Description

Mariah Stewart is the award-winning New York Times bestselling author of twenty-nine novels of contemporary romance and romantic suspense. A native of Hightstown, New Jersey, she lives with her husband and their dogs amid the rolling hills and Amish farms of southern Chester County, Pennsylvania, where she gardens, reads, and enjoys country life. She is currently working on the next book in her bestselling Chesapeake Diaries series. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Chapter 1At the moment the moon began its descent and the sun started to rise, the back door of the old farmhouse opened and a petite woman with a long strawberry-xadblond ponytail stepped out onto the porch. Brooke Madison Bowers hesitated for a moment before walking on bare feet through the cool dew-xadcovered grass that was a week overdue for a mowing. When she reached the small fence-xadenclosed garden, she pushed aside the squeaky gate and headed for the stone bench, where she sat alone in the soft shadows and the hush of the new day until the dawn began to break in earnest. The backs of her thighs drew the chill from the damp stone despite the sweatpants she wore, and she shifted uncomfortably. She pulled up her legs and wrapped her arms around them and wished she’d grabbed a jacket on her way through the kitchen. Shoes would have been nice, too. Goose bumps rose on her arms under her sweatshirt, and she thought it would be especially nice if the sun, just now nudging over the smallest of the three barns, would move just a little faster.Light silently fanned out across fields she’d played in once upon a time. The memory of chasing their dogs through the rows of corn was so fresh, so real, she had to stop and mentally tally just how many years it had been since she’d been a child. That many? Really? The dogs were long gone, and her life had taken many an unexpected road since they’d romped together. It was hard to believe that the onetime Miss Blue Claw and Miss Eastern Shore—xadthe golden girl, the beauty queen, the girl most likely to succeed—xadwas once again living on her family farm, sleeping under the familiar red roof with her mother down the hall to the left in the room she’d shared with Brooke’s father for forty-xadtwo years, and her brother two doors down to the right. Déjà vu all over again. Except that it wasn’t.For one thing, her father had passed away two years ago. For another, the room next to Brooke now belonged to her son. The biggest change of all was that the once happy-xadgo-xadlucky girl was now a not-xadso-xadmerry widow.“Brooke? You out there?” her brother called to her as he crossed the yard. She’d been so lost in thought she’d heard neither the back door nor his footsteps.“Here, Clay. In the herb garden.”He pushed through the gate, telling her, “I’ve got coffee.”“You’re a good brother.”“The best.” He handed her a mug of coffee and took a seat next to her on the bench.“Thanks.”“Sure.” Clay stretched his long legs out in front of him and took a deep breath. “Everything okay? How are your finances holding up?”“Fine. Between Eric’s benefits and the life insurance and some investments, I’m fine.”“You know if you needed anything . . .”“I do know. And I thank you.”“You’re welcome.”“Beautiful sunrise,” she observed, mostly to change the subject.“Nothing like early morning. Watching the light spread across the orchard like that . . . I never get tired of it.” He raised his mug in a sort of salute in the direction of the apple trees that formed the property line beyond the garden.“Old Clay Madison had a farm,” she sang under her breath. “Do I have to add the ‘E-xadI, E-xadI-xadO’?”Clay laughed. “Hey, it’s all old Clay Madison ever really wanted.” After a pause, he asked, “What about you, Brooke? What do you want?”“Today?” She sighed. “I just want to get through today without going off the deep end. I keep going back and forth between feeling just plain sad and just plain pissed off.”“Please accept my apologies in advance for being an insensitive ass, but what’s today? Other than Logan’s birthday.”“That’s it. Logan’s eight years old today.”“And that makes you sad and angry?”“Because Eric isn’t here for it, and he’ll never be here for any of Logan’s birthdays.” She paused. “Actually, Eric hasn’t been around for any of his birthdays. He was in Iraq for the first four, and these past few years, he’s been gone.”“Damn,” he said softly. “Has it been three years?”“Two and a half since my husband was blown up in Iraq and my life blew up in my face.” She cleared her throat and tried to keep her voice from quivering. She glanced at her brother and could tell he was struggling to find something—xadthe right something—xadto say.“It’s okay,” she assured him. “I mean, what do you say? ‘I’m sorry Eric didn’t live to see his son grow up and I’m still sorry that he died’?”“I am still sorry that Eric died. He was a hell of a guy.”She turned her back on him and rested against his shoulder.“Did I say the wrong thing?”“No, you said exactly the right thing. I just want to lean,” she said. “ u2009’Member when we were kids and we sat out here at night and tried to count the stars?”“Yeah. I think the most I ever counted was a hundred and fifty-xadthree before I gave up.” He turned and faced the opposite direction so that she could rest her back squarely against his. “Better?”“Much. Thanks.”They sat in silence and drank their coffee while the day unfolded around them.“I guess I should go in and see if Logan—xad”“Brooke, I know how hard the past few years have been for you. I know it’s still hard. But . . .” Clay hesitated, as if not sure he wanted to continue.“But . . . ?” She waited.“But maybe . . . well, maybe it might be time to try to start to rebuild your life.”“I am rebuilding my life. By December, I’ll have my degree and I’m starting my own business. I’d call that rebuilding.”He nodded. “It is. You are. Of course you are. And I’m really proud of you for doing all those things. A lot of people wouldn’t have bothered to take those last courses for their B.S., and I know you’ve put a lot of time into starting up this business of yours, but . . .”“But . . . ?” She swung her legs around and plunked her bare feet on the ground. Her toes curled up against the cold.“But maybe it’s time for you to, you know, get out a little more.”“I get out. I get out plenty. Last night I went with Dallas to look for her wedding dress. Tomorrow night I’m going over to Vanessa’s to help get things ready for the engagement party she’s hosting this weekend for Steffie and Wade.”“That’s not exactly what I meant. I meant, like, with a guy.”“You mean dating?” She frowned. “I’ve gone on dates. I’ve gone on lots of dates.”“You’ve gone on lots of first dates.”“What’s your point?” Brooke loved her brother but knew where he was heading and she didn’t really want to go there.“My point is that sooner or later you’re going to run out of guys to have first dates with.” His voice was gentle, and she gave him points for the effort. “I’m just a little concerned that you never seem to give anyone a real chance.”She stared at him.“What’s that supposed to mean?”“It means that you flirt with a guy, you go out with him, then . . . nothing. I mean, every guy on the Eastern Shore can’t be a dud. There are a lot of nice guys in town.”“I know.” Mentally she took back the points she’d just given him. “I’ve gone out with several nice guys.”“Once. You go out with them once, then find a reason to never go out with the same guy again.”“No chemistry.”“I think the truth is that you don’t want there to be any chemistry. You like the company, you like the attention, and I know you well enough to know that you like getting dressed up and looking gorgeous and going out. But the bottom line? You don’t really want a relationship with anyone.” He took her hand. “You’re too young to give up, toots. You’re beautiful and fun and you deserve to have a beautiful, fun life with someone who adores you.”“I had that.” She pulled her hand away. “Now I don’t. End of story.”“Doesn’t mean that it’s the end of your story.”“Yes, it does. You get one soul mate, Clay. I had mine.” Her eyes filled with tears. “I loved Eric so much. We had the best plans for the best life you could possibly imagine. We were going to have more kids, he was going to go back into the business he started with his brother, we were . . .” She swallowed back the lump in her throat. “We were going to grow old together. Raise our kids and spoil our grandkids. Buy a boat and travel the Intercoastal Waterway, then retire on a beach somewhere. Then bam! Gone.”

