Seen from above they must appear like berries along a stem, dense or sparse depending on the river traffic that flows through. Crescent-shaped fishing boats skim the waters with threadbare sails that catch the wind with the hollow flap of a heron's wing. Larger boats carry people or cargo: bamboo baskets, coconut and long sticks of sugarcane that curve on their weight down to the water's edge. There are landing ghats along the riverbank with bamboo jetties that stick out over the floating water hyacinth. Here the boats stop and people get on or off and take the meandering paths that lead through the rice fields and bamboo groves into the villages.Once a week, the big world passes by in the form of a paddleboat steamer bound for important destinations: Narayanganj, Dhaka, Calcutta. It shows up on the horizon, first a tiny speck the size of a peppercorn, and grows to its full girth as it draws closer. An Oxford or Cambridge education was, after all, the ultimate dream of many Sylhetis and, being poor, they often did have to scrape and crawl their way to get there. Even with surplus brains and a full merit scholarship, many fell short of the thirty-five-pound second-class sea fare to get to England. Sometimes the whole village pitched in, scraping together rupees and coins to send their brightest and their best into the world, hoping perhaps he would return someday to help those left behind. But most of them never did. chapter 3Shibani slipped around to the pumpkin patch near the woodshed behind the house. She cupped her hands over her mouth and called like a rooster across the pond. Soon, there was an answering rooster call back from Apu: a single crow, which meant, Wait, I am coming. Shibani smiled and waited.The two friends no longer saw each other as much as they used to. Both of them had two-year-olds now. Apu's daughter, Ratna, was born three days after Shibani's second son, Nitin, who was four years younger than Biren.Nitin turned out to be a colicky infant who grew into a fretful toddler. Shibani watched her nimble figure jump over backyard scrub and race around the emerald-green pond. She is still so lithe and supple, like a young sapling, Shibani thought fondly of her friend, who was a trained Bharatnatyam dancer.Apu huffed up to the fence and mopped her face with the end of her sari. Excellent Family Drama

Flame Tree Road is apparently a prequel for Teatime for the Firefly. I did not read the first book written by Shona Patel, but I am definitely adding it to my reading list after reading Flame Tree Road. I loved everything about this story: the setting, the characters and the emotional drama. I just wanted to read something other than horror, and I came away with a literary experience that's left me wanting to read more in this genre.

Taking place in 1870s India, the story follows the life of Biren Roy in a village that follows a caste system. When his mother is shunned due to her status as a widow, Biren makes a conscious decision to change the quality of women's lives in his country. He eventually moves to England, where he learns more about fighting for women's rights, but when he returns to his own country, he feels like an outsider. He is able to make a life for himself, while working towards his goal, but it comes at a high cost.

The POV is told in third person, mostly following Biren and his thoughts, but also allowing readers to see Biren through the eyes of those around him. The story often read more like a family drama than the struggles of just one individual. It was interesting to see how changes in world politics, as well as local politics, affected members of Biren's family dynamics. What I found most intriguing is the way characters facing the same challenges handled them in completely different ways, emphasizing the qualities that make Biren endearing to readers.

You don't have to have an interest in the history of India or its customs to enjoy Flame Tree Road - you need only to have a heart.

A beautifully written novel

This novel was given to me for my review.
Flame Tree Road is a novel about two things, Biren Roy and India. Biren Roy is a man who is blessed by good looks, talent and keen intelligence, but hampered by the rules and superstitions of the country he was mostly raised in. Still, his life is blessed in many ways because of his father and mother, and because he is a man. However, when his father dies, and his mother is made invisible by the cruel mandates for widows, Biren and his brother are basically orphaned. They are sent to boarding school because of the respect held for their father, and life is not all hardship for them. They both become learned men, Biren with a heart for law, and Nitin for medicine. They are successful, but Biren's dreams of establishing schools for women and getting laws changed for how women are treated have far reaching consequences that will have an effect on his family. Shona Patel's writing is by turns sparse and beautiful. India comes alive, in both its ugliness and glory. A large part of the tension within the novel is derived from the reader's knowledge that the country she describes will not allow for easy answers. I thought the novel is very well done, though parts of it are very sad. Other parts are amusing and hopeful. A very well written novel about a country that has always fascinated me.

Not a convincing novel; really just a set of dramatic set pieces

Unfortunately, this novel was never really interesting or engaging. At points, there were vivid and dramatic scenes: when young Biren Roy's father dies, throwing his future into jeopardy; when he encounters a beautiful young women whom he wishes to marry and discovers that there may be obstacles in his path; in the final climactic scenes.

