Description

"Just Last Night is now one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time, a book I almost wish I’d written, except that would have robbed me of the intense joy of reading it. Mhairi McFarlane writes with a singular wit, charm, and emotional complexity, every word just right, every page brimming with delicious tension. This is the kind of novel that will have you putting everything else on hold so you can keep turning pages until you reach its sparkling, brilliant end.” — Emily Henry, #1 New York Times bestselling author of People We Meet on Vacation "This book about the tangled web of unrequited love between long-term friends made me sob early on, and laugh hard enough to make up for it later. McFarlane is one of my all-time favorite writers now." — Emily Henry "Honestly, I cannot remember the last book I loved as much...xa0What a luminous, heart-achingly beautiful love letter to friendship. Knockout!"xa0 — Josie Silver, New York Times bestselling author of The Two Lives of Lydia Bird "[JUST LAST NIGHT] manages to be both genuinely heartbreaking and hilarious - that's how good Mhairi McFarlane is. It's a gorgeously romantic novel, as well as a story about friendship and grief and loss; I never wanted it to end." — Beth O’Leary, bestselling author of The Switch "McFarlanexa0deftly balances the weight of grief and secrets with the lighthearted banter of both long friendships and surprising new connections. There is a romantic plot line, but the real love story will be between readers and Eve as she tries to figure out how to put her life back together, or if she even wants to. Charming, emotionally satisfying, and unforgettable."xa0 — Booklist (starred review) "McFarlane balances sensitive observations on love, death, and friendship with an intoxicating sense of humor as Eve imagines Susie’s witty asides in her head. Eve has a way with words and her ebullient narration delights... an engaging protagonist whose complex emotions keep the pages turning... [A] dynamic story of friendship, forgiveness, and finding love where it’s least expected..." — Publishers Weekly "It's a long time since I loved any book as much. [Mhairi's] so BRILLIANT on relationships, friendships and emotions. Her characters are nuanced, convincing and loveable. She deserves massive praise and recognition. I loved loved loved this book." — Marian Keyes, bestselling author of Grown Ups “McFarlane has a charming voice, one distinctly British in its wry humor, whimsical turn of phrase, and vibrant sense of setting... the novel itself is a dizzy delight, bursting with rom-com tropes... If I Never Met You is quippy and warm, an escape in almost every sense of the word, and McFarlane’s irresistible voice that balances pathos and humor in equal measure leaves us wanting more.”xa0 — Entertainment Weekly "McFarlane's gift is writing romantic comedy that depicts a recognizable world... without dimming the luster of shining moments of humor, love, and connection... a very funny, very romantic story with deep emotional impact."xa0 — Kirkus Reviews (starred review) on If I Never Met You “Mhairi McFarlane’s voice is as clear as a bell—she makes you laugh, but she also makes you feel. I adore her!” — Sally Thorne, USA Today bestselling author of The Hating Game and Second First Impressions , on If I Never Met You "Readers who swarm to contemporary romance authors like Christina Lauren and Tessa Bailey... will enjoy this title."xa0 — Booklist on If I Never Met You "McFarlanexa0brings a welcome dose of reality to the fake office romance trope with flawed, honest, but still endearing protagonists...xa0McFarlane’s arch humor and earnest characters make this familiar plot feel fresh, fun, and genuinely moving. This is a delightful rom-com full of sass, sparkle, and heart. " — Publishers Weekly on If I Never Met You “Fun and engaging but with thought-provoking twists that deepen the emotional impact beyond light romantic comedy.” — Kirkus Reviews “McFarlane delivers a novel with heart and humor, comprised of laugh-out-loud one liners, outrageous comedic scenes, and a Nana who deserves a medal for her non-filtered tongue. Meanwhile, she isn’t afraid to explore the grief process as Georgina processes her father’s death, and a mixture of emotions are evoked as Georgina goes on a journey of self-discovery, complete with her hot pink fur coat.” — Booklist “Bridget Jones, you’ve got some competition.” — Marie Claire “McFarlane uses Georgina’s voice to explore how humor is used to mask pain as well as to help understand and get through it. Successful as both a romantic comedy and an insightful look into finding one’s voice, this is a story readers will flock to for the laughs and remember for its realness.” — Library Journal “McFarlane strikes romantic comedy gold with this tale of reunited sweethearts who have to grapple with the past... deeply satisfying on several levels, and Lucas’s final romantic speech is one for the ages.. a beautiful balance of tenderness, wry humor, and deep emotion.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review) "A xa0page-turner about a heroine with a laugh-out-loud voice, an endearing romance, and, as the British say, lashings of drama." — NPR "McFarlane’s romances are always worth the journey. With incredible warmth, humor and humanity, they stir such deep empathy and engagement that you won’t just watch the characters’ cathartic experiences; you’ll feel them. Likewise, you won’t just admire this group friendship; you’ll feel like you’re a part of it, and that you’re all the better for it.” — BookPage Sunday Times bestselling author Mhairi McFarlane was born in Scotland in 1976 and her unnecessarily confusing name is pronounced Vah-Ree. After some efforts at journalism, she started writing fiction and her first book, You Had Me At Hello , was an instant success. She's since sold nearly 2 million copies of her books. Mad About You is her eighth novel and she lives in Nottingham with a man and a cat.