A story set in small town USA where all dreams come true (its like a modern day fairy tale)

This novel is very light - all troubling incidents like infidelity, death of a spouse and family quarrels happen before the start of the book - there is no actual conflict in the story itself. Everyone is very understanding and all issues that come up are resolved before the end of the book. This is part of a series so there are references to incidents in the past and hints of puzzles that are to be sorted out in the future (Lucy's situation in particular) which will no doubt be the focus of other books. This is the first time I have read a book by this author and it was not a satisfying experience. Even as a romance novel is was lacking as the main protagonists had very few issues in the path to reaching "true love". Having said that the writer creates a town where everyone know each other and their history. It creates very reassuring atmosphere to set the story and it is very reminiscent of small town USA.

An Easy Read for the Beach or a Rainy Day

Mariah Stewart's latest installment in The Chesapeake Diaries series is one of those quiet romances where nothing much exciting happens. This isn't necessarily bad: Our heroine, Brooke, was widowed when her husband is killed while deployed to Iraq and now, three years later, she is finally getting her life back on track, and the reader gets the sense that the climactic event has already happened and this is where Brooke is picking up the pieces. Brooke has moved home to St. Dennis, gone back to school to finish a business degree, is finally overcoming her deserved reputation as the town's mean girl, and is planning to open a business selling cupcakes. She isn't looking for love, just trying to build a life for herself and her eight year-old son, Logan. She's helped along the way by her new best friends, the women in the previous books in this series: Vanessa, Dallas, and Steffie.

Jesse Enright sees the beautiful Brooke, recognizes her strength and integrity, and immediately knows she could very possibly be the woman for him. There's just one huge problem: Jesse is the son of Craig Enright, the former heir to the Enright & Enright law firm, an all-around screw up who was disbarred for embezzlement and who managed to father five children he didn't bother to raise. Jesse comes to town to try to build a relationship with his paternal grandfather only to discover that he has to live down his father's choices and earn his place in the family firm during a year-long probation period. Eight months in, he's wondering if he made the right choice and if the constant judgement is worth it when along comes Brooke and the promise of a future in which he might have a family of his own and permanent roots.

