Description

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—About-to-be-executed spy Nathan Hale entertains his captors and readers by telling stories about U.S. history in this popular graphic novel series. In this installment, Hale returns to the setting of the American Revolution to focus on the early life of French aristocrat and Revolutionary War hero Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. Young, passionate about the American cause, and endearing, Lafayette was accepted into the Continental Army when other French officers were rejected, because of his humility and willingness to learn (and because he was well connected and his wealth meant that he didn't require a salary). George Washington took him under his wing, and Lafayette's loyalty to the commander-in-chief saved Washington from a plot to remove him from command. The narrative pauses for an eight-page mini-comic about Benedict Arnold, the notorious traitor. Newcomers to the series are given enough context in the first few pages to figure out the dynamic among the Provost, Hangman, and Hale and will soon feel in on the jokes in the meta commentary. As has become customary in the "Hazardous Tales," accurate historical facts are made fun and palatable through the action-packed graphic format and a humorous lens. VERDICT A must-buy.–Kacy Helwick, New Orleans Public Library **STARRED REVIEW** "Newcomers to the series are given enough context in the first few pages to figure out the dynamic among the Provost, Hangman, and Hale and will soon feel in on the jokes in the meta commentary. As has become customary in the “Hazardous Tales,” accurate historical facts are made fun and palatable through the action-packed graphic format and a humorous lens . . . A must-buy."― School Library Journal "Hale does a tremendous job of telling the complicated story of one of the most celebrated men in history with facts and figures interspersed throughout the often humorous and informative narrative. His intricately drawn panels are beautifully colored . . . His precise linework and neat lettering make the multitude of thought and speech balloons in the easy-to-read panels. History lovers and comics readers alike will thoroughly enjoy this story of Lafayette and his quest for victory."― Booklist "Hale (the author) yet again weaves a delightful and engaging narrative sprinkled with silly and scatalogical humor . . . Fans of history, Hamilton, and/or Hale's previous entries will be clamoring for this latest volume."― Kirkus Reviews Nathan Hale is the #1 New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of the Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales series. He also wrote and illustrated the graphic novels One Trick Pony and Apocalypse Taco . Hale lives in Utah, and you can find him online. Read more

  • Gilbert du Motier became the Marquis de Lafayette at a young age, but he was not satisfied with the comforts of French nobility. He wanted adventure! A major general by nineteen, he was eager to prove himself in battle. When he heard about the revolution going on in America, he went overseas. He fought with George Washington and Alexander Hamilton in America’s war for independence. Passionate about the American cause—and endearing—Lafayette was accepted into the Continental Army when other French officers were not because of his willingness to learn (and because his wealth meant that he didn’t require a salary). General Washington took him under his wing, and Lafayette’s loyalty to the commander-in-chief even saved Washington from a plot to remove him from command. Lafayette would become a legend on both sides of the Atlantic and a symbol of the enduring friendship between America and France.

Thank you, AGAIN, Nathan Hale for bringing the joy of reading to my son!

My ten year old has been looking forward to Nathan Hale's latest book for months. We were so excited to have "Lafayette" delivered on the release date. My son read it cover-to-cover in one long sitting. It was blissful to have a night of family reading time, and not even a hint of asking for screen time. Each book in the Hazardous Tales series has enthralled my son. I give these books to parents of his friends that are trying to find the right "hook" to get their kids to enjoy reading. My kid is a history buff and these books really speak to his interest. If anyone can recommend other series of a similar vein, I'm all ears! In the meantime, this will be read over and over again, and we will not-so-patiently await Nathan Hale's next project!

Engrossing, endearing, entertaining, and fascinating

I have students who will only read these books. No other book gets them excited to read, but with these books, they will sit silently for 20 minutes and read, sometimes so engrossed in it that I have to urge them to put it down when it's time to move on.

Mr. Hale better keep writing more of these. I don't know what I'll do when my students get through them all.

Great binge-read series for elementary school kids

My 10 and 12 year old children read books 1-5 in short order. They both read the series in about a week and then displayed the books on their shelf -- a place of honor :). Both my kids are good readers, but they're somewhat picky about what they like. This series might be good for kids who liked Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dragonbreath, and/or Dogman.

Another awesome Hazardous Tale

My kids and I have been hooked on these that we have had the library copies continuously checked out and decided we should probably buy copies of our own. This graphic novel covers Lafayette's early life through the end of the American Revolutionary War. My favorite effect of a Hazardous Tale is that it gets my 7 and 9 year old interested in learning more about the subjects Mr. Hales covers. They went and looked up the rest of Lafayette's amazing life story after the American Revolution. I hope that part of the his tale can be told by Mr. Hale in the future. Can't wait for more!

Amazing history!

My son waits for each book to come out from this author and devours every one in a day's time. This book is no exception. All of Nathan Hale's books can be read and re-read as so many details cover each page. What an inspiring author! Thanks for helping my kid love history!

Great Book For Boys Who Like History

My 12 year old grandson raved about this book. He read it in one sitting. He likes history and this book tells in a unusual way. It's almost comic book like. There are others in the series that he's asking for already. I should say he's not really a reader either but this book really held his interest.
