When tragedy strikes, whether personal, national, or global, people wonder how God could allow such things to happen. What can he be thinking? Is God really in control? Can we trust him to run the universe if he would allow this ? It is important to recognize that God dwells in a different realm. He occupies another dimension. "My thoughts are not like your thoughts. Your ways are not like my ways. Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts" (Isa. 55:8-9). Make special note of the word like . God's thoughts are not our thoughts, nor are they even like ours. We aren't even in the same neighborhood. We're thinking, Preserve the body ; he's thinking, Save the soul . We dream of a pay raise. He dreams of raising the dead. We avoid pain and seek peace. God uses pain to bring peace. "I'm going to live before I die," we resolve. "Die so you can live," he instructs. We love what rusts. He loves what endures. We rejoice at our successes. He rejoices at our confessions. We show our children the Nike star with the million-dollar smile and say, "Be like Mike." God points to the crucified carpenter with bloody lips and a torn side and says, "Be like Christ." Our thoughts are not like God's thoughts. Our ways are not like his ways. He has a different agenda. He dwells in a different dimension. He lives on another plane. The heavens tell the glory of God, and the skies announce what his hands have made. Day after day they tell the story; night after night they tell it again. They have no speech or words; they have no voice to be heard. But their message goes out through all the world; their words go everywhere on earth. (Ps. 19:1-4) Nature is God's workshop. The sky is his rsum. The universe is his calling card. You want to know who God is? See what he has done. You want to know his power? Take a look at his creation. Curious about his strength? Pay a visit to his home address: 1 Billion Starry Sky Avenue. Want to know his size? Step out into the night and stare at starlight emitted one million years ago, and then read 2 Chronicles 2:6: "No one can really build a house for our God. Not even the highest of heavens can hold him." He is untainted by the atmosphere of sin, unbridled by the time line of history, unhindered by the weariness of the body. What controls you doesn't control him. What troubles you doesn't trouble him. What fatigues you doesn't fatigue him. Is an eagle disturbed by traffic? No, he rises above it. Is the whale perturbed by a hurricane? Of course not; he plunges beneath it. Is the lion flustered by the mouse standing directly in his way? No, he steps over it. How much more is God able to soar above, plunge beneath, and step over the troubles of the earth! "What is impossible with man is possible with God" (see Matt. 19:26). Our questions betray our lack of understanding: How can God be everywhere at one time? (Who says God is bound by a body?) How can God hear all the prayers that come to him? (Perhaps his ears are different from yours.) How can God be the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit? (Could it be that heaven has a different set of physics than earth?) If people down here won't forgive me, how much more am I guilty before a holy God? (Oh, just the opposite. God is always able to give grace when we humans can't-he invented it.) How vital that we pray, armed with the knowledge that God is in heaven. Pray with any lesser conviction, and our prayers are timid, shallow, and hollow. Look up and see what God has done, and watch how your prayers are energized. This knowledge gives us confidence as we face the uncertain future. We know that he is in control of the universe, and so we can rest secure. But also important is the knowledge that this God in heaven has chosen to bend near toward earth to see our sorrow and hear our prayers. He is not so far above us that he is not touched by our tears. Though we may not be able to see his purpose or his plan, the Lord of heaven is on his throne and in firm control of the universe and our lives. So we entrust him with our future. We entrust him with our very lives. (Continues...) Excerpted from For these Tough Times by Max Lucado Excerpted by permission. All rights reserved. God's Eye View

I received the book, For these Tough Times, by Max Lucado a few days before Christmas. While it is a small book, and easily read in a single sitting, I was a little busy over the holidays and unable to sit down with an amount of dedicated time. I finally had the opportunity to sit down with it over the course of a few mornings and now offer my thoughts and review of the book.

If you are familiar at all with Christian literature, you will recognize the name of Max Lucado. I think he is probably among the most (if not the most) prolific writers of our day. I only make this point to say any critique or comment that I may have to offer isn't going to be in the realm of technical ability or style; the gentleman obviously understands his craft. Sharing vocations with Lucado as a pastor, I was interested to hear what insight he has to offer those in need of answers during the tough times of life. I have been on the "hard side" of the table when difficult questions have been asked, I have entered into heart-wrenching sessions of grief counseling, and I have been speechless when a grieving parent and/or spouse is asking; "Why would God let this happen?" I am always in search of wisdom that may help me in bridging these moments with others, so it was with this interest that I approached For these Tough Times.

As I mentioned, the book is a quick read, but that in no way implies it is light (shallow) reading. Lucado approaches some very "heady" theology in a way that even the most un-indoctrinated man-on-the-street can find understandable. Max doesn't shy away from the tough questions or gloss over any of the more difficult conversations that come up when discussing the nature and character of God. Let me share a few lines that I considered "quotable" highlights.

Chapter three brings attention to God, the Father. I really appreciated the emphasis that was shared in this chapter. There were a number of notable examples and illustrations that I'm sure I'll use from Lucado's explanation on the immanence and worship of God, but I especially liked this one line quote; "The more we focus up there, the more inspired we are down here."

Chapter four begins with the sixty-four million dollar question; "How could God allow evil to bring destruction and loss into our lives?" In my opinion, this chapter is worth the cost of the book alone. I won't ruin the chapter by quoting from it extensively, but I will say that it very well written and not purposed to sugarcoat truth or trivialize tragedy. I think too, that this chapter (four) fits hand-in-glove with chapter eight (From God's Perspective). This is what we most often fail to take into consideration in the midst of our pain; God's perspective.

