Description

“Explosive from beginning to end and one of those rare titles that is so much fun that you wish it would never end... INDEPENDENCE DAY may well be the best installment of the series to date. I don't think I'll celebrate another Fourth of July without thinking of it. There's enough action, explosions, fatalities and (best of all) intelligence nuggets to fill a summer's equivalent of books... Strongly recommended, from first page to last.” ― Bookreporter “Coes is in the same league as Brad Thor and Vince Flynn, and this high-octane race against time will have plot-driven thriller readers unable to turn the pages fast enough.” ― Booklist (starred review) on Independence Day “Compelling characters, a wealth of technical detail, and ticking-clock suspense make [INDEPENDENCE DAY] one of the year's best thrillers... Last-minute twists ratchet up the tension as the book races to the final confrontation.” ― Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Action, international intrigue, romance--it doesn't get any better.” ― San Jose Mercury News on The Last Refuge “Ben Coes has created a hero who ranks with the protagonists in a Vince Flynn or Brad Thor thriller . . . The Last Refuge is a winner and will keep readers turning the pages.” ― The Associated Press “My favorite novel in at least a decade. The writing was inherently masculine, brilliantly crafted.” ― Huffington Post on Eye for an Eye --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. BEN COES is the author of the critically acclaimed Power Down, Coup d'Etat, The Last Refuge , and Eye for an Eye . He is a former speechwriter for the George H .W. Simply an awesome book! I couldn't put it down!

I loved it! Our story starts with Dewey a distressed and almost broken man. We recall his fiancé was murdered in the last installment of the saga of Dewey Andreas. Our story involves Russian mobsters, hackers, a prima ballerina, Navy Seals, the CIA, and a plot to bomb us on July 4th. Ben Coes ability to weave such an involved plot in such a realistic and plausible way speaks to the fact that as an author, he is really hitting his stride. I literally couldn't put the book down. Coes ranks right up there with the late Tom Clancy and Vince Flynn, as well as Brad Thor in the best of the genre. I couldn't recommend it more.

Ben Coes nailed it with his latest novel INDEPENDENCE DAY

Some action books have lulls. Done correctly they can build suspense and add to the excitement of a good book. Ben Coes seems to have done so without the lulls. Action packed from beginning to end. Great to see Dewey Andreas back in fine form. Very enjoyable read.

Decent characters, terrible cliche of a plot

I really enjoyed Coes' first Dewey Andreas novel, but I think I'm done with this series. The plot is thin (terrorists and a nuclear bomb!) and loose ends are never tied up. Independence Day isn't as ridiculous as the previous entry in the series, but it's not much of an improvement. Read "Power Down" if you haven't already, then skip the rest - including this one.

I read it in a week, so it must have held my attention...

Not as good as I had hoped. Writing this review, I don't really remember the ending of the book, but I do recall finishing it. While not a memorable as Power Down or Coup De'Tat, Independence day was a good read. I liked the beginning with a history of Dewey and how he developed into the person he is, but I just don't remember much more beyond that from Independence Day. Does this make it a bad book, not at all. I got my entertainments value from it, but it just doesn't stand out like other Dewey Andreas novels.

A good idea that was not executed well.

I have read all of Ben Coes' books and I was NOT in love with this one. Here is why. First, there seems to be a new theme to writing thrillers, make them as confusing as possible with as many characters as possible. Mr. Coes succeeds there. Second, throw in as many acronyms and confusing computer language as you can...knowing full well that your reader has no idea what you are talking about...and have it go on for pages. Mr. Coes succeeds there. This was an annoying book. Why? Because it is a great idea that with some editing could have been terrific. Books do not have to be long to be good. They can just be good. Was Mr. Coes paid by the word? I know how very difficult it is to write a book that starts well and stays strong throughout. I know it is hard because it is so rarely done. But if you write a shorter book that is edited well, you have a shot. Sorry Ben, I was NOT impressed with this book and I found it tedious and silly.
When the motorcycle crashed at 160 miles and hour and the driver walked away from the crash, I knew we were in the land of the Three Stooges.

The Best Yet!

Ever since Ben Coes was recommend as an author by Vince Flynn, I was hooked on his Dewey Andreas series. Independence Day did not disappoint, with a thrilling, plausible plot line. But, even better, Mr. Comes gives us characters who display frailties to their determined, ultra-tough facade. This book was fast-paced, taking me rapidly from scene to scene, and I didn't want to put it down. Kudos to Ben Coes...well done.

Had a lot of potential.

The story was moving along really well until about 85% of the way through, and then just kind of came off the rails. Mr Coes weaves a great yarn, but may want to run his story by somebody familiar with Naval operations, satellites, and helicopters. I was never able to figure out why there was a General aboard a Naval vessel, or why he just happened to speak Vietnamese fluently. If Satellites fly at ten miles high, aircraft would be dodging them left and right. I'm not even going to touch the helicopter gaffs, but the research was weak. Several loose ends with the story, and things just started getting crazy towards the end, and random elements popping up that distracted from the plot.

Fast pace read

I have read all of Ben Coes books. Each have built upon one other, each book has NEVER been a disappointment. The character of Dewey is a man with a dark past which continues to follow him through each book. I look forward to your next book, Mr. Coes.

Definitely worth the wait

I forgot how much I missed Dewey until I started reading the book. I absolutely loved this book. I love the characters in the series and Independence Day delivered in every way for me. I could not put the book down and read it in a little over 2 days. I am really looking forward to the next book and will be buying the first few books in the series for a family member to read as well.

definitely not as good as books #1 and #3

In Power Down, the best of the series, Dewey was 42. Five books later he is 39. For a series that is fairly, new I would expect the author to know his main character. This book felt rushed.
Someone in the government is after Dewey, but it is never explained why. There was no point to this. This part could have been eliminated and would not have been missed. The Dewey we know would have taken off either way.
The plot was like every other book in the genre, someone has a nuclear weapon. Power Down and The last Refuge, were both very original plots, this one was not.
Most of the same character make an appearance, which was great. The new characters felt flat. I really like Dewey but not sure I will continue with the series.
