Features & Highlights

  • In a lightless world, only darkness can drive out darkness.
  • My name is Ethan Drake and I’m a police detective…and I got plenty darkness to give.
  • So does my partner, who’s a demon, and frankly, a royal pain in my ass. But occult investigators are in short supply in the PD, so what are you going to do? Anyway, we just caught a bodysnatching case that has the stench of occult workings all over it. Seems someone wants to summon something bad into this world, something that threatens the very fate of humanity. I could care less about the fate of humanity myself, but hey, when it’s your job, you gotta do something, right?
  • Only my job has been made harder by a demon who’s decided it wants me as a vessel, and will stop at nothing until it gets what it wants. Internal Affairs are also gunning for my badge over the murder of some guy who deserved it, and on top of that, I’m trying to solve the murders of my ex-wife and daughter. Oh, and don’t even get me started on the snarkiest Hellicorn in the known universe…
  • You know that thing threatening all of humanity?
  • I might just let it succeed…
  • Harry Bosch meets John Constantine in this gripping urban fantasy noir thriller.

Extreme anti-hero

The writing is solid. The story has some nice twists to keep the reader guessing. And Martin manages to add some original elements to keep this sub-genre fresh. So why didn't I give the book 5 stars? It's just that Ethan Drake really pushes the envelope of unlikeability in a protagonist. It was tough reading some of the things the "hero" was willing to do. I mean, in most urban fantasy, Ethan Drake would have been the villain. So if you like your protagonist to be an extreme anti-hero, consider this a 5 star review. If you like a protagonist you can admire and identify with, you might want to steer clear of this series.

Ethan Drake, hard boiled supernatural cop

When I like an author's work for series it is a bit nerve wracking to start a new series they have written. What if I don't like it? What if I hate it? Full disclosure on this is I got an ARC and was asked to leave a review. Fortunately, N.P. Martin, is a tough writer and can handle tough reviews so Go Him. This book is the first in a new series about Ethan Drake, a detective scarred by darkness having lost his wife and child to an unknown entity. He is driven to settle the score but life and crime goes on and so must he.. The characters are dark, the story is dark but oh so compelling. I read this straight through and just couldn't put it down. Totally bummed when I finished it and can't wait for the next book. Definitely one of my top 10 new urban paranormal books in my library, and I read a lot! Try this book. You won't regret it.

Amazing -- Need More Detectives Like Ethan & Hannah

Infernal Justice is Book 1 I the Ethan Drake series. This is a superbly written paranormal urban fantasy. Our main characters Ethan Drake (a police detective assigned to Unit X, Paranormal Investigations) and Hannah Walker his partner (a demon who Ethan consider a pain in the a$$) are exceptionally well developed and interesting. If you're looking for an action-packed, page-turning rollercoaster ride adventure, this is the book for you. Can't say enough about what a phenomenal book this is. I read this in one sitting and though this ended nicely, I wanted more. Hopefully Book 2 will be available soon as I am anxious to see what Neal Martin is going to put out two detectives through. I highly recommend this book. I received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.

Magic, mayhem and megawatt entertainment...

This fast-paced first installment of a new series is a page-turner that will capture your imagination and your attention with the first page and won’t let go until the very last sentence. Ethan Drake is a police detective assigned to a paranormal investigative unit called Unit X. During the course of an investigation he and his partner, Hannah Walker (a demon with a complex and captivating backstory), find themselves discredited and must clear their names or relinquish their law enforcement careers forever. All manner of madness ensues taking the reader on a wild ride that includes hellions, hellbeasts, demons, necromancers, and, yes, even vampires (though vampires rate only a cameo appearance). All in all, you get unique and intriguing characters, an introduction to a fascinating paranormal reality to kindle your curiosity, and a satisfying conclusion to the immediate story that leaves plenty of room for more adventures ahead. For those concerned about “hot-button” issues: yes, there is a somewhat graphic sex scene, and yes, there is a generous peppering of coarse language. While not for young readers, this story is, in my opinion, an auspicious beginning for a series that promises to distract and delight the more seasoned individual seeking an imaginative and compelling bit of escapist reading.

I was gifted an advance copy of this book and the above is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Angels, Demons and 1 crazy Detective

Great premise. Gets the reader early and doesn’t let go until the end. Characters had their own identities that interwove easily throughout the story. Fast paced leaving the reader wanting to keep turning pages. Nice ending or beginning?

New Series Has Potential

Interesting start to a new urban fantasy series that is darker than most. A lot of backstory exposition and secondary characters make the plot somewhat dense. The lead character Ethan Drake is a deeply broken man who will do whatever he needs to do no matter the consequences. As referenced in the book blurb, Ethan has potential to become the urban fantasy version of Harry Bosch.