Just as Brooke and Jesse tentatively agree to pursue a relationship, they find themselves haunted by doubts: Is Brooke capable of loving again after having known, and lost, the powerful love she shared with Eric? Is Jesse capable of truly falling in love, or is he doomed to follow in his father's footsteps? Things get further complicated when Eric Bowers' younger brother Jason arrives in St. Dennis and accuses Brooke of dishonoring his brother's memory by not mourning Eric long enough. Will Brooke and Jesse's relationship be able to survive the snarl of family politics and personal doubts? This is a romance, so of course the answer is yes, but it's still interesting to see how it all plays out.

I do wish there had been a greater exploration of Brooke's bad girl past as the town's mean girl. This character never offers an explanation for why she changed, only that she feels really bad about it and wants to atone to the people she hurt with her actions. Jesse is a little shallow as a character as well, and **spoiler alert** he never really says the "L" word.

As another precaution for potential readers of this book: The conflicts within the story are nothing extreme, given the number of subplots introduced for future novels in this series, this book feels more like a chapter within a greater story. I like this series and started reading it from the beginning, so I don't mind this, but potential readers should be aware that most characters in this book have featured prominently in previous texts and this book is not standalone.

Hometown Girl

Hometown Girl by Mariah Stewart is a romantic suspense. I've read most of Mariah's books & haven't been disappointed yet. I know when I buy one of her books that I will have suspense, romance & not explicit sex scenes. Her writing just gets better with each book. If you haven't tried any of her books then I highly recommend her books for a good read, relationships about true people, emotions, and always a dose of suspense.

Always enjoy visiting St Dennis

I just love the small town books and Mariah Stewart has a way of making me feel a part of St Dennis. I enjoyed reading Brooke and Jesse's story. I liked them both very much. I also loved reading about how Jesse went about healing the relationship with his Grandfater Curtis. When I finish Ms. Stewarts' books I immediately go to her website to see when the next one will come out. I just can't get enough. Summer 2012 seems too long to wait right now.

I wanna go to St. Denis!

Summers over. Officially. It saddens me. It truly does. But with the end of summer, comes some great new books, one of which is Mariah Stewart's latest release, #4 in her Chesapeake Diaries series, Hometown Girl. After reading the first 3, I knew I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. With this one, Mariah brings all her great Chesapeake characters along with the cozy feel of Fall and Halloween.

Brooke Bowers, former St.Denis prom queen,is back home after the death of her husband, who was killed in Iraq. She and her son Logan are living with her mother and brother. She's vowed that she only has one soul mate and he died in Iraq while fighting for his family and country. Determined to make it on her own with her son, she opens her bakery and doesn't date anyone past the first date.

Then comes Jesse. Jesse moves back to St. Denis to accept a position in his family's law firm. He's out to prove his worth and that he's nothing like his father. He certainly can't deny the attraction he feels for hometown girl Brooke, yet she won't allow herself to love him, or any one else, again. But, Jessie has grown to love her son Logan, and her. Will he be able to prove to his family, and the hometown girl, that he's not his father and he is worthy?

I'll stop there with that little teaser. I will tell you this: it's a one day read! It's THAT good! I love the way Mariah makes her readers the heart of the story. She grips you and sends you straight to the center of St. Denis, and each character becomes a part of you, becomes your family. When you close the cover of this GREATASTICALLY FANTABULOUS( I have fun creating fun words for awesome books!)5 Book worthy novel, you'll reflect on life, you'll reflect on the wonderful characters, and more importantly, you'll reflect and try to guess when the next installment of this phenomenal series will release! Hmmmm...I think a Christmas one would be absolutely PERFECT! Well done, Mariah!

Another winner!

Once again, Mariah Stewart takes the reader to feel good places from one page to the next. Her characters jump off of the page and make you imagine you are right there with them. I have read all of Mariah's books, this being the magic number "30," and her ability to weave characters in and out of previous titles never ceases to amaze me. You will enjoy every word of Hometown Girl, and if you have not read her previous books, you will surely want to do so. Cannot wait for #31!

Great Read

I love the characters in Mariahs books. I got this book on my Kindle (I always pre-order her books) the day it came out and read the whole thing that night. Mariah always brings her characters to life and I love the fact that it involves the community and the stories from past books are not forgotten and you get a glimps of what is happening in their lifes. In this book Brooke and Jesse both have issues in their past that they have to deal with to move forward in their lives and within the community. I would recommend this book as well as all her other books.

Howntown Girl: The Chesapeake Diaries

This is the fourth book in the series. As with Mariah Stewart's other books, this is also a great book. If you are going to read them in order but can be read in any order or just of the book.
