Description

"Somewhere the ghosts of Shirley Jackson and the Henry James of The Turn of the Screw are smiling, because a wildly talented young writer has joined their lineage. What a taut, keenly intelligent, and provocative debut Goodnight Stranger is. Deeply compelling and enjoyable, suffused with a genuinely thrilling new mode of literary energy."-George Saunders, #1 New York Times Bestselling author of Lincoln in the Bardo"The emotional reactions of Gault's winning cast of characters lend her ghost story – with its family secrets and unexpected violence – a rare psychological depth." – BBC.com"Quietly chilling...A suspenseful meditation on the many ways in which the past, consciously or not, shapes the present, the novel flirts with fantasy but ultimately stays grounded in the elemental realities of wind, tides, and the eroding foundations of memory." - Booklist"One of the best literary thrillers you'll read this year, I was hooked from page one. As in, I started this book and didn't put it down until I had finished. In the interest of not spoiling the plot, all you need to know is that a woman's life is rocked when a man comes to town claiming to be her long-dead brother. Obviously, nothing! Is! As! It! Seems!" – Cosmopolitan"Miciah Bay Gault is one of the most naturally talented writers I've ever read, and Goodnight Stranger is a testament to the capacious scope of her talent. This book has the exceptionally rare quality of being at once lyrical and a page-turner, finely-wrought and hot with speed. I'd say it reminds me of Karen Russell, Donna Tartt, Gillian Flynn and Marilynne Robinson all once, but all it really reminds me of its own remarkable self. This is a monster debut."- Daniel Torday, acclaimed author of The Last Flight of Poxl West and Boomer1"I couldn't put this book down. Miciah Bay Gault casts a spell with every sentence she writes, and in Goodnight Stranger, that vivid, mysterious and haunting spell just keeps unfurling. Lydia, her brother, and the island itself pulled me into their web-a land of saltwater, secrets, isolation and desire-and didn't let go, not until long after I'd turned the last page."- Robin MacArthur, author of Heart Spring Mountain"Miciah Gault has written a perfect novel. It has a story as propulsive as a thriller, characters rich and vivid enough that I will be haunted by them for years, and prose so immaculate that every sentence gleams. Goodnight Stranger captivated me from its first page to its last. Here is a debut that instantly places its author in the realm of Donna Tartt and Celeste Ng-books you can't put down that are true works of art." - Melissa Febos, author of Whip Smart and Abandon Me"Goodnight Stranger is an uncanny, propulsive novel in which even the most stable-seeming ground moves and shifts like water does. I read with my heart in my throat." – Clare Beams, author of We Show What We Have Learned"Stunning debut...deft and sly."-Julianna Baggott, author of Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders"Goodnight Stranger unfolds close to the bone, deep in the gut, right on the edge of every nerve. It seeps into you, takes you over with its dark suspense and its oh so relatable concerns. Bravo to Miciah Bay Gault on a brilliant look at loss, at family, at identity, and at all the many loves we feel." - Robin Black, author of Life Drawing Miciah Bay Gault grew up on Sanibel Island, Cape Cod, and other beautiful places. • Lydia and Lucas Moore are in their late twenties when a stranger enters their small world on Wolf Island. Lydia, the responsible sister, has cared for her pathologically shy brother, Lucas, ever since their mom’s death a decade before. They live together, comfortable yet confined, in their family house by the sea, shadowed by events from their childhood. When Lydia sees the stranger step off the ferry, she feels an immediate connection to him. Lucas is convinced the man, Cole Anthony, is the reincarnation of their baby brother, who died when they were young. Cole knows their mannerisms, their home, the topography of the island—what else could that mean? Though Lydia is doubtful, she can’t deny she is drawn to his magnetism, his energy, and his warmth. To discover the truth about Cole, Lydia must finally face her anxiety about leaving the island and summon the strength to challenge Cole’s grip on her family’s past and her brother. Unique storyline and beautifully written

Goodnight Stranger. I absolutely loved this book! I couldn't put it down so it was read in a couple of days. The story is told by Lydia. She is likable and honest. She is someone you'd want to be friends with. As she shares her story (and mystery!) with you, you are transported along beside her. Why?

Because Miciah Bay Gault is an extraordinary writer. Her prose is often lyrical. There are hundreds of passages that I read and reread several times because they were just lovely to imagine. Lydia says: "I felt an electric sensation coursing through me, as if I'd swallowed ocean water bright with bioluminescence. I could feel those water-stars gliding up and down the avenues of my body." Or about her brother: "Lucas was grinning. He looked like he might take off flying, unfold surprise wings and lift into the darkness". Or about the stranger: "Memories were of special interest to him. He collected them, studied them ... as if memories could make a man rich." Wow! This book will have you wanting more from this author. Miciah, I can hardly wait for the next one!

Ghosts in many forms

This thriller poetically explores the possibility of ghosts - both apart and within us. Good Night Stranger navigates the choppy waters of the ocean, gaslighting, family trauma, mental health, lust vs love, and the Haunting of the Things Missed When you are Tied to one Place your Whole Life, even when it's the place you love most.

Miciah Bay Gault’s Goodnight Stranger is a fantastic read. I literally could not put it down, reading way past my bedtime into the night. It is elegant, thrilling, and mysterious with Twists and turns, an incredible narrative voice. Such a satisfying read. You will not regret picking this book up, putting up a “do not disturb” sign for your family, and emerging days later!

Not Quite

I'm a fan of Shirley Jackson so when her name was referenced in a review of this book I went in really wanting to like it. The storyline isn't believable, and most of the characters never really evolve or develop with the exception of Tuck. I have a fundamental problem with Lydia and just in case will say it could be a "spoiler alert". She believed to some degree throughout the story that Cole could be her brother, and at one point was convinced he was. Yet at no time did she ever find anything wrong with her intimate behavior with him. No remorse or thoughts about that? Also, she always spoke of her mother being sick and we do know how she died. Maybe I missed it, but how her father die? If it was mentioned it was brief. It was as though he was the one that didn't exist.
I thought the imagery of her thoughts throughout were very good, and if given time and more work maybe the story could have also been very good.
I was glad this was a library book.

beautifully written page-turner

This engaging and novel was full of surprises and kept me up all night reading. I loved the sense of a haunted world the author created. This is also a quietly feminist novel—by which I mean that in the process of unfolding a thrilling mystery it also charts the development of a young woman’s powerful consciousness of desire.
