for Girls Only! Devotions - a Valuable Asset for a Girl's Devotional Life

For Girls Only! Devotions written by Carolyn Larsen, illustrated by Leah Sutherland, and put out by Tyndale House and retailing for $9.99, needs to go on mom's Christmas lists if they have tween (ages 8 - 12) daughters!

As written on the back cover:

Fighting your fears!

Feeling like you don't measure up!

Dealing with gossip!

For Girls Only! Devotions talks about the issues you face.

Many devotion books tell you what the Bible says; this one does that . . . and more! It also helps you live out what the Bible says. Each devotion includes a story about a real issue, a self-quiz for you to check out how you're doing, some tips on living out the message, and quotes and Scriptures to reinforce the lesson. It's a fun way to learn more about living out your faith in real life.

First of all, the cover itself is attractive, and I would even say, engaging enough for girl's to have their interest piqued. Open it up, and you will find more than boring black and white print devotionals. Each page is written in a purple font and has artwork that only adds to the words on the page. A book like this will capture--and keep--your daughter's attention right up until the end.

Each devotional is 4 pages in length, but don't let that give the assumption it's hard reading. Instead, the writing is in a conversational tone that tween girls can relate too, on topics that hit home. Titles include, but are not limited to, "It's all about Me!", "Whatever", "Secret Sins", "Just downright Mean!" "It Hurts so Much", "Heart-Stopping Fear", "Not Good Enough", "Sucked in", "What if it's Not True?", "Let the Earth Swallow Me", "I love my Friends", "I'm Bored!", "Hero Worship", "Stressed Out!", "Make it Stop!", "Dream Big", and "On the Outside Looking In".

A verse introduces the reading, and a "Checkup Time" wraps it up. In the Checkup Time, girls can evaluate where they stand on the issue they just read about, by answering some questions based on a five point scale. A key helps them understand their heart a bit better, when they review what numbers they circled most. It doesn't stop there however. The reader is then given some suggestions on "Things to Do" to work on the area that was addressed and verses and quotes are given for them to meditate on for the remainder of the day.

As mamas, we desire to see our girls have a relationship with God, and we know that part of that starts with a daily quiet time. Whether your daughter is just now, trying to develop that daily quiet time, or has been doing it for a couple of years now, For Girls Only! Devotions will be a valuable asset to her spiritual walk.

This is just great

We are really enjoying the stories. Its great for our young girls to hear they are not alone in their day to day situations. My daughter and I are Domestic Violence survivors and this has helped bring situations to open talk time. Covers. Bullies in school, cheating on test, other great things to talk about, even divorce is a story in this book.

Down to earth devotional for girls

If you are looking for a last minute gift for a young teenage girl in your life, have you thought of a devotional book? For Girls Only! Devotions by Carolyn Larsen might just be the book your daughter needs to get her started off for the new year! s and Scriptures to reinforce the lesson. It's a fun way to learn more about living out your faith in real life.

I like this book and will be giving it to a friend's daughter who I think this will fit just perfectly with some of the things she is struggling with. This is an attractive book for a girl, from the front cover being modern, to the purple font color throughout the book (along with purple shaded pictures). Each devotional is four pages long. The first two pages include a short story along with discussing the relevant topic. The next two pages are more "hands on" with things to do and think about, including a "Checkup Time" which the girl can rate things discussed in the devotional from one to five and then you add up the numbers and suggests how to work on things. There is also a section on "Things To Do" and "Things to Remember" which give practical ways to go further . . . with things to apply personally and do along with more Scripture verses and quotes from other authors.

For Girls Only! Devotions is down to earth, "real" and may really hit some girls where they are. With over 50 devotionals, I might suggest even using this for a girls' Sunday School class, and working using the practical suggestions for the girls to work on throughout the week. It is suggested for children ages 8-12, but I believe it could go for even older girls, possibly up to age 16 depending on how old they are emotionally.

This book was provided for review by Tyndale House Publishers and this review expresses my honest opinion.

WONDERFUL FOR GIRLS AGE 10 ! GREAT GIFT IDEA

WOW ! My daughter is 10 almost 11 in 5th grade and dealing with the normal social issues that come with girls of her age. This is a great devotional book for her. It's short and sweet and still very insightful and so on point for he issues she is dealing with. This book offers practical help and understanding for thing she is going though and gives scriptures ( Gods promises ) that corilate with the issues. Wonderful book! Thank you!

This devotional was a great tool for sparking conversation with my eight-year-old

This devotional was a great tool for sparking conversation with my eight-year-old. Even the topics that didn't specifically apply to our lives stirred up good talks. I highly recommend this devotionals for mom (or significant grown-up)/daughters.

I will add that I edited some of the topics as I read them aloud. Some of the specific issues dealt with in here are sensitive (alcoholism, violence in the home, etc.). These are not a reality in my child's life, but I still found them valuable to discuss with her because they may be issues she faces with friends' lives.

I read some reviews stating that there were some daily devotionals in this book that dealt with sexuality. We have finished going through the book, and unless I missed one, I didn't find any of those. Perhaps I have a newer editions where those have been weeded out.

Great for girls!

My daughter just got this book today and she hasn't been able to put it down.

The book consists of many different stories about different girls and different situations. After every chapter there is a series of question that you must rate yourself on.

I love it for my daughter because it teaches her where she can be a better person based on her feedback she gives herself from the chapter tests.

I recommend for anyone girl within age range that is growing.

Relatable...

So far so good (we have not gone through the entire book yet) regarding the messages and scenarios presented in this book. I really like that there is more to it than just reading the bible; there are applications to what we do and say daily as well as "action items" that reinforce the lesson for each devotion. My daughter appreciates the life lessons as well.

Lessons with love

I love these devotionals. I just ordered these for my girls, who are both under 10 years old. They enjoy the activities and the stories. I love that the message is always about the love of Christ and how we can be more like him. The book is written on the kids level and has scripture throughout for reference with all of the stories. This devotional also encourages leadership and strength in the girls--it talks about bullying and how to respond in an appropriate way that is still Christ-like. If you are looking for a non-expensive way to help your kids to learn about how to create a real relationship with God by spending time learning about Him, this is a good buy for you. I even look forward to reading the stories!
