Description

From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 2—A new cast of brightly colored dinosaurs appears in this charming back-to-school story. The text's easy rhyme and rhythm will be familiar to those who have read other books in this series, and Teague's charismatic and naughty dinosaurs will continue to delight readers with their antics and exuberance. The illustration accompanying "DOES A DINOSAUR YELL?" is sure to elicit smiles as an excited Herrerasaurus leaps out of his chair proudly holding up a newly lost tooth. His teacher looks annoyed, but his classmates all turn toward him with their own gap-toothed grins. The 10 dinosaurs that appear are identified on the endpapers where each is hard at work or play. Stygimoloch using one arm to prop up his raised hand as he blurts out is also likely to draw a smile from veteran teachers. A fun read-aloud for the first day of school.— Neala Arnold, St. Francis Elementary School, MN Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From Booklist This eighth entry (counting the two board books) in the Yolen/Teague How Do Dinosaurs series features a cast of 10 brightly colored dinosaurs that manage to dominate the double-page spreads without overwhelming them. Questions arise when the dinos are put in common school-day situations. Would dinosaurs walk to school or carpool? Would they stomp and make a fuss on the bus? Would they roughhouse and punch and disrupt the class by yelling or fidgeting with their tails in the air? Of course not. Before they leap out the door at the end of the school day, readers will realize that these dinosaurs are helpful, tidy, and protective, "growling at the bullies till the bullying ends." Yolen's short, rhyming text and Teague's irresistible, cavorting dinosaurs perfectly convey how dinosaurs could behave in school, large and powerful though they may be. Fans of the other titles in the series will welcome this new lesson on how to behave properly yet manage to remain a true dinosaur. Randall Enos Copyright © American Library Association. A little more negative than most of this series

My 18 month old son loves this book. I'm not sure why, except that it has school buses in it. It doesn't seem like he would relate to most of it. And it seems that a school-aged kid who is old enough to need or understand the lessons about sitting still in class, not interrupting, not pushing on the playground, etc. isn't going to be fooled by putting that advice into a story.

Also, in contrast to the other books in the series, which are more balanced in what not to do and what you should do instead, this one is 90% negative. I'm not sure I will read it to my little boy as much as the others (if he will let me get away with that), because not only does it keep on with negative after negative, it is talking about SCHOOL in a negative way. It makes it seem as though school is a place where you can't do all sorts of things and there are only limited things you CAN do. I'm not sure why the book turned out this way, if there were too many good ideas for rhyming things you shouldn't do, or not enough of the right words to make more shoulds at the end.

In spite of all this, the illustrations are great and the rhyming is clever, as always. I'm not sure what "chalk talk" in the classroom is, but hopefully that is something the kids will know. Cute book - kids always love books about school. And I think my son probably likes this one because he loves the others in the series so much!

Teaches a nice lesson

This delightful read-along shows not so much how a dinosaur goes to school, but what it does when it gets there. Does it fidget in class? Roar out of turn? Disrupt the class? No! It raises its hand, helps its classmates and tidies up its desk! With fun, detailed illustrations that cover each page spread, this book is fun to look at as well as read, just like all the earlier titles.

don't like it as much

I like the go to bed one much better. My 2.5yo toddler doesn't get the go to bed book yet, she still asks me why every page the dinosaurs look different haha but she just loves that book I'm not even sure exactly what's captivating her so much that she must read it once at bed time every night. And she actually tucks herself in now because of the book. But this school one just not very good, it's confusing as the pictures and text don't match and while the go to bed book hits all the right points (slam tail and pout, throw teddy bear all about, demands another story read, swing neck from side to side, fall on top of covers and cry) I don't feel that the go to school book hits all the right points plus the English wording is just plain odd....that said I think it's only fair that I add that my toddler still like this one just not as much!

this book is awesome

My three years old was starting preschool, so I wanted a book on behaving in school, sharing and being loving with your classmates. This book is great on these topics.

Asperger's

My son has Asperger's and has been main streamed. This book not only has dinosaurs (fabulously illustrated), but it is written in simple language that let's children know what actions are socially acceptable and unacceptable in a classroom setting! Thanks for another GREAT How Do Dinosaurs book!!!

enjoyable reading material

My three year old son has a collection of these books. He is so into dinosaurs, and reading about them and how they do everyday activities. My son enjoys the artwork, and I really like seeing the name of the dinosaurs written around them. That is a creative thought.

Not bad

Great illustrations. What I don't like about this and most of the 'How Do Dinosaurs...' series is the fact that there is not enough writing. You get through each page so quickly that you don't spend enough time looking at the illustrations because you're constantly flipping the pages. Of course, waiting to turn the page while you look at the pictures ruins the continuity of the story. I bought a paperback version of one of the books and it had 3-4 verses on each page, which was much nicer.

That said, my kids do like the books. They love dinos and the pictures are fantastic.

Grandmother

My grandson is a 3 1/2 yr old special needs child. He LOVES his Dinosaurs books. He has his mom and dad read at least one of the books to him every night. I have purchased 6 or 8 books to begin his collection. The lessons given through the dinosaurs point of view are so easily understood. There are many children who learn differently. By reading these books over and over with my grandson Gabriel, he has become more aware of others and their feelings at a time when he was unable to comprehend "others feelings" due to his sensory issues. Thank You for writing these Dinosaur Books. I will continue to purchase the books for my grandson as I know there are others geared for children a little older than he is now. Great visuals, mediocre writing

My two-and-half-year-old daughter loves these "How-To" dinosaur books. How Do Dinosaurs Go To School? was the first one I got for her, which she was hooked on and triggered me to buy the other three in the series (big format ones). The book is very educational and she can memorize and articulate all the 10 dinosaurs names provided in the book. However, while the illustrations are highly entertaining to a toddler, the language, like that in the other books in the series, is quite lackluster. It would be ideal if the book also shed literary value and were enjoyable to read aloud to a child as well.
