Features & Highlights

  • When they were kids, Gillian and John used to visit the local cemetery every Sunday after church. It was a curious place for children to frequent, but they had their reasons. The main attraction was the lofty hill that separated the cemetery from the elementary school, and the act of tumbling down it like Jack and Jill was a ritualistic escape from the abuse they were suffering at their father's hands. It was an escape that lasted only until John's tragic death. Now, Gillian is all grown up. Married with two children, she has managed over the years to force the trauma of her nightmarish childhood into the darkest recesses of her mind. But lately there are dreams, and in them Gillian sees impossibly vivid reenactments of the horrors she endured as a child. Nightly, she sees John die all over again, only not in the way she remembers. And something else is in those dreams, stalking her, a terrible figure with wire-hanger hands and a plastic bag wrapped around its rotten face. A monster whose reach starts to extend beyond the boundaries of sleep into the waking world, threatening everything Gillian holds dear. A monster she once called Daddy.

Jill came tumbling after

I've read Burke's Sour Candy and once done, I wanted to buy up all his books. I refrained and just bought a couple of them. This was one. Although I didn't like it as much, I still very much enjoyed it. It can be a tough read for some. It is a story surrounded by incest/pedophilia and quite disturbing at that. I thought the best parts of the books were the dreams that Gillian (aka Jill) was having. They were full on creepy and very realistic as dreams go. The rest of the story was painful but in a good way. You could feel all the sadness and tension throughout the book. I can't wait to read the next book I have by Burke. He is turning into a go to author for me.

disappointing

It could have been good... I guess. Started off decent and then... that was it. I think it needed to be a bit longer and go a bit more in depth with the characters. The ending was suuuuuuper weak.

A Profound Dark Story

WOW! This story was incredible. It is a very dark story that will haunt you. This was a quick one sit read that leaves you gasping especially at the twist that I did not see coming. The writing was superb and leaves you feeling Gillian's pain and confusion about her past. Even though the subject matter was difficult to read it kept me on the edge of my seat with every page.

Trigger Warning for victims of sexual abuse

Extremely disturbing, but in the best way.

Oh. My. Gosh. I’m so glad I discovered Kealan Burke through bookstagram this year. His books are the first horror reads I’ve experienced and my goodness! They haven’t let down at all.
Jack and Jill is no exception. I am baffled still that a novella can be so short and yet pack such a powerful story.
But be warned: this novella is very dark. And I will say for people who haven’t read it that there is a trigger warning for child abuse so please approach with caution.
This story was definitely not an easy read even though it was a short book. It was terrifying, and yes, due to scary elements you would expect to find in a horror read, but also because of a childhood ripped away by a sick man. To see the lasting impact it had on a woman trying to move on with her own children. I sat on my couch just staring at the book a good 10 minutes after I had finished. Not just because of the harrowing content, but because of that ending! 😳 If you think you can handle this novella, please read it. It shook me to my core in more ways than one; it is a story I will never forget.
