Description

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—When Momofuku Ando sees long lines of people waiting for food near his home in Osaka, Japan, shortly after World War II, his dream is born: to create the perfect bowl of noodles to feed hungry communities around the world. Realizing that "the world is peaceful only when everyone has enough to eat," he spends months testing recipes for the ideal noodle soup: tasty, perfectly seasoned, comforting, and preparable "anytime, anywhere." Each attempt at the perfect bowl of soup yields a different result: noodles that are too soggy, too brittle, or too soft. Despite personal and financial setbacks, he keeps the needs of the hungry and disenfranchised always at the center of his mission as he aims to maximize nutrition and nourishment. After trying and failing several times over, his "magic ramen" recipe is finally born: a perfectly fried noodle-broth combination that can be made in minutes by simply adding water. His invention is a success, making ramen a worldwide sensation and recognized household favorite. The author's tribute to one of history's most important inventors is complemented by digital illustrations, which separate well-paced text and add strong visual appeal to this exceptional biography picture book. An afterword is provided, giving readers additional insight into Ando's life and legacy and its connection to food history and popular culture, especially the creation of the widely recognizable Cup Noodles. VERDICT An inspiring story of persistence and an ideal purchase for any collection.–Natalie Romano, Denver Public Library An inspiring story of persistence and an ideal purchase for any collection. ― School Library Journal, STARRED REVIEW Eaters of all ages will enjoy learning about the history of this popular food gone global. ― Kirkus Reviews Magic Ramen , for me, is the kind of book that can bridge that gap between kids that like fact and kids that like fiction. Luring fiction readers over to the world of informational texts is one of my great pleasures in life. It isn't all that hard, if the book is interesting enough, the text fun, and the subject original. This is the book that can convince a child that real life is just as full of kooky stories as anything you could make up. So here's to the little bio unafraid to try something new. And, unlike Momofuku Ando, it gets it right on the very first try. -- Betsy Bird ― School Library Journal "Warning: Reading this on a cold, snowy day will give you a serious hankering for the stuff[ramen]. Just ask my five-year-old...As Publisher's Weekly notes, 'Starry-eye as it may sound, the goal ofpeace through food seems important - and possible - by the story's end.'" ― Smithsonian Magazine "Vivid artwork by debut artist Urbanowicz uses a clear line style to combine documentary seriousnesswith humor, drawing Ando eyeing a piece of his wife's tempura, wondering whether deep-frying thenoodles will allow boiling water to penetrate them. (It does.) Persistence is at the heart of this successstory as Ando presses on despite numerous setbacks. And, starry-eyed as it may sound, the goal ofpeace through food seems important - and possible - by the story's end." ― Publishers Weekly Andrea Wang , the Newberry Honor and APALA Award winning author of the Caldecott Medal winning Watercress , loves noodles, food, and noodling about food. A former environmental scientist, she appreciates Ando's scientific spirit, persistence in the face of failure, and passion for making the world a better place.Andrea lives in Colorado with her family and their dog, Mochi. Sometimes they have instant ramen for breakfast. You can find out more about Andrea at andreaywang.com. Kana Urbanowicz works mainly as an illustrator and likes to draw people eating delicious food. great world-broadening narrative to use in instructing scientific method to children

I used this book in a classroom setting to help illustrate the scientific method to primary-grade children. (Using an illustrated picture book to illustrate a concept--how appropriate!) Anyway, the kids really enjoyed the evocative imagery and world-expanding narrative on the invention of "magic" instant ramen. It was an effective story for a lively read aloud, as well as for making a cross-curricular connection to science curriculum. And, yes, for students in the rural American Midwest, I then treated them to their very first Cup Noodles!

Peace will come to a world when all its people have enough to eat, Momofuku Ando

This is an unusual picture book which tells the story of the inventor of Nissin noodles, Momofuku Ando and is very accessible to its target audience, ages 4-8. However, it also doubles as a mentor text on the subject of food poverty for older middle school readers looking for an accessible text on the inventor of one of the world's most convenient foods, Momofuku Ando. Carefully nuanced pictures of impoverished Japanese post WW2 in line for noodle soup create "the emotional centre" of the book (Wang) and illustrate what inspired this inventor of noodles to pursue is dream of making nutritious food available to all.

Nice illustrations and story but…

I bought this book for my child who loves ramen. I like the illustrations and the story is nice but Unfortunately I didn’t keep it. Because my child is a sensitive kid and the story was sorrowful at times. It’s a good informative story picture book about how ramen was made for the purpose of feeding people cheap and easily but it is not for us.

Delicious

In the aftermath of World War II, Osaka remains devastated. Food is scarce with bad harvests and rationing. The luckiest people stand in long lines for bowls of ramen. When Ando sees this, he realizes that something must be done to help people. He decides to dedicate his life to food, first opening a salt business and eventually following his memories of those hungry people to figure out how to make instant ramen. It was a long process of invention, trial and error. Once he created the perfect noodles, he moved on to trying to figure out how to create the broth too. He tried many things and continued to fail until he saw his wife frying tempura and was inspired to fry his noodles first. Eureka!

This nonfiction picture book offers a frank and fascinating look at the process of the invention of instant ramen. From the original inspiration through all of the mistakes and trials to the final result. The book has a great pacing, lingering over the more touching moments of inspiration, zooming through years where Ando had other priorities, and then slowing once again to explore the experimental process of invention.

The illustrations are completely appealing and often have a broad sense of humor included. They have a sense of motion and cinematic approach, particularly while Ando is inventing the ramen. Using panels, the ideas flow quickly and fail just as fast. The result is a cleverly designed book that inspires.

Just as satisfying as a warm bowl of ramen, this is a delicious read. Appropriate for ages 5-8.

Awesome (and yummy!) picture book biography about the origin of ramen noodles.

Who doesn’t love ramen noodles?! Yum! And yet few of us know about the origin of those ubiquitous noodles that we find in cups and bowls and on grocery shelves. I guarantee that once you learn about their origin that you’ll want to eat them even more. Momofuku Ando wanted to do something about the hunger he saw in post-war Japan; he was shocked by the long food lines and the suffering of his people. So he embarked upon a mission to create a quick, convenient (easy to prepare) and TASTY noodle dish. “Peace follows from a full stomach,” he believed. . . after much experimentation and failure, he finally came up with the recipe for the noodles we know and love today. Anime-style illustrations make this book appealing to kids and adults alike. An overall winner to enjoy reading again and again. Warning: this book will make you hungry!