But the overall story line is a very straight one. Biren Roy, from an early age, becomes aware of the injustice done to women in his community and when given the opportunity, through his own education, to do something about that, resolves to change matters. Of course, since it's the late 19th century and Britain is still India's colonial master, there are obstacles, both within Indian society and from the British, but Biren forges ahead. The novel, ultimately, is a series of experiences that Biren has throughout his life -- at a boarding school, at university in England and on his return to India; finding his first job and finally working toward his dream; falling in love and trying to build a happy family life. But that's about it -- a string of experiences, made colorful with a lot of historical and local detail, and some romance thrown in. There really is no tension or character growth in Biren -- he remains virtually unaltered from a teenager through to an old man, in his core. So it's about what happens to him -- the people and experiences that "bounce off" him. Sorry, but in a novel I need more than that: I need a character who is going to react to and be shaped by his life's experiences, not simply move on to the next one. There is emotion -- even at the melodramatic level -- but it never really felt authentic to me.

The book's final chapters, which wrap up the family saga, are rushed -- a potentially suspenseful plot element is disposed of in a few pages (trying to avoid spoilers here) with a big, unpredictable twist that is at once almost blatantly foreshadowed earlier in the book, to a degree that felt absurdly heavy handed, and at the same time that lacked any real leadup. (An event is stated, second hand, to have happened...)

Patel's first book was OK; this had the potential to be more intriguing, but, being more ambitious in scope, fell far short of the mark. I kept think instead of Sujata Massey's novel, "The Sleeping Dictionary", which dealt with issues of women's education, the struggle of India's poorest, with communal struggles, colonialism and similar topics, with a romantic subplot, albeit set in the interwar years leading up to Indian independence. That book had a main character who grew from childhood to maturity and who evolved and who was absolutely convincing throughout. This one? It felt like reading a series of more or less successful vignettes stapled together.

Atmospheric and light

Flame Tree Road was recommended to me by my husband’s grandmother, and I immediately put it on my wishlist because I was interested in reading Indian historical fiction. I was pretty excited to receive it recently as part of LibraryThing’s secret Santa book exchange.

The protagonist of Flame Tree Road is Biren, a boy from a small Indian village in the 1870s who grows up to be a Cambridge educated lawyer crusading for women’s rights in India. There isn’t really much of a plot, the book is just a series of vignettes from his life and the lives of people he knows, told from an omniscient perspective. We follow him from childhood to his eighties, although the bulk of the book takes place when he is a young man.

I enjoyed how atmospheric this book was, it really drew you into the sights, sounds, and smells of its setting. You feel like you’re actually there with the characters. However, the book took the same poetic tone towards descriptions of people, though, and I didn’t like that as much, it was a little bit too romantic for me.

Biren was a good character, but he didn’t seem to have any flaws. There are even multiple scenes from the viewpoint of people that meet him whose entire point is how impressed they are by Biren. Secondary characters are not very fleshed out – they’re only described in how they relate to Biren, and don’t seem like real people. Not every book needs to have strong characters, but since this one didn’t have much of a plot, I was hoping for some character growth or change. This especially frustrated me in regards to the events at the end of the book – given how perfect Biren seemed to be, I didn’t really buy some of the events that happened to him, they seem like they could have been preventable. And if they weren’t, there needed to be some flaw in Biren’s character to explain why he wasn’t able or willing to take action.

Overall, it was pretty light reading, and it was different from the kind of book I usually read, so I enjoyed it.

PERFECT SUMMER READ

I soak up Shona Patel's writing. She writes the kind of novel you can read in a day and a half by the pool. Her stories take you to India where you can smell the vibrant teas and flowers of the tropical forests and have a both exotic and real experiences with wonderful characters without leaving a poolside lounge chair or a comfortable overstuffed armchair.

I attended Shona Patel's book launch 2015 at The Poisoned Pen last night. Really, a group of us carpooling. We read Shona's previous book, Teatime for the Firefly, in two books clubs. Great reviews! I purchased my signed 1st edition last night. Can't wait to get started reading! The book launch was fabulous! What a great evening. I don't think I've ever been surrounded by so many lovely signed 1st editions before. What better atmosphere for a book lover? Ms. Patel gave a large group of listeners the great quote, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." Put this one on your "must read" list!

Fabulous job with all her descriptions of the scenery and historical life

Set in India and England, this was a different read for me because of the beauty of the settings. Patel did a fabulous job with all her descriptions of the scenery and historical life in that time period.

I gave this book 3 stars because of the rather abrupt ending and because the character descriptions of the two main women in the story -- the MC's mother and granddaughter seemed to be lacking. The first half of the book develops nicely and once the MC is ready for the second half of his life to unfold, everything seems to be rushed and not delved into as richly, followed by the abrupt end with no satisfactory ending for some of the characters.

The book cover, the paper quality, and the way the pages are rough at the edges is a gorgeous touch.
