXSTINCTION books....and am here to write a quick one on book 5. I'v read several other reviews on the past books in this gripping....exciting....suspenseful series.....and I have to say......I have seen a lot of much longer and more informative responses (than mine) from readers like myself on how we all loved this ongoing drama of the characters from the mind of the brilliant and talented author.... Nicholas Sansbury Smith! But im gonna give it my best shot anyway.....hehe. All I can say is I loved it!. Great characters....supurb plot....and non stop action that makes yer heart pound! Its sad to see the series end....but it was done with style and taste........I actually got choked up at times towards the end! (no spoilers here folks). I concider Mr. Smith a talented writer ....and look forward to his works in the near future (HELL DIVERS anyone? woohoo!!) Hes a great author who actually goes out of his way to respond to fans!......and that means a lot to us fans....right!!? Like i'v always said.............keep writing them....and I will keep reading them! John in California.

The End.
Ready yourself for some heartache and some suspense. People die that you don't want to die and people are still power hungry even amongst the few that are left. I can't believe how much the Juvenile variants have evolved. I liked the way Nicholas Sansbury Smith ended the series because it doens't give us full closure and leaves the door open for other options. Even if there isn't another series, the ending is action packed. While reading the book i only had about 10 pages left and I was still in the middle of some intense action! I hope the author revisits this series someday but in his epilogue he is correct in stating that team ghost definitely needs a break. I think this is one of those series (like Jurassic Park) that I will read again and again when I get the itch. I also hope it's made into a movie!

KUDOS Nicholas Sansbury Smith
Having now read all 5 of the Extinction books, I want to say EXCELLENY. BRAVO.
Nick tied all the loose ends together, and not in a sappy way where "everyone" comes home in 1 piece the way they started out.
Sad to lose several of the additional Ghost team members.
Funny that Reed reinforced his promise to Kate by "slipping her a little tongue" ---cracked me up!
Respect and Heartfelt Gratitude to Fitz/Riley/Meg with the passing of the token
I do have to admit to crying so deeply when Reed met his match
And I still say how scary that we could potentially do this to our own species..and look at the change, morphing to adjust to just what the leader of the food chain had to to survive.
I will re read this series in a few years and continue to share it in the meantime and count ti among my favorites.

Best Book Ever!
This book has it all. I was so glad when the wait was over and I could finish the series but now I am sad it has ended. I really liked the way the author took the time to remind the reader of all the good guys that were lost, not only in this book but in the whole series. I really liked the way the book ended. The fight wasn't over but it gave the reader closure. There was a number of places that I thought the author could have stopped and milked the story for a 6th book but I was grateful that he finished it in 5. You should read this book but please start with book 1.
