Description

From School Library Journal The chapters of this richly illustrated book touch on everything from media, materials, and techniques to design and typography, but the information given is not enough to actually teach the subject. Instead, the author gives readers a brief but interesting overview. For instance, in the chapter entitled "Character Development," Salisbury discusses mannerisms, facial expressions, and child-friendliness of characters, but doesn't tell readers how to actually create these effects on their own. However, this book does a very good job of addressing the many elements of illustration for someone who is unfamiliar with the process. Topics such as "What to illustrate," "Dynamics of composition and layout," and "Type as image" give a more concrete concept of the profession and artistry. The featured artwork is all pulled from children's picture books to demonstrate the concepts in the related text. Some are spot illustrations, a character or scene cut from its background, while others are spreads reduced to fit within the page with accompanying text. Colorful and lively, the illustrative material is indispensable to the content. A fine choice for adults interested in illustration, or as a resource for someone new to discussing art in children's books. - Heather E. Ideal for authors, illustrators, parents, and teachers

If you're interested in illustrated children's books, or any aspect of the illustration process, this book is fascinating.

I'd like to write and illustrate some picture books, myself. I'm already an artist and an author, so the combination seems like a good match. However, when I sat down to work on illustrations for a picture book... my mind was blank. What do children look for in illustrations? What's important... and what's a wasted effort?

This book answered those questions for me.

I especially like the examples throughout this heavily illustrated book. You'll see early sketches, works in progress, and completed illustrations from many different artists. You'll learn the history of illustrations for children, and pick up important tips for drawing children and animals.

Several chapters focus on different kinds of media for illustrating, including black-and-white work, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, and more.

You'll learn about picture books as well as illustrating children's book, and designing illustrations for older children's books, as well. History books, poetry books... all kinds of topics are covered.

Cover design is included, alphabets and fonts are featured, and you'll learn about design as well as the publishing process.

This book is kind of a whirlwind of information, a little about every aspect of illustrating children's books. If you're looking for a step-by-step, "first you draw a circle for the head" kind of book... this isn't that.

However, if you want a rich overview of illustrating and children's books - as an author, illustrator, or someone who shares books with children -- this book is a must-read, and possibly a must-own. You'll see where your own strengths are, and where you may want to stretch yourself and acquire additional information and skills.

Important reference book for illustrators

I originally found this book at my library. After reading it I decided that it was one of those books I wanted to steal...so I bought myself a copy. It's given me so many clues to illustrating childrens books I had to have a copy for my personal reference library. It's got great pictures, examples and explanations of other illustrators techniques.

Great resource for the starting Illustrator

This is an excellent, easy read for those interested in illustrating children's books. I bought this book along with Writing with Pictures (which I do not recommend) and found this to be an incredibly valuable resource for someone NEW to the field or illustration student. The book is filled with interesting insights into the minds of various illustrators, tips for processing ideas, understanding how the basic process works when dealing with a publisher and writer, etc. It also has a great brief history of children's book illustration, and talks about what is happening today, as far as media, market, etc.

Unlike many "how-to" books, this one is actually fun to read- and very easy to finish. I have been bored to tears with how-to books in the past- but I finished this within a couple of days. It is filled with inspirational illustrations on every page, and being a very visual person, I found it delightful to read.

If you are looking for specifics- exactly how to lay out a page, exactly how to prepare a portfolio, (though it does give tips) exactly which publishers to send your work to- then you will find this book disappointing. However, if you are new to this field and want a basic overview (and a bit of encouragement) before getting a very specific book- this is the best buy out there.

Other books I highly recommend:
Childrens Writers & Illustrators Market 2007
Inside the Business of Illustration
Bologna Annual 2006 (Bologna Annual. Illustrators of Children's Books)

Scant on publishing information........

To me......the absolute most important aspect of illustrating children's books or any book for that matter is getting published. That translates to finding a publisher......submitting artwork......getting the publisher on board....negtioating an agreement......figuring out compensation......figuring out copyrights and what copyrights the artist retains.......and signing the contract. If the illustrator is working in conjunction with an author.....what are all the business decisions associated with a third party? All of these critically important aspects for any illustrator to get published are basically tossed into the very last chapter....in the very last pages of this book.....barely touched upon. There are page after page of useless words about types of media, subject matter, sketching approaches, etc......most of which would be covered in a college art class! The author devotes an entire chapter to the history of illustrating.....again.....interesting.......but totally useless for the modern day illustrator who's looking to break into the world of publishing for children's books. Sorry......this book was a waste of time.......

Eh

This book is not what I was expecting. It has a lot of history, but not a lot of advice. Not a bad book, but not a go to reference.

Beautiful book, fantastic overview.

This book is filled with lovely illustration examples. I find myself flipping through it all the time just because it's so pretty. The content is solid for an overview; you get history, types of media, practices, advice and resources. While I still feel a little overwhelmed by the process of submitting work this book has been a valuable resource.

General information with nothing specific to actually help you illustrate ...

General information with nothing specific to actually help you illustrate. Short discussion on different media but that is general, too. Very disappointing.