It isn’t a bad story but it isn’t as good as her previous book.

Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book!

We to start by saying that we really loved this author’s book If I never Met You. We had hoped this book would be similar.

It really isn’t. It didn’t come close unfortunately!

We have a dysfunctional group of friends that apparently are linked emotionally and sexually (though that’s a surprise for later). Slowly secrets come out when one of them abruptly dies. Our main character, Eve, is super funny and clever and we did enjoy reading about her and watching her find herself after her best friend dies. But her obsession with Ed, who is clearly using her and manipulative, is so annoying. It’s sad that for 3/4 of the book we have to see this snd then boom all of a sudden shes over him after 16 years and in love with Finley to the point of spending dating and spending every other month in America.

We feel bad for Eve when she finds out Ed slept with her best friend and no one told her (THAT IS MESSED UP!). Ed told the other man of their group but Susie never fessed up to Eve. Clearly Ed is a loser before and Susie, “the friend”, doesn’t seem to have been that great of a friend.

It is hard to read this book when it all comes as a reaction to Susie’s death and Susie just isn’t very likeable. Love the main love interest Finley. We had suspicions about why he was estranged from his family and let’s just say they were correct.

Finley’s relationship with our main woman is a sloooooowwww build up. To slow. There isn’t enough heat or romance to really make this book easy to read. Wish we had more of this couple and this build up instead of the friend group and people sleeping with each other. Honestly you don’t get much love/romance until the last 40 pages or so. What’s the point to rush from 3 days spent together searching for his senile father to I love you! Just nope not after we get these snippets of how much she hates him and he her. You think ooo an unrequited love story....wrong....then you think ooo enemies to lovers but what we get isn’t close.

Overall, this book is kind of not what it’s pitched to be.

Not good

I just didn’t like it. It had lots of movie references that I didn’t understand and British slang I didn’t get. The dialogue was hard to follow along with at parts. I read 250 books a year, several British, and this one was really tough for me. Plus the story dragged. I was not pleased.

Lyrical and funny

I hope I am not giving anything away from this review. I just love this so much, I want to go on and on. 😅

I first listened to this on audiobook but going into 20% of it, I knew I had to read it, to fully experience it.
.
Susie, Eve, Ed and Justin are friends since they were young and have been inseparable since then. This is made a little complicated by the fact that Eve has been in love with Ed for years, and has been holding on to her what ifs. A sudden tragedy happened that opened to a can of worms.
.
Most of the time, when I read books, there is empathy for the characters although the feelings are there. This one is a punch in the gut, I found myself relating to parts of the plot.
.
There are so many parts of the book that had me stop and make sure I annotate because the quotes are so true for me.
.
For friendship, “ There’s something exceptional about friendships with friends you’ve known since you were young. They know all the versions of you.” This made me reflect. The longest friendship I have right now is the group of friends I had since I was in highschool. This applied to only a few of them, still, it’s true.
.
Also this one - “ My conclusion is this: there’s no rule that says the unavailable person you waste your life being in love with has to be the greatest human you ever met.” The feels, my goodness. There are a lot more, but it would reveal how hung up I am. 🤣
.
I love Eve, she has been through a lot, along with her friends, but she found herself and stood up for herself after everything that happened.
.
The topic of loss and grief is here, but I love that this was dealt with on a fair amount of time. Not rushed nor prolonged. Having experienced it myself in the past, I found it authentic and accurate. That’s also why I relate to this book so much.
.
I haven’t read any books by Mhairi McFarlane, this is the first - and I love her writing! For me, it’s poetic and lyrical and so so funny! Eve’s lines are so funny and witty that I read them again just to experience the hilarity of it. Absolutely amazing.
.
I would rate this more than five stars, to be honest. ❤️

This is a case of DO NOT judge a book by its cover.

This is not your run of the mill light hearted romcom.

It started slow and I was a little weary feeling like I'd have to come back to it another time, however the halfway point is when it finally started flowing for me and then I couldn't put it down.

It will stab you in the gut and keep twisting. I didn't find myself crying so much as wondering. So many good references, quotes, views from other people's shoes...that kinda stuff.

I feel the synopsis doesn't do the book justice. Honestly just go in blind if you are up for the challenge. I'm not good with explaining things at a deep level. This would be a really good book club pick to help disect all the pieces.

Great book about grief

As someone who lost my sister suddenly, I can say that this book NAILED the experience of sudden traumatic grief, and of the gymnastics you go through after the loss trying to balance your selective memory with the reality of who they were. Really, after 2.5 years of reading grief books and grief Instagram accounts, this book still managed to put into words feelings I had not been able to express before. It was an incredibly healing experience.

