Description

Praise for Honor “Rich and wide as the Euphrates river along whose banks it begins and ends, Elif Shafak has woven with masterful care and compassion one immigrant family's heartbreaking story - a story nurtured in the terrible silences between men and women trying to grow within ancient ways, all the while growing past them. I loved this book.” —Sarah Blake, author of The Postmistress “Fascinating and gripping…a wonderful novel.” —Rosamund Lupton, author of Sister “A powerful book; thoughtful, provoking, and compassionate.” —Joanne Harris, author of Chocolat “Calls to mind The Color Purple in its fierceness of its engagement with male violence and its determination to see its characters to a better place. But Shafak is closer to Isabel Allende in spirit, confidence, and charm. Her portrayal of Muslim cultures, both traditional and globalizing, is as hopeful as it is politically sophisticated.” —The Guardian “Shafak is an unflinching writer…this is vivid storytelling…a gripping exploration of the darkest aspects of faith and love.” —The Telegraph “This is an extraordinarily skillfully crafted and ambitious narrative, with Shakespearian twists and turns, omens and enigmas, prophecies and destinies fulfilled …Shafak joins writers such as Hanif Kureishi, Zadie Smith, Monica Ali…who offer us fictional glimpses of London’s Others.” —The Independent “[A] stunning novel…exotic, evocative and utterly gripping.” —The Times Elif Shafak is an award-winning British-Turkish novelist and a champion of women’s rights and freedom of expression. Her books have been translated into fifty-five languages. I often feel books lull about 3/4-4/5 of the way through but I LOVED it through the end

This was my second Elif Shafak novel and it will NOT be my last. I often feel books lull about 3/4-4/5 of the way through but I LOVED it through the end. The book is written from the perscpective of many characters so you are really immersed in the story overall. Amazing read.

There's More Here Than You Think

I thought I would hate this book because of the honor killing theme, but I found myself drawn to the characters and how they coped with all the challenges being thrown their way. The surprise substitution enhanced the novel a lot. Ms. Shafak writes like a wonderful dream.

Excellent Read

I had to read this for one of my college classes, but it's now one of my favorite books. It's a compelling story that intertwines the lives of a large family from a culture I do not know much about. It's intriguing, well written, and I definitely suggest it to anyone and everyone.

interesting

I enjoyed reading a novel from the point of view of another culture, and her storytelling capabilities are strong. I did object to the countless anachronisms, though, in terms of language. In 1978 London, no one said things were "cheesy" or that they were "outta there". That's language from 1990's America. Since England is not the author's country or culture, I felt an editor should really have caught these mistakes. It made it difficult to suspend disbelief sometimes. Also there is a seven year old boy who speaks and behaves like a teenager throughout, even borrowing his grown brother's clothes. Still, a thoughtful read and there was much to be moved by. One particular chapter, about an older sister who takes a wrong step and her family's response to it, is harrowing and haunting.

Emocionante y tal vez algo triste.

Es la primera novela que leo de esta autora y me gustó. Al principio cuesta meterse en la trama, pero después se pone muy interesante.

Excellent read

Beautifully written. A paean to Beirut. Written in present tense, but many long, very affecting flashbacks to the Lebanon's Civil War.Timeless story of women's' ability to persevere under any circumstance.
