Crunchy on the outside, chewey on the inside

This is my first Richard Laymon book, and probably my last. The premise was good, and the book actually started out pretty well, but it quickly became tedious and eventually dull until the final chapter. Jane, the main character, is a shallow, self-absorbed and self-conscious person who is difficult to like. Her wishy-washy internal dialogs become very annoying, and you begin to understand why she is single early on. There is also a long interlude where her Master of Games tells her to simply take a break, and we have to follow her on menial tasks and non-plot-advancing jogging trips. I was very close to quitting when he finally put things back into gear.

As for the "increasingly dangerous" tasks she is sent to perform for nothing more than cash (and later her self-centered body consciousness), they never had the feeling of danger to me until her visit to the second house she visits after the cemetery. Then, quite out of character with the previous tasks, there is horrific situations and life threatening circumstances that Jane should not be ready to take on in any realistic fashion.

Overall, I cannot say it was time wasted. However, it was probably the least entertaining book I have read for years.

a little silly

I gave it 3 stars because it started getting rather silly towards the end. however, it did have mystery and thrills. It had some relly scary parts.
