Description

‘[a] beautiful book...the words Sandling unearths are as delightful as the objects he describes.’ - Daily Mail 'Exhilaratingly curious and entertainingly knowledgeable, Sandling is especially good at following the fractals of his eclectic finds...each object beautifully photographed… He is a fine observer, too, of the potent flawed beauty of his hoard of rescued treasure… With handsome photography, an introduction by Iain Sinclair and a chapter of excellent practical advice for would-be mudlarkers, this book is an indispensable v ade-mecum for anyone who has ever been tempted to explore the secrets that lie hidden in plain sight on the shores of London’s great river.' - Jane Shilling, Evening Standard 'hypnotic — yet infectiously jolly... [Ted Sandling] has a sharp eye and aesthetic appreciation for the fragments of objects that now surface in the gravel and mud. The detailed photos of his finds are gripping... Among the billionaire property speculation apartment blocks, this is the opposite of uncanny: the sense of continuity instead makes you a little tearful.' - Sinclair McKay, Spectator ‘Beautifully illustrated’ - Monocle ‘I found a distinct frisson running through me as I read this book… [Mudlarking] is free to anyone, although many readers, I suspect, will be happy that Ted Sandling has done it for them... Each [find] has been indefatigably researched… The surviving words on a tiny, 19th-century type block found at Vauxhall read like poetry: "GOLD Handsome… graved, and… Pearls and fine… lustrous Gems." They could stand as a motto to the book. To the mudlark, every Waldorf Hotel teacup or lead-glazed pipkin handle is a jewel.’ - Clive Aslet, Country Life "Sandling's aim is to increase inquisitiveness, and he undoubtedly achieves this." "Sandling tells us not only what the pieces are but also how they feel in the hand. He notes the smallest details." "...as Sandling writes, 'modernity doesn't exist on thexa0foreshore'. The river is 'no respecter of chronology', and Sandling mimics its eddying rhythm, arranging his finds by theme rather than age." "...the significance of these fragments lies in the stories they tell us about the everyday lives of the people to whom there are no monuments or blue plaques." - Sabhbh Curran, Times Literary Supplement "the book is packed with plenty of shard photographs covering a range of styles, decorative techniques and vessel function" "if...you like to dip in and out of our capital's heritage [this book] is a wonderful companion" - Karen Tooth, London Potters News After studying History of Art at The University of Bristol, Ted Sandling moved to London and became a garden designer and landscape historian. In 2008 he returned to the fine arts when he joined Christie's. He now works at Christie's Education. He first went mudlarking in 2004 and was instantly hooked.

  • Mudlarking, the act of searching the Thames foreshore for items of value, has a long tradition in England's capital. In the late 18th and 19th centuries, mudlarks were small boys grubbing a living from scrap. Today’s mudlarks unearth relics of the past from the banks of the Thames which tell stories of Londoners throughout history. From Roman tiles to elegant Georgian pottery, presented here are modern-day mudlark Ted Sandling's most evocative finds, gorgeously photographed. Together they create a mosaic of everyday London life through the centuries, touching on the journeys, pleasures, vices, industries, adornments and comforts of a world city. This unique and stunning book celebrates the beauty of small things, and makes sense of the intangible connection that found objects give us to the individuals who lost them.

Word pictures entice, but pictures would help

Tours the River Thames, but also the author’s quirky and generous mind. I’ve been a beach comber all my life (when I could get to a beach); mudlarking expands the joy of discovery into the realm of archeology. The author has done her homework about the various layers of history concealed—and revealed—from the mud. Her descriptions of objects she has found are as nuanced and evocative as word descriptions can be, but I was longing for just a few photographs! There are none.
Another book I purchased on the subject, ”Mudlark River” has two distant pictures of the river, one of the author, and not a single object. “London in Fragments” has an abundant treasury of pictures, and they are colored! It’s a wonderful companion to the first book, Mudlarking.

Not what I expected

Not at all what I expected and all the better for it. I had expected glossy photos of fantastic finds and a chronological history based on those finds. What I got was lovely glossy photos of humble bits and pieces, each coupled with archeological and social history, literary reference, and gentle good humor. These are the kinds of things the average person walking the foreshore of the Thames would pass over as rubbish, but the author sees as a window into the society that produced them. A really fascinating and lovely book.

Excellent book!

This book exceeded my expectations! Well written and filled with quality photography, it documents and depicts many glimpses into London's history. The physical book is very well constructed as well! Anyone who is interested in any aspect of history, archeology, adventure or treasure hunting will enjoy this! You don't have to live in England to appreciate this book. As a child, I often walked the shores of the Clinch River here in Tennessee, looking for fossils, arrowheads, discarded fishing lures, or whatever was there. I was a "mudlarker" before mudlarking was a "thing"! Now I'm doing it again! Thank you!

Inspiring and informative!

I loved reading about the author’s experiences with mudlarking and the many clear photographic examples of “finds.” This was particularly important in terms of providing evidence of what possibly could be recovered and enabled me to judge what I found myself. I am really going to study this book even more thoroughly before the next time I take on the Thames!

Interesting read!

Very interesting book. Once did a bit of "mudlarking" one day on the Thames many, many years ago and picked up some small bits and bobs and was excited to hear about this book. Made me wish I could be back in London again mudlarking on the Thames!
