Meira just wants her people to be safe. When Cordellan debt forces the Winterians to dig their mines for payment, they unearth something powerful and possibly dangerous: Primoria’s lost chasm of magic. The last time the world had access to so much magic, it spawned the Decay. So when the king of Cordell orders Meira and Theron on a mission to discover the chasm’s secrets, Meira plans to use the trip to garner support to keep the chasm shut and Winter safe—even if it means clashing with Theron. But can she do so without endangering the people she loves? Mather just wants to be free. The horrors inflicted on the Winterians hang fresh and raw in Jannuari—leaving Winter vulnerable to Cordell’s growing oppression. So when Meira leaves to search for allies, Mather decides to take Winter’s security into his own hands. Can he rebuild his broken kingdom and protect his people from new threats? As the web of power and deception is woven tighter, Theron fights for magic, Mather fights for freedom—and Meira starts to wonder if she should be fighting not just for Winter but for the world. Sara Raasch has known she was destined for bookish things since the age of five, when her friends had a lemonade stand and she tagged along to sell her hand-drawn picture books too. Not much has changed since then: her friends still cock concerned eyebrows when she attempts to draw things, and her enthusiasm for the written word still drives her to extreme measures. She is the New York Times bestselling author of the Snow Like Ashes series, These Rebel Waves, and These Divided Shores . My head is spinning from this book!

I want to remind everyone I gave the first book of this trilogy a 5 star review. So I’m kinda sad that this also isn’t one. But please don’t sleep on this book or series still because it’s a wild ride. I have such high hopes for the finale still.

Okay so... I’m so conflicted. Like I can’t even explain how much Of a headache I have. This book has me dizzy in the wildest way.

I kid you not.... I was bored out.of.my.mind. For 75% of this book. I kid you not.... the 300+ pages of buildup had me wanting to smack my head off a wall.

But at the same time... it was necessary and so worth it. The plot twists that take place in this book I swear I never saw coming. There wasn’t even a hint of them happening. There’s so much damn betrayal and scandal and evil in this storyline. Like I’m legit so hungover from it. This book is for sure going to be going out with a bang.

I do wish the excitement happened a little sooner. It’s a bit ridiculous to have to wait until 75% of the way through to be entertained or hooked into the story. I feel like the first 2/3rds of this book could have been handled differently. Instead it’s spent on boring ass politics and introducing new characters. Which okay whatever, both were important.

But did meiras little adventure to learn about the other kingdoms really have to drag so painfully? Maybe it’s just me but the writing just wasn’t it for this portion of the book. I just wanted it to end, because for a while reading it caused me physical pain lmao.

But holy hell the end of this book. It was perfection. It felt like the same style and same characters from the first book again... only better this time. It was PERFECT.

And now that we’ve gotten to this point.... I should say that despite everything I just said. The real thing that kept this from getting 4 stars is in fact the characters.

Omg they were all such useless miserable saps for that first 75%. And meira? Oh lord I wanted to slap her into oblivion. Her character development plummeted so hard for a moment. I get the feelings the book wanted to evoke. Hopelessness, defeat, fear.... but it just came off as meira being a raging bitch and lashing out over nothing 90% of the time.

Theron takes a complete character 180... which there are reasons. So I get that. But it bothered me so much lol.

Mather? Prob my favorite forever. Him and his little group of friends he makes. People say he’s whiny and ungrateful but... nah he has the most real and valid, and honest feelings in the book. He’s the only one with common sense for the first third lol.

I’m sad the direction sir has taken, but I’m sure he’ll be back to the character I love soon enough.

Omg the twists and turns! I can’t wait to get to the next one. Will keep reading for sure.
