Description

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Debut author Bolling presents 10 forms of dance in short, rhyming stanzas. Each spread features a two-part phrase written in a font that matches the dance style. Alongside the text are bright, spirited illustrations of children doing various dances such as Kathak (India) and Kuku (Guinea), as well as styles with origins in the United States, including break dancing and disco. While some of the rhymes are very descriptive, others are nonspecific and do not provide much to enhance the illustrations. For example, the page with the Long-Sleeve Dance from China says "Glide and slide, side to side." Images depicting dances from the United States feature groups of children who are diverse in race, body size, and abilities. The back matter contains short description of each dance style, though, owing to the length and intended audience, these are also somewhat limited. VERDICT A fun and lively title; however, children will learn only a limited amount about each type of dance. Fabulous!!!

In a time when differences are not celebrated enough, this book is a breath of fresh air. Valerie, the author, cleverly introduces children to many dance moves from various backgrounds not only with the use of adorable illustrations but most importantly with the use of several fonts throughout the book. What a fantastic idea! Both readers and listeners will be dancing when finished reading. I love it.

Wonderful and engaging- Much needed fun

My seven year old boy opened Let’s Dance and was instantly drawn to the wonderful images and text. He began moving his body, laughing, making up his own moves and ultimately his own dance (complete with narration). Today more than ever we are connected as a global community- fostering these links with feeling is so important and Valerie’s playful book does just that. Let’s Dance will be my go to gift book for littles!

Wonderfully engaging

Featuring several actual styles of dance from around the world, this book uses poetry and beautiful, accurate illustrations to engage the reader in enthusiasm for dancing. Homeschoolers and others who enjoy well-informed illustrations and details will love this book for many ages of children from toddlers on up to at least 7 or 8 year olds. The end of the book features more detailed descriptions for the types of dance, and would be a wonderful jumping off point for further inquiry into dance, music, and/or geography.

Fun read-aloud book about dances all over the world

I absolutely loved this charming book that highlights dances around the world in such a vivid, fun way! The dance steps and sounds, the onomatopoeia, and rhyme just beg to be read aloud, and the beautiful illustrations really bring the characters and dances to life. And, I loved seeing the diversity of characters in the pages!

great illustrations and nice message

“Turn, Twirl, Twist, Whirl" with kids from around the world in this beautiful picture book!

Let's Dance! gives readers a glimpse into dance styles and costumes from a variety of cultures. A diverse cast of children joyfully spin, tap, groove, slide, and leap across the pages to the rhyming rhythmic text. These kids may look different and wear different clothes, but it's easy to see that they all love to dance.

At the end of the book, you'll find a sentence or two about each style of dance and its country of origin, each accompanied by a happy dancer of course!

The illustrations in this book are beautiful, and include a diverse set of characters; you'll see dancers from various countries and with different physical abilities. Many kids will be able to find a dancer that they can relate to on these pages, and they're likely to be introduced to some new faces, new clothing styles, and new dance moves as well.

If you happen to have a kid who can sit still through all those dance moves, this might make a good bedtime story. There's a super cute scene at the end where a sleepy girl counts sheep who just happen to be doing the dances we saw throughout the book.

You'll Want to Dance...

The language in the book is so rhythmic. You want to rap the lyrics as you read it out loud. The illustrations seem to move on the pages, too. As an ESL teacher, I love this as a way to teach verbs (there are so many ways to move!) and to show the diversity of our class. I bet everyone has a customary dance that they'd like to show off. The book comes with back matter about the various dances, so kids who love to dance can learn more about a particular dance (the cha-cha, flamenco, kuku...). I plan to have my own students and families writing about their own culture's dances, too!

Dancing fun with feet and fingers

The rhyming text will help early readers enjoy watching characters dance. The lovely illustrations show children how to move. They are diverse, in a wheelchair, and having a joyous time dancing. The sheep at the end are funny! They’re singing and twirling in each dance form. The notes in the back of the book describe 10 dance types while showing costumes from around the world. These can enrich classroom activities in the study of celebrations and other cultures.