Let me say again, I really appreciate the clarity and ease that Max Lucado writes in the context of difficult situations. There is incredibly deep thinking that enables a teacher-author to be able to share topics with this degree of difficulty and distill them down to palatable and manageable truths. The book ends with a hopeful and heart-warming prayer that gives me forward looking smile of encouragement. I'm thinking that when I find it difficult to share words with a hurting person, this book might be a nice gift for them when they need comfort and find themselves alone.

A good book to give as a gift

Everything I've read by Max Lucado has touched my heart in one way or another. He truly has a gift, and His understanding of God's love for us, His children, shines through every word. This new release -- the majority are excerpts taken from other, longer books -- is no exception to the rule.

This is a slim volume, but it's packed with wisdom and encouragement for the times in which we live. "When the jobs are lost, marriages fall apart, and loved ones die, what are we to do?" Fear, anger, and despair aren't the answer. Turning to God is. It's there in His arms that we'll find peace.

If you know someone (or if you are someone) who is struggling today, this book is the perfect one to give to them (or to yourself) as a gift. It definitely will help you reach toward heaven for hope and healing.

For These Tough Times

For These Tough Times: Reaching toward heaven for hope & healing
Max Lucado

Adapted from several of Max Lucado's other books, this pocketsize book is easy reading, but offers no easy answers. Unlike many books offered about tragedy and loss, this one doesn't offer touchy, feely easy answers.

Lucado, pastor of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, assures the reader that all people have the same questions during times of trial and pain. Making no excuses for God, the author lets the reader know that it's not possible for us to fully understand the ways of God.

Tough times aren't easy to live through, or explain, and Tough Times doesn't try to pretend otherwise.

The small size makes it easy for someone to carry, and is not intimidating. Lucado's open writing style reads like a friend's caring letter of advice. Keep a couple copies handy: One to give away. One to use during your own time of need.

Good Book

I received a copy of Max Lucado's book For these Tough Times recently. It is a very short book, but in the pages there is a great message. The message is: if we rely on God, we can get through tough times that may appear as though we can't make it through. Max Lucado uses a phrase in the book that I think sums it up: "God is for us."

Currently in the United States there are many people going through really tough times. This book is perfect for them. There are also many people in the United States that are not going through any tougher times than they were two years ago. This book is perfect for them also. In my opinion, this book can be great to pick you up in times you need just a little bit of guidance or a little bit of encouragement. This book is short and to the point. God is for us and we just need to rely on Him.

For these Tough Times is a very quick read with a very powerful message. This book is definitely worth the small amount of time it takes to read it and I definitely recommend it.

Good guidance for hard times

In For These Tough Times Max Lucado attempts to provide encouragement and guidance to people who are experiencing tough times in life such as grief.

The book is quite a short one at only 81 small pages with decent sized print. This is probably a good thing because I know when i've been suffering I haven't wanted to wade through dense books. He writes in a beautiful and often moving but easy to read style.

Despite being so so short, the book doesn't lack in substance. Unlike many Christian explanations of suffering that falsely ether reject that God is truly good or that God is truly in control Max clearly presents both as true. I particularly appreciated him explaining how the cross demonstrates that God really does love us rather than just explaining the love of God abstract terms. He also encourages readers to keep praying because God is listen and explains some of the ways that God can bring good out of what seems to us like horrible events. I'm not entirely sure if I agree with what he said about the limitations on the devil but other than that I didn't have any significant theological concerns about the content.

If you are suffering right now, I encourage you to read this book because I think you will find it helpful. Even if you are not suffering right now, I still think it is worthwhile to read it as it reminds us of some important truths about God.

So Simple So True

This was my first Max Lucado book. Max Lucado's introduction begins with "When all that is good falls apart, what can good people do?" from Psalm 11:3. Have you asked yourself this question. Even in a different way? I have, and I had been when I began to read this book. Sometimes situations call for a certain kind of read. Nowadays there seems to be more reasons and situations to call out to God. The beauty of this book is that it can truly give the reader a new perspective on God the father. Because of who we are and where our reality lies, it is hard to see the big picture. It is especially hard to see the "God" picture. There are reasons why we go through the things we go through, and try as we might, we are not going to see through God's glasses. Lucado gives us a glimpse into that vision with scripture and real life examples that will speak to the reader in a way that is clear and reassuring. It is brief at just eight chapters and roughly 83 pages, and yet, this book has so much to say that can ease the heavy heart.

What spoke to me most was chapter 2, God's Great Love. Lucado describes a drive with his daughter when she was a small child and how he became overwhelmed with his love for her. He expressed that love to her and she looked at him quizzically. This he compares to God's love for us and our understanding of it. I am a parent and I can grasp the concept of loving your child so deeply that you would literally die for them. It is our understanding of that love that is like a child. We may not get it, but that doesn't change His love. There are many other messages in this book worth reading. Another that was clear to me was to give up the revenge business or even the hope for revenge. We have all been hurt and we all have the right to be avenged, but the focus on that pain and need for retribution does not allow us to heal.

I would really recommend this book to anyone whether facing a hard time or not.