I only gave it 4 stars because I read literary fiction and am used to things being a lot less cutesy than they were here. Paragraphs of unrealistic dialogue and endless too-perfect witty responses took away my suspension of disbelief. There were at least two GLARING surface errors that belied a rush job of editing. And I get that this is somewhat of a rom-com, but that trope of “oh every guy was obsessed with you, even the hottest most in demand ones, but would never tell you because you were so cool and smart and quiet and unapproachable” is just so tired and Mary-Sue-ish that I automatically downgrade a book’s quality ceiling if it relies on it. Really, love is interesting and varied enough that it doesn’t have to be described through the same unrealistic, wishful thinking lens all the time. Maybe that’s okay with this genre, but I as a reader expect more.

If this book hadn’t had such a powerful and realistic depiction of grief, I would have given it 3 stars. As it stands, it’s a fun beach read with surprising emotional depth, so 4 stars it is. Could have been a 5-star masterpiece with better editing to weed out poorly constructed dialogue and romance tropes!

Fantastic read!

Eve, Justin, Susie, and Ed have been friends since they were teenagers. Now in their thirties, the four are as close as ever, Thursday night bar trivia is sacred, and Eve is still secretly in love with Ed. But in an instant their lives are changed forever. Eve’s world is upended as secrets are revealed, and she wonders if she really knew her friends as well as she thought she did.

This is my first time hearing of this author, and I am officially in love! This is the first ARC that I read that I’m actually going to purchase the book when it’s released; that’s how much I loved it (and I don’t typically like chick lit). The first quarter of the book or so is really fun to read. The snarky, witty dialogue between the four friends is fantastically done. A lot of authors struggle with realistic dialogue, but not here. And the fact that I got Twin Peaks, Paul Weller, and The Cure references warmed my black Gen X heart. In the midst of the fun times, this book took a HARD left turn. But it was no less enjoyable. The way the author dealt with the aftermath was really lovely, and made me tear up. Yes, I’m being vague, I don’t want to give away too much of the plot. Oh, and the way the secret love story was done was *chef’s kiss*. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go read every single thing McFarlane has ever written.

More Com than Rom

This book is about four friends: Eve, Justin, Ed, and Susie but Eve has a crush on Ed and wants to do something about it until one day their lives change and their secrets are being revealed. I enjoyed most of the writing of this book. This is a rom-com book that had a lot of enjoyable comedy. I thought the author did a wonderful job of adding great jokes that made the story entertaining. I also enjoyed the story about the four friends and how there are so many secrets between them. The pacing I had to say was a little slow at times and I kind of struggled towards the ending of the book. Though I did enjoy the journey the characters had as that was fun and enjoyable.

This book is written from Eve’s POV. She is in her 30s but I felt that she acted as she was a teenager kind of though I did enjoy her character for most of the book. I thought she was fun and an adventurous character The supporting characters were also great in this book and it was nice to meet all of the characters. They played major roles in the book and it was nice to see them more involved in the book. So the part I didn’t enjoy was the romance. I felt the romance between the main couple was kind of rush and forced instead of being slow. I wish the couple got to spend more time with each other even though I totally ship them.

The ending was left a little abruptly though it wasn’t bad. I enjoyed this book as it was a fun read even though it missed some marks here and there. I heard great things about the other author’s books and I will be reading those. I think this book will be great for those who enjoy rom-coms (even though I didn’t enjoy the romance some will!) Also, the cover is pretty so why not pick it up?

A Romance w/ Heavy Plot (You'll Laugh, You'll Cry)

*** Contains Spoilers

This book has such a delightful conversational tone. I think the author was brilliant in her timeline, even if I was a bit thrown at first. I did find myself stumbling over some of the writing, though I’ll admit to half of this probably stemming from pop culture references I didn’t get and British terms unknown to me. There’s a definite British tone to the writing, which is pretty cool!

This book has a lot of heavy, though. So be prepared. Loss is the primary focus, and Mhairi has a very realistic grasp on it. It will pull at your heart strings, for sure. As someone who has lost a loved one, I felt Mhairi handled everything realistically and sensitively.

Because loss was such a big focus for the first half of the book, I did not know where this story was going to go. I had ideas, but several times I found myself wondering where in the world I’d end up. What happy ending am I going to get? It didn’t stop me from not being able to put the book down. Just one more chapter…

I was NOT disappointed. Okay. Maybe a little disappointed that we didn't have more Eva and Fin action. I definitely wanted to see more of their story. I felt like we were just getting to the good part and then the story ended. I could have used another 100 pages of them. I don't know how, but I want a spinoff with these two. Which goes to show how well Mhairi did with her characters. Each character was so fleshed out. Each of them played their part, and I loved it. It felt like a real friend group.

I cried, I laughed, I cried, and I ended the book with a smile. Well done!
