Firing Point

Wallace and Keith have written a superb action thriller with believable characters (mostly) and a complex, realistic plot, a mixture of military, financial, and international intrigue. It's the kind of book Tom Clancy used to write before he went corporate with his novels. The pacing is excellent, bringing the plot threads along together to a great finish. I have recommended this to others who enjoy international action novels, and they have also enjoyed it.

George Wallace, a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Navy Submarine service, and Don Keith, a professional journalist/writer collaborate on this intensely exciting military thriller.

A Russian nationalist coup attempt is combined with a software-borne assault on the New York Stock Exchange by the Russian Mafia, with some greedy Americans trying to get some action on the side, to make a complex, fast-moving read.

If you're not sure how submarines and SEALs could be the major part of this story, then you need to read this excellent novel to enjoy how seamlessly and naturally Wallace and Keith weave an entirely plausible, multi-threaded plot together.

I love Wallace's ability to take us into the various spaces of a nuclear submarine with complete authenticity, both during normal watch duty as well as during battle scenes. You can tell that he's been there.

The writing style is that of Tom Clancy: short vignettes that advance multiple sub-plots along a path that is at first mildly confusing until the book gains steam, which it does rapidly.

The only criticism I have of this book is that it would have been helpful to have a cast of characters to which the reader might refer. With a little web research, I found that this is actually something of a sequel to an earlier book written by the duo, called Final Bearing. I'm definitely going to read that one, although Firing Point is so complete and self-standing that I never got the sense while reading it that I was reading a sequel.

Seriously, if the only time you read a fun book like this is a summer vacation at the beach, get the book, and go find a beach, now. This is a well-written, fast-paced, gripping read.

Warning: the language is a little rough in spots, and there are a few scenes that don't need to be in the book. Other than that, it's a great novel.

It is a quick and infectious read. Rarely has an author captured the nuances and brought the reader directly into the control room of a submarine during a sea battle...George Wallace provides the reader a unique position in the undersea battle where you actually feel you are there next to the captain and his crew. The subplot is well done.

The book was ok, but I enjoyed the movie ("Hunter/Killer") much better. The book was essentially "split" between two stories: (1), All that stupid stuff dealing with the Russian "manipulation" of the stock market (Booooring..!!), and (2), the interaction between the State Dept, the Seals, and the crew of the sub. Yes, I saw the movie first. I thought the acting and the performances of the actors & and actresses were pretty much first rate. The book? It sucked - big time! Don't waste your time on that one!!

Firing Point was a pretty good read. I did have the feeling, however that each author had a story, and they just collaborated to put the two together in one book. One story is about a renegade Russian trying to take over the world with submarines, and the other is about a renegade Russian attempting to take over the world's stock markets. I thought that making the renegade in charge of both missions was a stretch. I did enjoy reading it, though.

Great read !!! Could not put it down. I know people have used that term but its true. Action is fast. Can not wait until there next book. Great job to both of you. Look out Clancey !

These 700 pages written in 2012 portray some nasty Russian Mafiosas hacking into the NY stock market instead of the 2016 election. That could not happen,right? The submarine and SEAL chapters do form the basis for the action movie Hunter Killer which all high school and college kids should watch. They can learn that bad people with nuclear toys can end the world! The lessons in Navy technology are great for amateurs like me.Read the book to also see that some greedy Americans will sell out their souls and your life for riches.Definitely worth the time to read!

It combines the fast pace of an attention holding thriller, the twists of events, the interweaving of many players, and a believable story that was hard to put down for the night.

It reminded me of reading early Clancy and WEB Griffin. I cannot wait to finish Final Bearing.

I have read fictional "submarine thrillers" before, so I thought this would be good but more of the same. I was mistaken - and pleasantly surprised! This story could easily play out today and show up in tomorrow's news. While it is militarily accurate (written by a former submariner), you can appreciate the accuracy without being bogged down by the facts. The characters and subplots are easy to follow, making this an easy read - even if you have to put it down. Which brings me to my last point - tough to put this one down, right from the first pages! I can't wait to see this as a movie!
