Features & Highlights

  • Mark Helprin’s legions of devoted readers cherish his timeless novels and short stories, which are uplifting in their conviction of the goodness and resilience of the human spirit.
  • Freddy and Fredericka
  • —a brilliantly refashioned fairy tale and a magnificently funny farce—only seems like a radical departure of form, for behind the laughter, Helprin speaks of leaps of faith and second chances, courage and the primacy of love. Helprin’s latest work, an extraordinarily funny allegory about a most peculiar British royal family, is immensely mocking of contemporary monarchy and yet deeply sympathetic to the individuals caught in its lonely absurdities.

A Lovely Work by a Modern Master

I already own this book, but bought more copies to give as gifts because I love sharing Helprin's work. A caution: The tone might seem kind of weird at first if you have expectations for what a "Helprin novel" entails, but once you get into the rhythm, in the ways that count this is vintage Helprin -- lovely rich prose, wonderfully improbable plotting, unique characters, with humor that doesn't sacrifice depth of feeling. (Also highly recommended: MEMOIR FROM ANT-PROOF CASE.)

Halprin has a great sense of humor

I have read a number of Halprin's books, both short and long stories. This was the first one I recall that is humorous. Halprin's prose, creativity and sense of imagination, and not so subtle humor are great and makes this a fun read.
